Sep 14, 2019 - A Chapter Ends

In 2012 we decided to spend several months each year visiting the 29 States where America's 62 National Parks are located. The overall plan was vague but the goal seemed well-defined enough to accomplish. There were plenty of travel tales on mytripjournal to learn from -- every one of them as individualized as the people who shared them. What none of the journals explain is how difficult it is to focus on just the National Parks. If we are in Utah's Arches National Park why not pop down to visit a few interesting National Monuments like...

Aug 12, 2019 - Preparation

After months of preparation -- the Grand Finale Pittsburgh's perfect summer weather and more than 2 weeks left on our pool passes did not make it easy to be leaving tomorrow, BUT...to tent camp in the Rockies any later in the year was to take a huge chance of camping in miserable cold and snow. Keeping that feeling of miserable cold and snow in mind we packed at least 4 layers: - thermal long underwear - long-sleeved, nylon-polyester hiking shirts - fleece jackets - windbreaker jackets and pants - gloves and toques - hoodie sweat...

Jul 18, 2019 - Day 6

Today is our day to explore Pittsburgh. The first thing we want to see if the Andy Warhol Museum. We slept in a little today. The museum is within walking distance to our hotel (20 minutes) and doesn't open until 10 AM. We got our breakfast (usual Hampton Inn) and started out following Miss Google's directions. It was overcast this morning, but did we remember our umbrellas? Of course not. The directions told us to go over one of the bridges across the Allegheny River. Getting there we found the bridge closed due to construction. Not a...

Jul 17, 2019 - Day 5

First of all, I want to let you know that I have loaded photos from yesterday. Now, on to today. We once again started the day a little early not knowing exactly how long we would be spending at the Lincoln Highway Experience. We had breakfast, packed and checked out of the hotel. Good bye to Somerset, PA. We were on the road by about 9:15 and headed for the experience. For those who might be unfamiliar with Lincoln Highway, it was the first attempt to create a road completely across America. Eventually it ran from Times Square in NYC, to...

Oct 29, 2018 - Not just a bucket list

In 2012, when we formed a vague plan to visit as many USA National Parks as possible we had only one requirement for the visits -- we would spend enough time in each park to truly experience its unique features. This was not to be a bucket list quest to check off parks after spending only a few hours driving through them or touring their Visitor Center. Originally we were not planning to include National Monuments or State Parks, but as we learned more we found them often as, or sometimes more, compelling as the National Parks. The more...

Oct 5, 2018 - Pittsburgh

A morning full of errands to get the rig ready. Windshield wipers, motor oil, DEF and of course we had to go to Costco as well. This Costco had Italian sausage in addition to hot/Polish dogs. Bob found a down jacket he had to have! Relaxing in the afternoon with Michael and Susan. Waiting for the Kavanaugh supreme court vote outcome announcement although no surprises anticipated. Hopefully, we won’t have to listen to any more rhetoric about it!! Tonight we are going to Istanbul Grill, a Turkish restaurant. We started with a tapas tray with...

Aug 24, 2018 - Driving West Again?

Our multi-year quest to experience all of America's National Parks was going to take us west again in 2018...to the mountains and canyons of Colorado, the high Basin and Range formations of Nevada and the rivers of Utah. We had planned similar trips in previous years and had by now worked out a "system" for planning the itinerary and packables. The route would be familiar, even if we didn't stop in the same towns every year. This year was special, though, because our final destination would be a family celebration of my Mom's 90th birthday...

Aug 24, 2018 - Preparation, Planning, Gear

In the course of this year's 2-month trip we planned to visit high elevation National Parks/Monuments and then drop down to the bottom of Stillwater Canyon to paddle the Green River in Canyonlands. Weather might possibly range from freezing temperatures at night to downright hot days in the 80sF. These challenges we knew how to pack for -- layers! We were also experienced at packing the car for 2 months of tent camping. On the other hand, the paddling portion was a huge unknown. Which outfitter should we rent canoes from? Where were the...

Jun 2, 2018 - Pittsburgh, PA and Cuba, NY

One of the niceties of RV living is the freedom to change plans when needed or desired. All plans are etched in pencil! Our visit to High Point, North Carolina was extended by about six weeks so we could assist Deb's mother, Lea, with doctor and hospital visits. Consequently, we scratched our planned four month trip to Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic Maritime Provinces of Canada, and Maine. We elected, instead, to stay within a fairly short drive from High Point just in case. One of the trips we had on our bucket list was to Pittsburgh,...
