May 28, 2009 - Side Match day at Western States

May 28, 2009 Follow this link to see us on the map: http://map.datastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=5354 We are in Fernley, Nevada, about 30 miles east of Reno/Sparks. I got up early to attend registration and get ready to shoot side matches. The main match starts tomorrow, so I wanted to be sure that all of my guns were working correctly and to compete in the long range competition. I came without a guncart, and one the the first things I did was to talk to Quick Cal, one of the match directors, about borrowing one. He got me a loaner,...

May 27, 2009 - Virginia City and Cafe Orozco in Sparks

May 27, 2009 61.2 miles today. 1991.4 total miles to date. (No Photos today. Susan and I both forgot to take our cameras—so those of you with photo fatigue can gets some rest.) We moved out of Silver City RV Resort before 9am with no problems and drove on over to Fernley, Nevada. Our plan is to get set up, then take the jeep to Virgina City. On the way to Fernley we passed the road up to Virginia City, so we had a good idea where it was. I had been told that, as a cowboy, I needed to see Virgina City. Desert Rose is a modern park but it is...

Sep 7, 2008 - CATCH UP

Hello Everyone, Just a note to catch up. We are currently in Fernley, Nevada (for my Navy Friends, that's about 20 Miles from Fallon.) We arrived in Fernley yesterday afternoon (Saturday) after a drive (about 190 miles) from Upper Lake, California on California Highway 20. Highway 20 is a pretty drive but it was slow going because of the mountains. Once we hit Interstate 80 just a few miles before Reno, we began making some time. We wanted to find a half price campground and our Passport America campground book (our half price campground...

Sep 7, 2008 - Fernley, NV

Movig on we went to Reno, NV, we had picked up a nail in the jeep tire, so first priority was to find a Firestone that was open as we had bought our tires there. Luckily we were able to park in a Casino parking lot that was just outside of town but only on the other end of the block from Firestone. So we dropped off the jeep and walked back to the RV. After lunch we went in the Casino for a couple of hours to lose a little cash, you know the pockets were getting heavy. We picked up the jeep at 3:30PM and drove to the otherside of town to...

Sep 6, 2008 - Fernley, NV

When we left the Willard Bay State Park on Wednesday morning Sharon's back was hurting pretty bad and mine had been nagging at me for a few days, so we looked for a Chiropractor and found one just a few miles down the road. We stopped in and he was able to take her and I both for an adjustment. He did a great job and we both feel much better now. Wednesday night we stayed in Elko, NV at the Ironhorse RV Park which is a new RV park and pretty nice. A little pricey and there are trains close by, but the noise from them was not to bad that...

Jul 28, 2007 - The Loneliest Road

Today we crossed Nevada on "The Nation's Loneliest Highway" Hwy 50, 345 long miles worth of desolate. We tried to make contact with the Strate's in Ely, but they weren't home. After a full day on the road we stopped at a RV park in Fernley, NV. Here we have internet access and all the comforts of home, so we are finally able to post to our journal. Tomorrow we will be heading into Northern California and maybe on into Oregon if things go well. It's great to be able to do things at our own pace, I think we are spoiled already. Not sure when...

Jun 11, 2007 - Drove Across Nevada

R-Drove across Nevada today. Not too much of interst. Stopped for the night in Fernley, Nevada. Interstate 80 across Nevada is pretty bleak. Fernley is just east of Reno. Before we left home we joined something called Passport America. This "club" gives a 50% discount for staying at campgrounds that are members of the organization. While many campgrounds have restrictions about the number of days, days of the week, or even the months that it can be used, when it can be used the savings on campground fees are great. The campground in Wells...
