Jun 22, 2009 - Drive to Bayfield, WI

Breakfast then left for Bayfield, WI. When we got to the campground, we had trouble finding the owner to check in. He had left a note saying he was working in the shower house, but we didn’t know where that was. Finally we just started driving thru the campground and found it. He checked us in, but we didn’t like the site he put us at so we asked if we could move. So glad we moved - we now have a beautiful view - on top of a hill overlooking the water and Madeline Island. After setting up we drove into town. We had lunch at a cute...

Jun 5, 2009 - Bayfield, WI - Apostle Island cruise

We boarded the Island Princess at 10 am and headed out into the islands. It was COLD and WINDY, but the sun was shining and we had dressed warmly. As it turned out, we were the only two passengers who stayed up on the top deck through the entire trip. We found a windbreak behind the pilot house and were not blown around as much as those further aft. An Indian legend says the the original man came to the Bayfield area to trap a beaver. He chased the beaver into the bay then built a dam across the end of a bay. But, a big storm came up and...

Jun 4, 2009 - Bayfield, WI

We left Munising and headed to Bayfield, Wisconsin, and the Apostle Islands. We travelled through beautiful woods again today. We saw a bald eagle flying in the wild. We saw a large doe walk up to the left side of the road, look both ways, and casually walk across the road in front of us and an oncoming car. She had plenty of time and knew it. We crossed the Eastern/Central time zone and were soon after that crossing the Wisconsin state line at about 1:00 pm Central time. Finally, we were out of Michigan, but we enjoyed Michigan and could...

Aug 4, 2008 - Day 114 Bayfield Wisconsin

Day 114 Monday 4th August Bayfield Wisconsin Weather: fine and hot. The weather has been very kind to us since we returned to Canada and the USA with very little rain and just with a few overcast days. We continued our nautical theme today as we drove eastwards along the shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin. We visited the Iron River National Fish hatchery which was quite interesting once we could see the fish. It was a self guided tour. In one shed we could see the fingerlings, the next shed was dark and the third shed we found some...

Jul 11, 2008 - Bayfield, Wisconsin

During the day, we relocated from Aitkin, MN to Bayfield, WI traveling via Duluth, MN. We departed around 9:00 AM with the temperatures in the mid 60’s. As we neared Duluth, it became very foggy with visibility severely reduced allowing travel in the 15 – 25 mile per hour range. Not knowing what the diesel prices would be in Wisconsin, we exited the freeway for fuel. We had been watching the temperature in the truck and just before we stopped for fuel, it hit 47 degrees. Before fueling the truck, I had to go into the trailer and change into...

Aug 22, 2007 - Travel day to Bayfield, Wisconsin...

We pulled out at 11:05am. Right on time! Planning to go less than 100 miles today, even though we are crossing the bridge into Superior, Wisconsin. I decided that we should take Hwy 13 to our destination of Bayfield, WS, based on the Atlas. It looked like a waterfront drive a good portion of the way. It's not! There are too many trees to see much more than an occasional glimpse of Lake Superior. Disappointing. But a pretty drive most of the way. Lots of farms & cattle along the way. Not much else. A couple of tiny towns. We arrived about...

Aug 15, 2007 - Bayfield, WI

The 15th of Aug. we were in Bayfield, WI. We were camped right on the lake and the weather was beautiful for a cruise. The cruise was over 4 hours long and we got back after dark. Some of the caves we saw were 20 feet deep. Boaters and kyacker ride into them. Susan's stats are: Lake Superior would cover North and South America with one foot of water. A lady told us the lake was 18 inches below normal and that one inch of the lake's surface would provide enough water for the Twin Cities for a year. We had driven from Two Harbors that morning...

Aug 4, 2006 - Bayfield, Wisconsin

Friday, August 4, the whole tour group got on a bus and headed for Bayfield, Wisconsin at 8:00 am. It was an hour ride to Bayfield. We boarded the boat the Island Princess for a three-hour tour of the Apostle Islands. There are 22 islands that make up this National Park. Most of the islands have lighthouses. The most interesting island is Devil's Island, which has the Sea Caves and a lighthouse. It was great weather and nice boat ride. After the cruise we were taken to the Rittenhouse Inn for a fancy lunch. They explained each course and...

Jul 28, 2006 - Apostle Islands

Today we move 180 miles west to Bayfield, WI. near the Apostle Islands. We are still on the shores of Lake Superior, but it is amazingly hot here, compared to the weather we just left in Michigan. The temperature is 99F when we arrive at the campground. A storm passed by just to the south of us and the temp dropped to 72F, very nice. As luck would have it there is an art auction going on in Bayfield tonight. So we attend, and get to see some of the local artists and their work. There is also an "Art in the Park" all weekend, in the downtown...

Aug 4, 2002 - Bayfield, Wi.

Bayfield, Wi. belongs on everyone's "must visit" list. Unfortunately, they need a new representative at the visitor's center -- he would scare the most hardy away, barking orders about what people can and cannot do -- what is and is not available. Fortunately, we ignored him. Generally, we have found visitors centers to be a great resource to an area - and we know lodging here on a weekend was going to be tight. We had even resigned ourselves to traveling away from here, and coming back during the week. Managed to secure a room for Sun. -...
