Mar 23, 2020 - Big Rivers - Oshkosh B'Gosh!

Monday March 23 was our “home stretch” day, so we were up and raring to go by 5:00. This far west in the Central time zone meant it was darn dark - and stayed that way for quite awhile. The Comfort Suites may not have had breakfast but they did have a fully functional ice machine - we still had to keep Jill’s meds (and my Pacifico) properly refrigerated for this grand finale. In another piece of good news, the final pair of Jill’s sugar rolls were still growth free, so into the microwave (and then into me) they went. Mmmmm-good! The Iowa...

Dec 14, 2019 - Where Did All this Stuff Come From?

Once we had all the hassle with the CR-V and hologram behind us, Jill and I could concentrate on our two most important remaining responsibilities: packing up all our stuff and our upcoming family Christmas. The 2019-2020 version is our 15th driving trip to and from Mexico since I retired (16th if you count the 3 week back and forth in early 2008 when Jill’s mom had a heart attack). When we had the motor home with all its storage space, we didn’t worry too much about the crap we were hauling for that 6500 miles roundtrip. Since we have...

Jul 28, 2019 - Nussbaum lunch and L279

Today we had the traditional lunch with Joel as he is here for 2 days. Margie and Alice and Miller came too - a smaller gathering than in past years but it worked as we stayed inside due to the heat. Joel drove up this year and that is an opportunity to send stuff back now. So I made up a bag for each guy with that special underwear and a can of the 50th anniversary beer. Also a bag for Margie and Robin with items found at thrift stores and Oshkosh. We had a good time. That evening we went to dinner at Perkins with Alice and Miller and some...

Jul 23, 2019 - Poberezny home tour

Margie and I went on the tour of the Poberezny home. It was interesting. The original farm house is over 100 years old and was added onto extensively. The front of the house obscures the original structure. We were not taken into the home itself as it’s now owned by the Irwin family (Aircraft Spruce) and they are occupying it during Oshkosh. We did tour the garage with an office above it that included both a desk and a bar. Then we were taken to the basement of the house that includes another desk and bar as well as area for guests to be...

Jul 21, 2019 - More mud

It rained and there was wind too - a tornado in Appleton but thankfully the rough weather went through Wisconsin north of us. Several people lost their canopies - including Miller. The campground is soft and a 45’ Anthem got stuck right in front of us, would have kept us from driving the car out but we weren’t going anywhere in the mud anyway. Finally the tractor came to pull him backwards all the way to Schaik and later we found he did get to his spot. The next morning I found out the campground is closed, people are parked in the shopping...

Jul 18, 2019 - Stuck in the mud

It rained last night and all this morning, the campground is wet and muddy. There are mud holes at the end of the lane at each street - a good one in front of us in the drive too. The tires on the Honda have mud all over. But we are in a fairly good spot as the line that marks the end of the sites is pretty dry. We saw an RV being pulled by a tractor and then the Dutch Star that was coming into the spot in back of the fifth wheel next to us got stuck and a big tractor came to pull him loose. Glad we came here on a day that was dry and that...

Jul 13, 2019 - Oshkosh

We are in site L259, W&E at Oshkosh. The drive up was good, no back ups in Chicago. We were allowed to drive around and pick an available spot. Just as we got into the campground we met Cindy and Scott Nall who we were parked next to in Perry! They are looking for a site as well and will come in later as they have a place elsewhere in Wisconsin reserved for a week. Scott helped Ray get parked in our site - it’s about 25 x 50 so we are making maximum use of the width. The field is pretty empty but they are starting to get more sites sold as...

Apr 9, 2019 - This Was Supposed To Be Easier

As I compose this final chapter of my trip journal for 2018-2019, we are already safely back in south Texas. With luck we’ll be back in Oshkosh by the end of the day on Saturday the 7th. With that said, I thought I’d ruminate on a few things that did and didn’t happen in Mexico and elsewhere this year. Family - Molly, Eric, Layla and Gus were able to visit us for a week from March 22 - March 29, our last full week in Los Ayala. We had a very good time and the weather was superb (as it essentially was for us all 3 1/2 months we were there....

Mexico 2018-2019

Dec 8, 2018 - Start On The Right Foot

Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9 With the elder Nortons heading to Mexico well ahead of the holidays, once again we opted for an early family Christmas, this time on Saturday, December 8. We had actually considered staying around an extra week, but were rather firmly told by our daughters that “tradition” dictated that our celebration coincide with the Army-Navy football game (Brian being a West Point grad and Army’s #1 cheerleader). Nothing like being forced by your daughters to get the heck outta Dodge, huh? Is there a subtle...

Mexico 2018-2019

Dec 10, 2017 - Getting Started

We had our family Christmas Saturday the 9th and had a great time with the whole crew. After all the presents, brandy old fashions, and far, far too much food, they all took off by around 6:00 and we were back on our own. Before we hit the sack at 9:15, we had the Christmas tree completely stripped and several rooms of Jill’s decorations safely back in their tubs. First thing on Sunday the bare tree was out the door. In a fun development, our Neenah friends (and former Stevens Point teachers) Jim and Shirley Willis, “recycled” our barely 2...

Jul 24, 2017 - Oshkosh

We arrived yesterday, are at butternut and 25th, parked north to south this year, as a change. The field is soft but ok and we are using airbags for leveling. There are long coaches each side of us, one couple just bought their allegro bus and this is their first trip to Oshkosh. Should be great weather, somewhat cool. The drive from Gladstone was pretty, all along Green Bay. We had a great time, weather was comfortable, rained only once and the field dried up right away. We met Steve and Vickie hall with the allegro bus and enjoyed their...

Oct 19, 2016 - Oshkosh B'gosh

Oshkosh, WI Although most could traverse the 131 miles between Sister Bay and Oshkosh in 2 hours, we required 7 to complete the task. We made a few stops and took a few side trips. Cave Cove County Park overlooks the waters of Lake Michigan. The wind and waves from the lake have worn away limestone cliffs to create underwater caves. On stormy days, the sound of waves crashing into the cliffs is thunderous, and the spray can shoot up to 20’ in the air. We admired the coastline and then turned our attention to some trails. It had been some...
