Oct 30, 2011 - A slow bus to Montevideo

After sleeping in, courtesy of Valium and a cold and flu tablet, I emerged from our room in Colonia for breakfast at about 0830. Breakfast was typical apart from some of the sweet spreads. These included squares of quince paste that were not overly sweet, and a sweet brown paste ubiquitous in South American cooking called 'dulce du leche'. It is made by boiling down milk and sugar. It is often used as a filling in cakes. The Posada was able to reserve us seats on the 1045 bus to Montevideo and a taxi to take us to the Bus Station, so it was...

Mar 22, 2011 - Adios Uruguay

We enjoyed the cultural offerings in Montevideo. I went to Teatro Solis, their national opera house built in the classic European style to watch, of all things, the digital broadcast of Lucia di Lammermoor from the Met in New York City. The theater is a gorgeous venue and soprano Natalie Dessay was fabulous as Lucia. The next night we saw 'Una Mujer Justa' de Sandor Marai! The Mexican film Biutiful was too tragic for us, but Allen practiced Spanish in the absence of subtitles :). To complete the round of the arts, we stepped into the...

Mar 19, 2011 - Montevideo, Uruguay

Montevideo is the third national capital we've visited on this journey; Buenas Aires and Santiago being the first two. Montevideo is similar to BA. The cultures of Argentina and Uruguay are closer in personality than either is to Chile; the former two are more Italian, while Chile has a more German & English influence. Uruguay has by far the most pronounced 'Matte flavor'. Far more so than in either of the other two countries do you see people walking the streets, riding the buses, sitting on park benches holding / drinking from their matte...

Jan 30, 2011 - Montevideo

Sunday, January 30, 2011 Four Points Sheraton was a very classy hotel: rooms were spacious and comfortable, well-placed toiletries, a bright bathroom, and very nice breakfast. They offered free ½ hour Internet service on their business computers, not your own. Using your own computer would be charged by the hour. Time was limited; therefore it didn’t pay to buy time, just quickly check my e-mail on the free service. We were definitely away from the equator! A cool 70° with low humidity and a nice breeze had some wearing light sweaters....

Jan 27, 2011 - Montevideo

Bus leaves at 8:30am...on the dot! Almost left Mari behind (Bon told driver to wait & she went to get her)...We'd been waiting for bus to arr for half an hour but just when it arr and was loading luggage Mari went to the bano, very typical of her I'm afraid tho she says not so, oh well, she didn't t get left and alls well! The further we go in Uruguay the more obvious to me their propensity for orderliness, neatness i.e. maintanence. Not that there is no litter, but overall I seen no heaps of rubbish/ piles of trash accumulating as I...

Oct 24, 2010 - Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay - pretty little town an hour's ferry ride away from BA, and another stamp in the passport. Easy walk from the port to the old part of town, though took us a while to actually realise we'd reached it! v picturesque, lots of little old buildings and churches and squares. We were ravenous, so sat down at a place with a sunny garden and live music, where we had 'chivito' a sort of beef covered in melted cheese and an egg sorta thing, the typical local snack apparently! Alright, but it was no BA lomo! After a bit...

Jun 8, 2010 - strolling around

May 6, 2010 - Montevideo - May 3-6

May 3, 2010 Thankfully today wasn’t one of those stupid early flight days and we got up at a normal hour, had breakfast, packed up and checked out before getting a taxi to the airport. We had just a 90 minute flight to Aeroparque, the mostly national airport in Buenos Aires and then another of those enjoyable long waits. This one was only about 7 hours so would be a breeze compared to those we’ve had recently and some we have coming up at the end of this week, too! Montevideo is our last destination in South America (for now!) and we have...

May 1, 2010 - Montevideo, Uruguay

HOLA After leaving Salto (very relaxing which was needed) we finally arrived in the city Montevideo after another 6 hour private bus drive- which is great as it seems that the only time we get to sleep is on the buses! The City is about 400 years old - beautiful old buildings and churches. City is divided into two sides the old and the new - it is pretty cool to see. As we arrive in each destination Sabe gives us our City Tour and stories along the way. We walked for almost 6 hours - the city is also along a ocean boardwalk - it was...

Mar 28, 2010 - South America Nine - NCL Cruise

BLOG NINE SATURDAY 13/03/10 Wake up call at 6:30am and Jose was slightly worse for wear from the previous evening. Oh well these things happen and it was helped by a good brekkie and coffee and wasn’t too bad a hangover. Our bags were packed and we were off the Ocean Nova by 8:00am and on the way to the airport for our midday flight to Buenos Aires. Wifi was great at the airport although no power outlet so we relied on battery power for the laptop and managed to get emails done and one blog sent out. Last farewells to our ship mates at...
