Oct 23, 2019 - Back at Hickory Hollow

The trip home is almost done. One more night at our favorite stop over in Western PA, Hickory Hollow Campground. Across the road from the entrance is Haunted Hollow with attractions like the haunted Bruner Boarding House, Hollywood Haunted Hay Ride, Milford Asylum, Toxic Wasteland, and Dead End Cornfield. We didn't visit, but you could see activity in the area after it got dark. Another nice thing about Hickory Hollow is that it is dark at night. It was a clear night tonight so I was able to get some shots of the night sky. We'll be headed...

Sep 17, 2019 - Heading West

We left home this morning and headed west a little later than I would have liked (1200). I had a few errands to run before we could leave home. The most important was to pick up 4 gold coins from the Elsmere Police that were stolen from Winnie a couple of weeks ago. No trace of the silver dollars or WWII-era Mauser pistol that were also stolen. I'm glad to have the gold back, but disappointed we didn't get the pistol back as it was Sue's Dad's. We need to be in the St. Louis area by 9/21 so we can park Winnie and then drive to St. Paul, MN...

Jul 16, 2019 - Day 4

Today we will be visiting one of the newest national sites, the Flight 93 National Memorial. The guidebooks suggested getting there early to get a parking space. During the bulk of the day, the parking lot fills. We got down for breakfast early, and were on the road by 8:45. We had a 25 minute drive to the site (Miss Google had an old entry point) and parked at around 9:15. When you drive through the entry to the park, you go about 4 miles to parking and the visitors center. Near the entrance you pass the Tower of Voices (more on that...

Jul 15, 2019 - Day 3

We started today getting up and ready to have breakfast around 9:00 and on the road by 9:30. At 5 minutes of 9 I remembered the desk staff saying that on weekdays breakfast ended at 9:00. We left the room and ran down to get breakfast. I collected my waffles, bagel coffee and juice just as they were starting to pick up. Similarly, Cheryl gathered all she would want. We finished by 9:30 then went to finish packing and check out. We were on the road a little after 10. Our first stop was James Buchanan's home, Wheatland in Lancaster, PA. I...

Jun 3, 2019 - Hickory Hollow Hiatus

We always make a stop at Hickory Hollow after the farm to dump the waste tanks and relax. This time Finn and Ozzie decided they wanted to spend the night in Winnie with Nanny and Grandpop. Fin rode with me and Ozzie rode in the Fit with Sue from the farm to Hickory Hollow. We decided to go out to eat at a nearby restaurant rather than cook in Winnie. After the food was served, Finn got a pale look on his faced and lost the chocolate milk hed had just drank. Luckily, Sue caught most of it in the milk cup preventing a larger catastrophe....

Jun 2, 2019 - Weekend at the Farm

We wrapped up the family weekend at Big Spring Farm on Sunday and it's taking me a week to catch up with my journal because of computer and internet problems. It always good to get together with the kids (adults and grandkids) for a few days at the farm. Annie and Ozzie arrived on Thursday along with Jared, Shane, Jess, and Ryleigh. Kyle and Finn had to wait until Friday afternoon because Finn had an interview at the school where he will be attending Kindergarten in the fall. He was excited to be going to a new school. Once everyone arrived...

May 29, 2019 - Stormy Day

We got off to an early (1100) start today with Ringo's cooperation. For the second time in a row, Ringo voluntarily climbed into his carrier. I zipped it up and we went out to Winnie. I guess he finally figured out the tell tale signs of getting ready to leave and has decided that his home on wheels isn’t so bad. The weather was threatening most of the day as we traveled across Pennsylvania on the Turnpike. We got a little bit of rain in central Pennsylvania, but were getting severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warning on the phones,...

Jun 7, 2016 - On Our Way

Planned departure time from Newark was 1000. Actual departure time was 1230. I thought I had things well in hand, but I was mistaken. Sanitizing the toilets, turning off the water, reprograming the thermostat among other things to get the house ready for our prolonged absence took longer than planned. The easiest part of packing this morning was getting Ringo into Winnie. He seems to be making the transitions much easier with each trip. The last thing to do this morning was to load up the Pee Wee Herman bicycle that Sue bought Sunday. I...

Jul 29, 2015 - Three States

We drove along I70 today through Ohio, across the panhandle of West Virginia, and into southwestern Pennsylvania. This stretch of I70 is among the worst road surfaces we encountered on this trip. The rough ride along with the heat saps the energy from you as you drive. We're nearing the end of this trek. We pulled into Hickory Hollow RV Park for an overnighter where we've stayed 5 or 6 times before. It's convenient to the farm as well as the 9/11 Memorial in Shanksville. We'll be spending the next several days at Big Springs Farm, the...

Sep 9, 2013 - Somserset, PA

A shorter drive to our next stop where we'll be for 2 days in order to visit the Flight 93 National Memorial. If you are ever in the area, we highly recommend the smorgasbord at the Oakhurst Tea Room. Good, hearty Pennsylvania Dutch cooking at its best! We visited the Flight 93 Memorial on September 9th and they were in the final stages of preparing for the 9/11 ceremony. We attended a wonderful presentation by the Park Rangers and learned so much more of what actually transpired on that terrible day. When the terrorist-hijackers took over...

Oct 28, 2012 - OTRA - PA - Somerset

10/27/12 We continued our run from Hurricane Sandy around 10:00 a.m. by heading for our final stop west at the Hickory Hollow Campground in Rockwood, PA (just south of Somerset). I don’t know if it’s going to be far enough to avoid the high wind gusts but it’s the best we can do since so many campgrounds along this route are closed for the season. As we drove along the PA Turnpike from Harrisburg, we must have passed over 100 electric line trucks heading east in groups of 5 and 10. And Asplundh Chipper Trucks (over 100 of them, too!) And...

Oct 6, 2012 - Heading Home

The coach was ready for us late Friday afternoon, Oct. 5, so we stayed one more night in the hotel. Saturday morning, Oct. 6, we checked out of the hotel about 9:00 am and headed east toward Niagara. It was sunny and much cooler, as a cold front with rain passed through last night We crossed over a large body of water into Hamilton, Ontario. There was heavy industry with large piles of coal. We saw lots of greenhouses and vineyards around Lincoln, Ontario. Then we saw hydroponic gardens. We saw a shipwreck at Jordan Harbor. As we approached...
