Aug 27, 2020 - Kieler WI

We headed out of Des Moines just a little after 10:00 Monday morning and headed east on I-80 and then zig-zagged northeast past Cedar Rapids till we crossed eastbound over the Mississippi River – for the first time in over 16 months – and landed in Kieler, Wisconsin so we could play tourist around Dubuque, Iowa for a couple days. The trip was good, but the scenery was not. Back on August 10th the Midwest was struck by a derecho, a line of strong thunderstorms with devastating winds...

Aug 13, 2020 - Truck Country

We are at a Freightliner repair place in Dubuque. As we drove to kieler the tag axle warning light came on and would not go off. We were afraid it would not do that again so I it could be diagnosed, but when we got to truck Country it did stay on. We were there at 8, hoping it could be fixed and we would be on our way. After about an hour they started to look at it in the parking lot, sent out a mechanic who had never seen an RV before. Then changed us out to their top tech who pulled us into the bay and let us stay in the Eagle with the...

Aug 12, 2020 - Ulysses S. Grant Home and Fenelon Elevator

Yesterday we went to the Freightliner place to check it all out. The hookups for electric are 110 and 220. Not what we thought they would be. They will take us Thursday and hopefully we will get them to hook up to electric in the bay so Birti and Manny can have some air. We drove around Dubuque and got the truck washed. So many hills and cliffs in town, looks interesting for another year when we have time. I also drove to Platteville and the drive there is scenic as well - many rolling hills and cliffs. The sky is clear blue - was really...

Aug 10, 2020 - Rustic Barn Campground

What a day. First the check tag light came on as we were ready to leave Leisure Lake but went off as Ray ran the engine. The routing from Rand McNally took us on back roads off the interstate that were good until we were in Wisconsin. We stopped for lunch and fuel at a Petro that had a Nussbaum truck parked there - we’ve seen them on the road but I was able to take a photo for Joel. Then the sky turned black and a tornado warning came on the phone as we drove out of Rockford, IL. There was some hail, torrential rain and the GPS put us on a...

Aug 30, 2014 - Driving Across Iowa

"Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa." Today we drove from No. Sioux City, South Dakota across the state of Iowa. It was a beautiful drive. We both thought that Iowa was totally flat, but actually it is quite hilly on the eastern and western sides while the middle is just gentle slopes. We did run into every type of weather (except hail and snow)including fog. We did see lots of corn fields which we did expect. We chose to stay on the outskirts of Dubuque, Iowa. We choose a nice little RV park here in Kieler, Wisconsin. It is beautiful. Denis...

Jun 21, 2013 - Elkhart, IN to Kieler, WI

Poor Dave, he woke up with a sore throat this morning. So he's gargling with salt water and sucking on throat lozenges. Today was the first of 3 days that would just be drive and layover, drive and layover, drive and layover. The sunny skies we had when we left quickly changed to dark skies with billowy clouds full of lightening, thunder and buckets of rain. Add to that lots of construction and you can see why we were both ready for a cocktail when we got to our destination, Rustic Barn Campground! We always calculate our gas mileage...

Oct 10, 2012 - South to Kieler

It would have been nice to stay another day in La Crosse; but, the weather dissuaded us from staying on. The winds were blowing so hard all we needed was a broom to fly around on and we could have had an early Halloween. So, we decided to take a hint from the birds and get along south. We hooked up and hit the road. I was able to get a quick shot of the largest six-pack at a brewery south of La Crosse. One of the challenges with driving the Great River Road is deciding which side of the river to choose; we decided to stay on the Wisconsin...

Sep 22, 2011 - Traveling the Great River Road

After a restful night of sleep at the casino we headed south yesterday morning ready to see, once again, where the road would take us. Although gray and cold we have thoroughly enjoyed our travels of both yesterday and today. Yesterday we drove through Red Wing, Minnesota (home of Red Wing Shoes and work boots), Lake City, Wabasha, and Winona. During our day we viewed various lock and dam stations and marveled at the engineering it took to design such an efficient system as is found on the Mississippi River. Wouldn’t it be fun to start at...

Sep 16, 2011 - Another Travel Day - Back into Wisconsin

Today was another travel day. We traveled down the Great River Road on the Minnesota side into Iowa and passed into Wisconsin at Prairie du Chen. It was cold and overcast; a sweatshirt kind of day. The scenery was mostly farm country with corn fields once we crossed into Iowa. -- We will be staying the weekend at the Rustic Barn Campground in Kieler, Wisconsin, across the Mississippi River from Dubuque, Iowa. We do not have cable or WiFi at our site, but there is WiFi at the office. We do have a marvelous view of a farm next to us. -- A...

Jun 23, 2011 - First Time State For Us Both......Wisconsin

From Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park – Kieler, WI Slept in later than usual on a moving day but we only had 125 miles to go and decided that we did not have to wake up with the chickens to move this short distance. We left Geneseo at 10:45 with the drive beginning in a misty rain but thank goodness it never developed into anything more severe and at times there was no “moisture” falling at all. The drive took us about 3 ½ hours but we stopped twice along the way. Once at a Wal-Mart looking for some items we have not been able to find and...

Apr 18, 2010 - Moved to Wisconsin

Sunday, April 18, 2010 Rustic Barn, Kieler, WI Indian Lakes to Ottawa to Rustic Barn We pulled out of Indian Lakes Thousand Trails this morning at 8:00 AM. It was kind of bitter sweet because we knew it would be a while before we would be back and we knew this would be the last campground we would pull out of as part of our dream. We were starting a new chapter today. We drove past Steve and Sheila's place, blew the horn as they were getting ready to go to church then drove on down the road. We drove on around Indianapolis then got on I-74...

Jul 20, 2008 - Across Iowa to The Field of Dreams

Sunday, July 20, 2008. Rustic Barn Campground, Kieler, WI Across Iowa to The Field of Dreams We got up this morning in Sioux Falls and the fog was too thick to drive so we decided to go have breakfast at the restaurant in the truck stop. We watched the weather but the fog was burning off slowly so there wasn't any hurry. That was nice. We got on the road around 8:00 and drove until we arrived in Dyersville where The Field of Dreams is located. We walked around and checked things out. Everything looked just like it did in the movie (which...
