Aug 12, 2010 - Twelve, Seriously

It took a week of being parked in Minnesota, but our new Ready Brake hitch finally arrived and we are back on the road. We drove to Wisconsin’s extreme north and visited the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The Apostle Islands are located in Lake Superior, surrounding Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula. It is unclear how they got their name. Since they are called “Apostle” Islands, I expected there to be twelve islands and each island to be named after one of the twelve apostles (Peter, James, James, Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke, John,...

Jul 25, 2010 - To Bayfield, WI

On June 24, we crossed from North Dakota back into Minnesota. It is July 25 and we will leave Minnesota today. Some places we just like. Minnesota has been a great state to visit but we now head to Wisconsin. We travel east on Route 210 through Jay Cooke State Park. We happen to know a place to fish. John gives the St. Louis River one more look. For a moment, we consider staying another day. We see a sign for kayak races. That would be neat to watch. Our GPS wants to take us through Duluth and Superior. We are determined to avoid them. We...

Jul 21, 2010 - Bayfield, WI

Wednesday July 21st. – Tried to upload several photos. There was a glitch. Will retry tomorrow. As we had planned, we took the car for an early brief tour of the Bayfield, WI area. It was so charming that we decided to say over & Allan wanted to take a “cruise” of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. We walked around the marina & area for a while, then returned to the rig to move sites which was required for us to stay over another night. This new site was much easier to level. Don’t know what creatures live here but Bailey is crazy about...

Jul 20, 2010 - Bayfield, WI

Tues. July 20th – just think, I could be home sweltering. Instead we are in Bayfield, WI, up near the Apostle Islands. I live in the west! Sioux is spelled this way. Canada is French. Sault is spelled this way! So it is Sault Ste. Marie. Pronounced Sue…. so sue me! At noon we drove from the RV park at the north end of Duluth to a vehicle repair/tire garage, at the south end of Duluth, where we spent the afternoon. It turned out that the missing tire sensor did its’ job. The light on the dash board indicated a problem. That tire had the...

Jun 20, 2010 - Summer 2010/To Alaska - Travel (Bayfield, WI)

In the morning, Gary’s pump repair efforts seemed to be for naught – the pump did not work again. Out came the toolbox and off he went to work on the wires again. This time he opened the connections and sprayed then all with WD40. Once everything was re-connected, the pump seemed to work fine. After showers and breakfast, we hit the road around 8:30 AM. Today’s drive was not scheduled to be very long; but, all of it was on two-lane roads. Lunch was again in the motor home in one of the nice roadside parking areas in Michigan. By 2:00 PM, we...

Aug 30, 2009 - Bayfield, WI

Other stop we made before arriving in the UP was Bayfield, WI. Bayfield sits on Lake Superior and is surrounded by the Apostle islands. There are 22 islands that make up the apostle islands. We spent two days exploring the area. The first day we decided to do some sea (lake really) kayaking. We signed up for an all day trip. They that took us to the other side of the peninsula where there are cliffs and numerous caves. We were in a double kayak and wetsuits, water temp averages 38 degrees in the lake but along the shore it was in the high...

Jul 1, 2009 - North Dakota - Fairview Bridge

The Fairview bridge is located just inside the North Dakota state line on the East side of the state. It was built in 1914 by the Great Northern Railroad to accommodate commercial barges and boats along the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. By the time the construction was complete, commercial traffic had stopped coming through that area so the expensive lift components were actually only used once - to test them out. After that, the bridge was used very lightly by trains and autos and was finally closed in 1956. At the end of the bridge is...

Jun 25, 2009 - Has Art met his match ???

If you know Art, you also know how much he loves his red wine. He had 54 cases when we closed down the houses in Mooresville and Charlotte. Most of it is stored at my sister's house in Atlanta, a LOT of it is traveling with us. Yes, Art loves his red wine! We met a delightful couple while together in a campground in the Apostle Islands, Wisconsin. The husband (un-named to protect the innocent)loves beer as much as Art loves red wine. They also travel fulltime in their RV and love good beer so much that most of their RV storage bays are...

Jun 25, 2009 - Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua

We had a blast tonight attending a special music show at the Big Top Tent in Bayfield. It's one of the last remaining big top tent shows in the US. They hold concerts, lectures, plays etc. each week during the Summer on the tent stage. Everything is very casual. People bring their food and drinks into the tent area and make themselves comfortable while enjoying the music or whatever is going on that given night. The show we attended was "The Best of the Big Top" and included singing, fabulous guitar, cello, violin, drums, poetry, songs...

Jun 23, 2009 - Apostle Islands Boat Tour

I had made reservations for the boat tour - boarding was 9:30am this morning. There was a line when we got to the dock about 9:20 but it wasn’t too bad. I had reserved upper deck and we got seats in the front of the boat - sitting backwards. We went passed many of the islands - they all looked the same though. On the outer island, Devil’s Island we saw some really nice sea caves. Luckily the fog cleared up so we could see them. In some areas the fog was extremely thick and the boat had to sound their horn every few minutes. We got back a...

Northwest 2009

Jun 23, 2009 - Apostle Islands/Bayfield, Wisconsin

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is comprised of 22 islands surrounding the northern tip of Wisconsin's Bayfield Peninsula on Lake Superior. We camped at a small, but lovely campground approximately 5 miles from Bayfield, a delightful little town with several art galleries and gift stores, ferries to Madeline Island (largest and only inhabited Apostle Island, marina and lovely homes. We rode the Harley many, many miles through the spectacular scenery of thick forests of trees, along the lake coastline and beaches and through small...

Jun 22, 2009 - Apostle Islands/Madeline Island

We took the ferry over to Madeline Island, the only inhabited island in the Apostle Islands. The island was only 14 miles long and a few miles wide. It was too much area to ride on a bicycle, so we elected to take the Harley instead. Ironically, we were told that a Harley Rally was going to be held that very weekend on the island. Had we known, we could have planned our trip for the next day so we could have joined in on the fun. The best part about the island was a bar/restaurant that had a great sense of humor. They let anybody and...
