Feb 18, 2012 - Minibus to Than Hoa, Vietnam

LONG travel day. We just made our bust this morning, hiking to the bus station and getting there at 7:45 for a bus scheduled for an 8am departure. Thus far, everything has left late-- we though we had plenty of time. But the bus was on its way at 7:50! I should say we were on the road, not that we were on our way... we wound through Sam Neua for about an hour picking up people and goods (including some cages of birds!) before finally heading out of town and towards the Vietnam border. We crossed into Vietnam at just past noon, no...

Jun 13, 2006 - Ninh Binh- 'The Moped Diaries'

The town of Ninh Binh is about 70km south of Hanoi- so a short train journey. Good job really as the seats on Vietnamese trains aren't that comfy- like park benches. Although we couldn't complain. For 90p we got a train journey and a hot lunch! 15 minutes after getting off the train we were in a guesthouse and had sorted out our 2 days there. There's not a huge amount to do in Ninh Binh itself but has loads to see nearby. We went for the option of renting our guesthouse owners moped and driving ourselves around. It seemed like a good option...

Dec 31, 2005 - To Thanh Hoa

31 December - To Thanh Hoa When we surfaced, about 0830, and walked into town we felt like exhibits a and b. There were more people in town than yesterda and all seemed to be staring at and discussing us. We went to a different place for breakfast - Claudio had noodle soup with meat, and I had nothing. The place seemed pretty dirty, but was very busy. We sat in a back room where a table of young men, and a couple of police officers, were already drinking rice whisky. When one of the drunker men of the group sat rather too closely to me,...

Dec 18, 2005 - Whale Island - ahhh!

Hello again folks! Merry Christmas! Yes, we are still alive despite the long intervals between updates. Once you see these pictures, you'll know what's been occupying our time! We arrived by boat to Whale Island, Vietnam - our haven for 3 days. The views were fantastic and the water crystal clear. We discover upon arrival however, that our camera lens had broken. We're not sure how it happened, but devastated at the prospect of not being able to take photos of this wonderful place. Long story short, we were able to get the glass cover...

Aug 26, 2005 - NINH BINH

Mar 3, 2005 - 2nd day of riding

Today we rode 44 miles, stopped at two beautiful pagodas. Part of the ride was on Highway 1, which is the main road from north to south, a two lane VERY busy road, a little on the scary side, considering thew way people drive here. We stopped at a preschool in one of the villages and played with the kids for a little bit. They sang a couple of songs for us, and we sang a couple of songs for them (Scary, I know...). They were soooooo adorale! It's really amazing how happy they are, living with so little. People here walk their cows and...
