Feb 6, 2011 - Isla Margarita & Porlamar

Went back to the restaurant w/ American Special breakfast down from hotel. Fredi, hotel manager, arranged to have lady come by and exchg US $$ 8:1. She came just when we were planning to go get the ferry, oh well! We went ahead w/ $200 US each. As it is turning out if we used the official (thru ATMs/banks) rate travel here would be on par with Brazil, but the black market exchg puts it at an affordable, Bolivian cost level! Just missed the noon ferry however, so had to wait for the 2pm slow ferry...cheaper mainly due to our advanced age,...

Dec 2, 2007 - Isla Margarita, Venezuela

From Ciudad Bolivar I was headed to Isla Margarita in the Venezuelan Caribbean. Never did I guess for such a hassle, long lines and a lot of waiting to get on a boat, from Puertl La Cruz where I took the ferry to Porlamar on Isla Margarita. When I finally got onto the ferry, I was faced by an incredibly sight - for me at least! The ferry didn't look like any other ferry I had been on. It's ENORMOUS and it looks like a First Class cruising ship! Or at least that's how I had imagined them to be like! Very fancy-pancy seats, a bar, TV... loads...

Sep 16, 2007 - Venezuela - Isla de Margarita - Pearl of the Caribbean

Okay, so another hurricane was headed our way (this time in the form of one of Jeffrey's other girlfriends!) so the time had come for me to leave the boat. Actually, it was pretty darned hard leaving the boat and Caribbean behind. After all, there are worse things to do than live on a sailboat, and worse places to be doing it! But considering that I was only supposed to be on the boat for a few weeks and I stayed almost 4 months - and considering that during that time I got to do a bit of sailing, live in paradise, spend some quality time...

Apr 24, 2007 - Isla Margarita

So this is where things get really interesting for me. I'd arrived in Venezuela's so called Caibbean paradise and checked myself into a hostel run by some quirky and aloof Germans. They gave me the usual spiel about where to and not to go at night and I got some tips from them about taxi prices and good bars and that sort of thing. I knew there was a new Hard Rock Cafe on the island too, so I got some directions for that too. So off I went in a taxi to one of the islands largest shopping malls, Centro Sambil in Porlamar. This place is...

Jun 21, 2004 - Isla Margerita - Venezuala`s Carribean Gem

Oh yeah, now this is more like it! After arriving on Isla Margarita late afternoon/early evening and check into our hotels and meet up to have dinner and check out the bars. We´re staying in Playa El Agua, apparently the cool place to stay on this island and on first impressions it is! We have dinner in a lovely resturant on the beach front listening to the carribean sea lapping on the shores on the beach and then head onto a bar where we get staight into the Cubra Libra´s (rum and cokes) and get into the swing of things. Katie and I are...
