Jun 21, 2016 - Good-bye Wisconsin

Tonight is the full moon but I got a great shot of the moon over Lake Superior last night at our campsite in Washburn, Wisconsin. Today we got ready to move on. I took a picture of a unique aspect of the campground. There is an artesian well on the grounds where you can fill jugs of water. I filled one water bottle and enjoyed the great flavor of the pure water. At about 9:15 a.m. we pulled away from the campground and continued on our trip along the south shore of Lake Superior. The weather is perfect, clear air, high temperature of 72...

Jun 20, 2016 - Enjoying a Day of Relaxation

Some times our timing is off. We are in this area to see the Apostle Islands but it's been so windy that we have not dared to go out on the sightseeing boat ride that is 3 1/2 hours long. And so we have enjoyed a nice relaxing day starting with a visit to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. It's more a museum than a visitor's center. We saw a couple of movies including one about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald during hurricane force winds on Lake Superior. Since I love history a museum experience like this puts me in the mood to...

Jun 19, 2016 - Near the Apostle Islands

A few years ago my brother, Brian, told me about the Apostle Islands and how beautiful the area is. I had to take out a map to find them in the uppermost part of Wisconsin in Lake Superior. We are in Washburn, Wisconsin, about 75 miles from Duluth. We are camped just a few miles from Bayfield where the boat tours that take you to see the islands leave from. The day was very warm for this area, upper 80s, but a cold front with a strong thunderstorm is coming through tonight that will cool the temperatures down into the 70s. (Just heard...

May 17, 2015 - Lighthouses in Minnesota & Wisconsin

Sorry I have been so late posting a blog. I just know that you are waiting with baited breath for some lighthouse pictures and information. We arrived in Two Harbors, MN on May 13 and we saw a total of 6 lighthouses from Duluth to the south and Grand Marais to the north. We were following what is referred to as the North Shore. It is a pretty area and very popular with outdoor enthusiasts. On our first day we drove to Duluth and saw 3 lights clustered rather close together. One was the Harbor North Breakwater, Harbor South Inner Breakwater...

Jul 13, 2012 - Washburn, WI

The city of Washburn nestles on the shore of Lake Superior's historic Chequamegon Bay in northernmost Wisconsin. There are two campgrounds in town which are first come first serve. Since it was Friday afternoon we were a little panicked that we may not find a spot and did not want to spend the day searching for a campground. We managed to get one of the few remaining spots in Thompson's West End City Park. It's a nice campground with great views of Lake Superior. We plan to stay two nights and travel around the area during the day.

Sep 19, 2007 - Arrived in Washburn, Wisconsin

After a couple of restful days hanging out in and around Grand Marais, MN, we made a short 180 mile drive to Washburn, Wisconsin. We have set up camp at the Thompson's West End Campground which is located right on the shore of Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay. We have yet to explore the town, but the last census recorded about 2200 residents. Washburn is located near the northern tip of Wisconsin on the west shoreline of a large Lake Superior bay. On our way down here from Grand Marais we passed through mostly forested lands with some fields...
