Dec 16, 2018 - Whistle Stop RV Resort (12/9/18)

This is a brand new RV park in Abilene. We stayed in Site #46. All the sites are pull-thru with full hookups on a gravel pad. It is quite large and has many amenities. There is a very nice bathhouse and laundry, swimming pool, pickleball court, cable, free wifi and playground for kids. It is located right off I-20 and is very convenient. The drive over was easy with no rain and finally lots of sun. We are traveling to the southwest to find sun and warm weather, but so far we haven't found it. In fact we found remnants of snow along the side...

May 2, 2018 - Homeward Bound

Here for the night and then moving on ... So for those of you that are continuing to follow us on our way home, last night we were in Abilene Tx. A pretty bad series of storms came through Texas into Oklahoma during the night .. luckily we experienced only bad thunderstorms and lightning and not the hail and tornadoes expected. We slept through it and by the time we were ready to roll this morning it had passed. The weather Gods continue to smile on us. That was the first bad weather we have experienced on this journey.

Apr 27, 2018 - Get the heck out of Pecos...please

Our plan is to get up early and get out. We have a 260 mile drive to get to our stop for the weekend in Abilene, TX. As usual I woke up before 5:30 a.m. and forced myself to stay in bed until 6:30. Then up, fix breakfast and get ready for the day. A lot to do and getting out of Pecos was our goal. Breakfast, ready for the day and out before 8:00 a.m. Sue was fixing her breakfast so we were really going to get ahead of schedule. After I got the water unhooked and all the gear stowed, I checked my watch and SHAZAM...it was 9:30. What the...

Apr 15, 2018 - Magnolia Silos

Today we drove from Rusk to Abilene Texas mostly on 84 west hoping to see some impressive countryside. Very hilly (surprised us .. thought Texas was flat and open), lots of cows, sheep, goats, a few llamas and farmland. Could Have been any state USA. No oil wells but plenty of wind mills and (Jennifer) Dairy Queens! The highlight of the day ..Waco .. Chip and Joanna's Magnolia Silos. Of course as luck would have it .. it's Sunday and they are closed so no autograph, no picture with them, not even a t-shirt 𯘟 maybe another trip .. without...

Feb 27, 2018 - Abilene, Abilene, Prettiest Town That I've Ever Seen (one cowboy's opinion)

We spent last night in Shreveport, Louisiana at another WalMart. We are getting to be experts at this. Dog and people got to walk some which we all needed. I'm not sure about Louisiana. I smiled and nodded to lots of people. The only friendly people I found were the ladies at the welcome center and the WalMart greeter. Of course this is not a scientific experiment. I realize I may look like a mass murderer after a few days in the camper trying to conserve water. No, I don't want a motel. Larry and I will conserve water together...

Aug 8, 2017 - Shopping for a new motor home, then heading toward Ruidoso

Woke up in Alvarado and went to Motor Home Specialists down the road to look at Class C motorhomes. This place is done right—enormous area covered with motorhomes and trailers (but mostly motorhomes) with clean facilities and efficient looking operations. Unfortunately their selection for Class C homes was limited, but we did have a chance to see several that could give us a sense of what the life in a Class C would be like. We saw a couple that would do, but not yet convinced that they will offer us a lot more than our current truck and...

We drove an extra few hours again today, to be closer to Kerrville. We are in Abilene, which is just under 200 miles from our winter home. We will be there by noon or shortly thereafter tomorrow! The high tomorrow is 76 degrees! I can't wait to put my shorts and sandals on! The campground is saving several sites for us to choose from when we get there. Nice! It's hard to believe, but this will be our 5th year in Kerrville. I already have some new day trip photo ops percolating in my brain. While we were in northern Texas this morning, we...

Nov 19, 2016 - Abilene, TX

Abilene is a one-night stop for us. We are on our way to Fredericksburg!! Texas highways are great. We are far from an interstate highway, but Texas still has good roads to travel. But even after traveling in Utah and Arizona, I would say that Texas highways are highest quality, AND the most deserted of them all. Mile after mile of scrubland or cattle range, a house every 3-5 miles, a town every 30 miles! The amount of deer roadkill is depressing.

Aug 31, 2016 - Abilene, TX

After a night of off and on heavy rain storms, we had a cloudy but dry morning for our drive from Lubbock to Abilene. There was a lot of evidence of the storms as we drove out of town. Many of the farm fields had what looked like 6 inches of standing water and the sides of the road were flooded. As we continued south, it remained green but dry. When we reached 1-20 and headed further east, we stopped for lunch. Then we only had about an hour until our destination. We stayed at this RV park on our way out in May and it will be our 2nd to...

May 14, 2016 - Abilene, TX

We are off on our 3 1/2 month, 113 day summer trip....but later than we expected. The post office decided to throw us a curve ball. I requested our mail be forwarded to a private mailbox, which will digitally show us our mail. Well, even after submitting a huge amount of paperwork to the post office, which was notorized, AND getting an approval from the post office in writing, it seems our mail was flagged for some reason and cannot be forwarded. Of course, trying to get to the bottom of this has taken 2 days and a trip to the post office...

Mar 16, 2016 - Abilene, TX

After a wonderful stay, we headed out Hwy 87 to Hwy 283 into Abilene staying at the Abilene KOA. This is a part of Texas we have never been in. We discovered a museum called Frontier Texas and enjoyed it immensely. It told the story of the "Wild West" with Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and the then the cattle drives that went through what is now downtown. It gave the history of Comanche Indians that ran the Apaches out and then became the warriors of the entire region. Time well spent!
