Sep 2, 2014 - Stevens Point, WI - Rivers Edge Campground

Our trip from Arbor Vitae to Stevens Point, WI was a pleasant 101 mile drive on mostly good, four-lane road that turned into Interstate 39 in Wausau. We are staying at the Rivers Edge Campground a little north of Stevens Point, WI. It is a very large campground where we had tried to spend Labor Day but they initially didn't have a spot for us. You sit here now and are amazed that all of these campsites were full of people and you can see a hundred empty sites now. We have a 50 amp pull-through with water and a dump on the way out. Since we...

Dec 23, 2011 - Fall Down - Go Boom

As has been the case the last few years, we enjoyed an early Christmas with Molly, Eric and Layla the Wednesday / Thursday before the big holiday. We had a very nice time, Layla received far too many presents (crazy grandparents!), and since Eric had to work Friday, the crew returned to Oshkosh later Thursday afternoon. Never being ones to procrastinate (at least as it relates to heading south), we were able to remove all the tree trimmings before calling it a night. I think we had the tree up for all of 23 days this year - a bit of a waste...

Murph & Jill 2012

Apr 11, 2011 - Gee But Its Great To Be Back Home

We were up early Sunday and (wonder of wonders) both the jacks and the slides retracted as they were supposed to. Our fridge was still dead (and it still is actually), but we had plenty of ice, so out we rolled at 7:00, heading for Muskogee, Joplin and points north. It was a decent enough day for a drive, though the wind gusts continued to make life interesting. At about noon we stopped at the Joplin Flying J for gas and went next door to the Blue Beacon truck wash. While I had washed the sides of the motor home somewhat in Los Ayala, the...

Dec 22, 2010 - Christmas - Better Early Than Never

I know most of you have been sitting by your computers thinking, “I wonder if that dopey Norton will go to Mexico this year, and better yet, will he write about it?” Have no fear my friends, I have not gotten one bit brighter over the years (just ask Jill), nor have I lost my interest in documenting all the foolishness that often goes with these travels. No Norton Mexico trip would be complete without celebrating a little Christmas with the family beforehand. This year we convinced Molly, Eric & Layla that the holiday was actually December...

Oct 16, 2010 - True entertainment!

We started the day with a visit to downtown Sturgeon Bay. It seemed a pity to leave the are without ever seeing the town so we went exploring. We wandered through the downtown, chatting with a couple of store owners and learning about "fiber arts". It is amazing what talented people can do with yarns and wool. It was a moving day again. Our goal was to get from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin to Steven's Point, Wisconsin. Although we are fond of secondary roads, we didn't expect to see quite as many as we did. We ran into several detours. One of...

Dec 24, 2007 - Be Prepared

While our winter trip to Mexico didn't officially begin until Christmas Day, the days leading up to our departure were plenty busy. Over the weekend we had Molly & Eric as visitors for an early Christmas. While they brought plenty of nice presents and their delightful personalities, they also brought the better part of 12" of snow Saturday night and Sunday morning. Molly & Eric took off for Appleton (and Eric's parents) on Sunday morning while I blew snow once on Saturday and twice on Sunday. It's a good thing we got out of town when we...

On The Road Again

Aug 15, 2007 - Stevens Point, Wisconsin

After leaving Michigan's UP, we drove to Stevens Point, in the very heart of Wisconsin. Why, you may ask yourself? Well, because despite having been raised in St. Louis, home of Anheuser-Busch, I (Alexis) have never been on a brewery tour. And the Point Brewery, located in downtown Stevens Point, makes one of Kevin's favorite beers. Since we didn't have anything else to do, why not take a $2 per person brewery tour? It was actually very interesting. However, I'm still not a beer drinker, possibly even less so after seeing what the stuff...

Jul 22, 2007 - Wisconsin and Air Racing

Last Saturday we accompanied Lowell's brother to the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament in Silvas, IL. It was the first men's PGA tournament for us, but her brother was a veteran of the John Deere. This meant he knew where all the John Deere Equipment was located, plus where all the ice cream and food stands were situated. Even better, his son worked there for the week and was able to get us free tickets to the event. Life is good, eh? After the tournament we went to her brothers for dinner. You see, I did score another free meal. After...

Jul 28, 2005 - Decisions, decisions

Another rainy, cool morning. Driving out of Copper Beach, Highway 41 is almost a tunnel, the trees growing over the roadway. Very pretty. The temperature is 59 degrees. All morning, it rains off and on, sometimes hard. It would be nice to stop at a cozy roadside place, but nothing that I see appeals. Then there are decisions to be made and sometimes I don't make them until the last minute. While in Copper Beach, I had the optimum chance to go to Isle Royale National Park, an island in Lake Superior, eventually deciding against the day boat...
