Feb 22, 2014 - Birkie Race Day

The 41st Birkebeiner is over and in the history books. Jim, Kevin and Mari skied the 54 kilometer Birkebeiner and I skied the 23 kilometer Korteloppett. We got up this morning and systematically dressed for temperatures between 5 and 11 degrees and windy. We even smeared goop on our faces to protect against frostbite. Jim, Kevin and Mari left early as they were in waves 5 & 6. Dave drove me down to the starting area a little later for wave 8. I didn't have to wait around in the cold. As I got out of the car they were calling wave 8 to the...

Feb 21, 2014 - Day 6

The day before the race is for resting, waxing ski's and arranging all of your clothing and equipment. I feel like dressing is going to be complicated tomorrow. It is going to be very cold tomorrow and you want to dress warm enough but you don't want to sweat or restrict your movement. I've got hand & foot warmers and I will be putting some stuff on my face to protect my skin from the cold. We had a big spaghetti dinner, traditional pre-race carbo-loading I tried Benadryl today and that has helped the most with my congestion, but it is...

Feb 20, 2014 - Day 5

It's snowing like crazy here now. The ski wax experts have no idea what to recommend. Conditions will be changing several times and depending on how they handle the grooming who knows what the final result will be. Thursday and Friday are rest days so no skiing. At 10:30 this morning there was a knock on the door, it was Mari from Reno NV. We were expecting her a little later, but the person she was riding with from Green Bay decided to wait till Friday to drive up because of the snow storm. I have a feeling that was a really bad decision....

Feb 19, 2014 - Day 4

I got a good night's sleep, however my bronchitis is a little worse today. Jim, Kevin, Dave and I went for a ski at about 10:30 this morning. It was pretty warm out for this time of year. Kevin & Jim have been really helpful choosing parts of the Korteloppett trail for our daily skis so that I will have at least some idea of what the trail is like before the race. My main squeeze, coach and inspiration for doing this had a hard day. Dave has chronic pain since a car accident several years ago and the hills we did today sent his pain level...

Feb 18, 2014 - Day 2

I was too tired to make an entry last night. It snowed almost all day and no grooming was done on the trails. Everybody stayed in their nice warm condos. Except us of course. We trudged out in 4-6 inches of snow covered trails. It sure made for soft landings when I fell. Dave had to drop out because going up any hills was aggravating his constant back pain. Jim, Kevin & I skied around the Telemark Lodge hills for over an hour for approximately 2.5-3 miles before we decided it was time to go in. This morning I've got a bit of a cough. Time...

Feb 18, 2014 - Day 3

Having a great day. It stopped snowing last night and the trails were groomed today. Dave, Jim, Kevin & I skied a few miles on the North End Trails and turned off on the trail where the Birkebeiner skiers split off from the Korteloppett skiers. I took one fall today and the snow was so deep on the edge of the trail that I almost disappeared. Dave has been feeding us very well as usual. Yesterday we had one of his famous soups, chicken wings, salad and a fresh roll. Tonight, we had Mediterranean rice, salmon, red potatoes and salad. Then we...

Feb 16, 2014 - Day 1

We woke up to about 3 inches of snow, so our trip had to wait for Dave to plow us out, plow his Dad's driveway, my Mom & Dad's driveway and the storage building. Then we finished packing, loaded the car to the brim, popped in a book on tape and headed for Cable Wisconsin. It was a nice drive except for Dave's back is really bothering him. The Telemark lodge is closed, but we got a condo on the Telemark property so we are less than a third of a mile from the start of the race. Tomorrow weather permitting, I'm going to start skiing the Birkie...

Jul 22, 2011 - Lake Namakagon

Up the road, about five hours from Baraboo, is Cable, Wisconsin, where we went to visit Clark’s aunt. She lives on Lake Namakagon -- one of Wisconsin’s beautiful lakes. Our grandson loved spending time on the lake and visiting the area – especially Bayfield, on Lake Superior. There were raspberries to pick. We spent some time in nearby Cable, where we visited the local museums and toured around the town to see the statues that were there. Sitting on the deck, we saw the resident loon and finally heard one the morning we left.
