Jun 27, 2018 - Back on the road, new tires

June26 - carefully drove (50 mph) 33 miles into Marquette for tire replacements. From 10:30 to 5:00. Another 32 miles to Van Riper state park, on Lake Michigamme, settled down after dinner at 8:30, a very exasperated, very trying day; looking forward to sleep. No swarms of bloodsuckers tonight. Last night, so many mosquitos got into trailer, we were slapping walls and ceilings. Blood everywhere. The sunset pic was taken Brimley park at 10:00 pm; the tire pic at 4:55pm June 26. June 27 - 230 miles, 2:00 central time, nice site. New tires tow...

May 10, 2016 - Driving through Minnesota and Wisconsin

From Northland Camping and RV Park South Range, WI It wasn't raining when we got up but we were in light rain most of the day. We left the plains and the wind and are in trees, evergreens and lakes. A lot of lakes. We stopped at a beautiful park for lunch on one of the lakes, but it was drizzling so we ate inside the coach. Wish we could meander a little but we'll just have to come back during warmer weather. Tomorrow we enter Michigan so until we meet again...

Aug 11, 2014 - Bessemer and South Range

We left Rapid River on Friday, easy, really nice trip to our campground in Bessemer, Michigan. The campground we were planning to go to next, in Minnesota, couldn't take us until the 12th, so we had to spend a few nights along the way. Chose this spot as I saw that it was close to several waterfalls. Originally we were planning to stay three days, but weather encouraged us to leave after two. We did get our waterfall trip in and they were beautiful. At the end of that trip, we had a picnic on the shores of Lake Superior. On our way back to...

Aug 11, 2014 - South Range, WI - Northland Campground and RV

Our trip from Ashland to South Range, Wi was a short 58 miles, though it seemed a little longer with the terrible roads involved. It was the usual asphalt over concrete with very uneven joints that just drives you crazy in one of these things. There wasn't a whole lot to take pictures of but we did include a few. There was this one couple in a Porsche Carrera that just poked along in front us and I dont think he ever noticed this huge monster right on his tail. Through towns he would slow to 25 in a 45 zone and then speed back up to around...

Aug 3, 2012 - Hwy 61 to two harbors

Today is cloudy in the AM, but it's the day to drive the north shore. The sky cleared as we approach Two Harbors and it was a very nice day. We visited the first office of 3 M and learned it started with a false belief in a rock found here., to be used as an abrasive. They developed a sandpaper that is waterproof, used by Henry Ford, and that was their big start. Of course it has grown through innovation. Then we toured the Edna G tugboat, built in 1896, always coal powered steam driven. It worked the harbor intil 1981. The interior cabin...

Aug 2, 2012 - Cirrus factory tour

Yesterday it rained in the am and we took the day off to relax. Today we took a guided tour of the cirrus factory, located at the international airport in Duluth. They normally give tours on Wednesdays, however added this tour due to demand. The tour guide works in the warehouse area and is not a pilot, the other people on the tour weren't pilots either. They limit groups to 10 people and it lasted about 1 1/2 hours and was comprehensive. Before the tour a plane came in after a test ride, the air national guard is on the airport and 8 jets...

Jul 31, 2012 - Apostle islands

Today we took the glass bottom boat tour of several of the apostle islands off wisconsin's north shore. We took a scenic drive through Ashland and along hwy 13 to bayfield. This is an old fishing town and we had fresh whitefish and smoked trout for lunch. The lake is cloudy near shore due to silt from the heavy rains they have experienced. The tour went by several wrecks and over one. These ships burned because of coal engines used in the early 1900's. We went by several of the islands and learned history - each island is different and all...

Jul 30, 2012 - Duluth and n shore railroad tour

We drove to Duluth today. The bridge from superior to duluth is closed on the northbound side as repairs are made to prevent the type of failure that occurred in Minneapolis several years ago. The harbor is very active with ships going and coming. One attraction is the aerial lift bridge with a walkway across and lighthouses on piers on each side. We drove to the sky harbor airport that has a seaplane base at the end of Minnesota point. Wisconsin point is just across the harbor. We then took the north shore scenic railroad from the depot to...

South Range, WI. 49 deg clear, no wind Forecast = Clear in the morning, then partly cloudy. High of 77F. Winds from the South at 5 to 15 mph shifting to the ENE in the afternoon. Jul 17, 2009 - Up North

When we arrived at our campground in Wisconsin it was a first for us… We usually always stay on the Minnesota side but unfortunately, Duluth is really lacking in their camping facilities so we decided to go across the lake a couple of miles to South Range, Wi. It is not that far from the Minnesota border and we found a spot that has some nice full hook up camping sites while still close to what we want to do…. We didn’t do too much the day we arrived except get set up for our stay but the next day was a real busy one….. It was a beautiful...

Jul 10, 2009 - South Range, Wisconsin

Here we are again…. I’m getting better since it has only been a couple of days. We have had a busy time catching up on domestic duties that I neglected while Ken and Sandy were with us.,, That is what is the best about full timing….. If you don’t do it today, there is tomorrow or a few tomorrow’s later. Yesterday we drove over to the area that our kids live because they were having a county fair. My Daughter Coleen is very artistic and had a booth with her friend at the fair selling her crafts…. We went to visit her booth only to find out...
