Sep 15, 2018 - "Heading Oout, to San Francisco..."

Took I-580 out of Reno which became US 50 south of Carson City. US 50 initially travels south, then due west to Lake Tahoe. Was kind of winging it because I couldn’t find a lot of details online for things to do. There was a paddlewheel boat sightseeing cruise out of Zephyr Cove but it was $64 and 2.5 hours long. I wasn’t sure I want to commit that much time or money to the process. But stop briefly at the dock and took a couple of pictures. Then continued south to South Lake Tahoe. This area was very commercialized and everything was...

Sep 14, 2018 - Downtown Reno & Virginia City

Was downtown by 9. Wanted to stop at the visitor’s center which only opened at 10. Walked over to Lake Street where the old Reno Arch is located, then up to Virginia St and Commercial Row where the new Reno Arch is located. Virginia Street from 2nd to 6th is basically all casinos. There are also casinos spread out in some other sections of town. I also check out City Plaza along the Truckee River. Perused the racks at visitor’s center and just wasn’t seeing much of anything of interest. Since I don’t gamble and don’t drink not much to do in...

Sep 13, 2018 - Crossing the Coast and Sierra Nevada Mountains

This was an all driving day. Left Eureka at 8:05. It was an up and down, twisting and turning, keeping an eye out for wildlife and rocks on the road kind of trip on CA 299 to Redding. Numerous spots there was one lane road due to construction so we had to stop for traffic coming the other way. West of Redding in the area of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area there were burnt trees from what was apparently a fairly recent forest fire. There was still the smell of burnt wood in the air like when a fireplace fire goes out. Then had to...

Aug 29, 2018 - Exploring northwestern California

No problems getting to Reno yesterday. The drive on 89 up to and around Lassen Peak was very pleasant. The GPS had me go on a business route to the west of Reno to get to Verdi where the campground is and that was a bit tricky, but liked it better than going through downtown Reno (I think)! I met Michelle and her daughter Shelby last night at a Mexican restaurant close by and that was good. Today, I went back into California via I-80 to see Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, and Boca Reservoir. I was also looking for letterboxes and that hobby had me...

Aug 28, 2018 - Reno NV

We put a lot of miles on in two days. We drove through Northern California to Reno NV. There was a lot of variety in the scenery but nothing real outstanding. We have never been to Reno before so this was a good opportunity to visit it. Not a bad town but I doubt that we will rush back. The second day we drove on over to Salt Lake City UT. Some pretty scenery and interesting places. The dessert was not at it’s best because of the drought. We drove past the Bonneville Salt Flats which was neat but a little hard to take a picture. We then...

May 29, 2018 - Bordertown RV Park

/// Bordertown RV Park Reno, NV May 29, 2018 A Travel Day: With a trip of only about 100 miles facing us today we delayed our departure until last minute. Finally at 10:45 A.M. we were hitched up and headed north on US Hwy 395. Our route today would be entirely on US Hwy 395 No. Our destination is the Bordertown RV Park located just off US Hwy 395 north of Reno. We have stayed here previously. Last visit was nine years ago. The weather today was clear and mild. The road conditions were very good and the traffic varied from very light to...

Oct 15, 2017 - in the biggest little city

We found a play we wanted to see being performed in downtown Reno, so we waited until today's performance to drive to the central city to see it and the rest of downtown. Reno calls itself a city, but it feels small, especially when you compare it to Las Vegas. The central casino area was easily explored in less than an hour and has 5% of the casinos and hotels LV has. Some of them have seen better days, but the city is trying hard to keep up appearances and attract visitors, both local and international. This weekend about twenty mural...

Sep 9, 2017 - Trains & Saloons

Today was a trip by train from Carson City to Virginia City on the V&T Railroad. The Virginia & Truckee, 21 mile standard gauge line was up & running in 1870 working the Comstock mines & was known as the wealthiest short line in the world. The rest of the history for this line made it world renowned. It ran it's last revenue run in 1950. Our 21 mile 3 hour return trip was really interesting with engineers, brakemen & conductors. Then there was a 3 hour stop in Virginia city walking the boardwalks, visiting the Saloons like Bucket of Blood &...

Sep 8, 2017 - Balloons

Today was Balloon Day! We were up at 3:45 a.m and had our first Uber ride to San Rafael Park for the Glow Show at 5:15 a.m. There are a lot of people every age, walking down a long path through the trees, in the pitch black carrying blankets & wearing jackets. It is brisk this morning. We find a spot on the grass for our chairs & watch the show. Pretty awesome as 90 Hot Air Balloons fire up their burners in time with pre arranged music, lighting up the night. At 7 a.m. is the Mass Ascension of all the balloons, each in their prearranged...

May 4, 2017 - Keystone RV Park, Reno, NV

Leaving Fernley on such a fine day for great weather and having spent a great time with brother and sister leaves us with warm hearts and smiles. On our way, Dave noted Dudley has taken us 2,000 miles already AND this is his tenth overnight stop for us. All this in the nearly 3 months we've had him. "There'll not be any grass growing under our feet!!!" Our coming to Reno is simple, visit kids and grandkids. Our stay here is for 1 month, possibly an extra 4 to 7 days. We'll be getting as much time with them as we can before hitting the...

May 1, 2017 - A new year - a familiar Adventure

It's been a while - two years, three months to be pretty exact, since I've been on the open road with my HitchHiker. My brief reunion with the gang at the B&B REWIND in Vacaville April 2016 can't really count. It was too close to home. And before I begin writing about my current travels (I'm already behind myself) I just must post a few pictures of the incredible adventure I had just last week. I had spent much of the 1990s pretending I was a cowboy. I met new friends and enjoyed adventures that, to me, were unmatched. We lived in an old...

Jan 30, 2017 - Home Sweet Home

We picked up the “Dream” today and moved back in. Yippee! Jerry had to use a snow shovel to make a path between the two RV’s. The campground also sent a man over with a snowplow to clear some of the snow in the driveway so we could bring the RV back in. We moved boxes and unpacked all day. Jerry brought the boxes to the door and I unloaded while he went for more. Jerry will be taking the loaner RV back in the morning. They did a great job on the step and other repairs. We are happy campers again and will be back on the road soon. Check back...
