Oct 31, 2018 - Wool socks for trick or treat
Happy Halloween everyone! It has been a trick free day. But a cold one. Last night we got down to 28 degrees! It was in the low 30's when we got up, and it topped out at 46 degrees today. But no snow, and it was sunny off and on all day. I had really slow internet yesterday for photos but it's Much better today. We got underway at 0900 mountain time. (I think I made a mistake yesterday and said we lost an hour but we moved ahead one hour to mountain time. Today when we entered Nevada we went back to Washington time.) It was brisk out, but...Jump to full entry
Oct 25, 2017 - A game of chicken in Twin Falls, Idaho
Gotcha with that title, didn't I? We were up getting ready at 0630 (0530 Pacific time) and it was really cold, 32 degrees this morning but clear. It made for brisk walking with Miss Zoey. We got on the road at 0900. We got to Twin Falls and had just turned onto US-93. There was a pick up truck in front of us in the outside lane, and it was a bit windy out. In the bed of this truck was a chest freezer. All of the sudden his tailgate fell down and then the lid to the freezer popped open, the freezer baskets (they were empty) flew out. Then...Jump to full entry
Oct 9, 2017 - It's Nevada, let's boondock tonight
When the weather is nice (not freezing), we like to boondock in an effort to save a little bit of money and also to spend time in a spot that is usually remote, has views and is safe. In our years of travel, we have always noted an abundance of those kinds of opportunities across Nevada. Lots of miles, not a lot of traffic and many areas where you can safely get off the highway for the night. Since we generally stop mid-afternoon, we can see these areas and enjoying them a bit before darkness sets in. Well on this particular day, we have...Jump to full entry
Sep 28, 2017 - Cave Lake
9/28 Cave Lake, Ely Nevada Nevada never ceases to amaze us. We love the discovery part of camping. There are so many surprises and Cave Lake State Park was one. This sweet little lake was quietly tucked in a picturesque river canyon of scrub junipers. At 7200 ft, evidently it is an ice fisherman's dream. All I can say is there were plenty of fish here today. It was a great campground with flush toilets, heated washrooms & showers. As we traveled on Highway 50 we saw the sign that reminded us that it is known as the loneliest road in...Jump to full entry
Aug 29, 2017 - The Loneliest Road and Lassen Volcanic NP
We’ve seen just about every type of landscape on this trip – we’ve crossed numerous mountain ranges and hills, drove through valleys and forests, crossed rivers and streams, seen lakes, creeks, beaches and snow patches, small towns and cities. But I think my favorite, at least today, is the high desert with mountains as the backdrop! We left Shingletown on Sunday and drove to Fallon, NV where we spent one night. This trip took us along US 395 to I-80, near Reno, then to Fallon which is the beginning of US 50, known as the Loneliest Road in...Jump to full entry
Jul 9, 2017 - Update...
Wow, I didn't realize it had been so long since I posted last. Life has changed considerably in the past 6 months. Mom passed on January 10th, 2017 which happened to be Larry's birthday. We were by her side & even though we are so sad for our loss we are so very happy she is free of pain & with our Lord. Larry has been undergoing immune therapy IV drips to fight his cancer. Unfortunately, they were not effective, so just this past week we decided to discontinue them. The side effects were really knocking him down & his pain level increased...Jump to full entry
Apr 16, 2017 - Happy Easter
We hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter with family and friends. We certainly miss being with family on these holidays. Even if we are on the road, we try to have what we consider traditional meals for our family. When I was a kid on Easter morning we used to go to my Grandmom Trotta’s house for breakfast. She always made a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, Italian sausage, and ricotta. She always made Easter bread rings with hard boiled eggs baked inside. We had the scrambled eggs this morning, but I didn’t make the Easter bread. For...Jump to full entry
Apr 15, 2017 - The Loneliest Road in America
We left Delta, UT this morning (Saturday) and headed west along US 50. It was dubbed "The Loneliest Road in America" by a pejorative Life magazine article in the July 1986 issue. The Life article quoted an American Automobile Association spokesperson as saying, "We warn all motorists not to drive there unless they're confident of their survival skills." The stretch of 50 that we covered between Delta and Ely, NV, the first city you come to in Nevada, is 162 miles long with only 2 gas stations and nothing else except scenery. The highway...Jump to full entry
Oct 8, 2016 - Ward Charcoal Ovens...
Our friends John & Joyce arrived today for a one night layover as they make their way to Arizona for the winter. It was really great spending time with them again. You might remember that they are retired United Airline workers & they used to follow this trip journal when they were still worker bees. I believe the story goes that we are the reason they are now full timer's as they loved following our travels. We clearly remember meeting them at a Cracker Barrel in Phoenix, Arizona for about 4 hours our first time together. They had a small...Jump to full entry
Oct 6, 2016 - Surgery for Mom
They have scheduled Mom for surgery next week. I don't know whether to be happy or scared! She's in SO much pain it really does need to happen. A consultation with 3 physicians resulted in a decision that her bones are too soft for screws, bolts etc & the three fractures are too large for cement. And, as you know, her 83 year old heart is diseased and so plugged they were not able to get stents started even though they did a quadruple heart by-pass many years ago. Heart issues were a main drawback in their decision for NO surgery. They did...Jump to full entry
Jun 13, 2016 - Update...
What is it they say about if you don't like the weather just wait 5 minutes??? LOL Well, it's sure been a roller coaster ride here for the past few days. Rain, thunder & lightning & then sun for an hour & then here comes the second wave. It's keeping the surrounding mountain/hills very pretty & green & Mom's lawn as well! We ran a few errands today, leaving in the middle of a storm but all too soon I was quite warm in the shirt I had on & I shed my coat quickly. I now have a t-shirt & flip flops on, lol :) I thought I should post an update...Jump to full entry
Jun 6, 2016 - Hi!
Been hanging out the past couple of days not doing much. Mom is having trouble with pain in her lower back. Not sure if it's a kidney infection, strained back muscle or heart related. We have her on cranberry juice, plenty of water, an antibiotic, muscle creams & relaxers & a full body mas-sager. Trying to cover all the bases. We'd discussed taking her to the doctor this morning but she wants to give it one more day. Hopefully something will kick in today & she'll begin feeling better. It's been quite warm, hitting 90 yesterday, although...Jump to full entry
