Punta Del Este : Uruguay What was once an old fishing village has now become one of South America's most fashionable resort towns, catering to wealthy Argentines. It was quite busy and pretty although it's highly praised beach areas don't compare to those on the Sunshine Coast...we are certainly spoilt in many ways. Jan 13, 2007 - La Paloma, Uruguay

Our gamble of booking a hotel in La Paloma through a tourist office in the bus station in Montevideo worked out brilliantly. We had asked for "a budget alternative to Punta del Este" and that's just what we got! Our 2* 'Hotel la Tuna' looked exactly as it did in the photos, i.e. not very pretty but clean, cheap and perfectly adequate! The location just couldn't have been better - the beach was literally a few steps from the hotel and waking up every morning to the sound of the waves made a welcome break from the usual street noise and...
