May 26, 2020 - Summer Travel Season - Leg #1

/// May 26, 2020 Summer Travel Season 2020 With our travel preparation about completed we decided to depart Yuma a couple days earlier than originally planned. The weather this past several days has been much warmer than expected. The triple digit temperatures were wearing us out. We got off to a good start Tuesday morning for Leg #1 and the 280 mile trip north to Boulder City, NV. Our route would take us north on Hwy 95. Traffic was light, the road conditions were mostly very good and we made good time. We made just two stops along the...

Sep 28, 2019 - Hoover Dam

Hold back the river Day 24 Today we are visiting one of the man-made wonders of the world, The Hoover Dam in Boulder City. We pack up and leaving Williams behind we head for Ash Fork which used to be a town on Route 66. The town grew up around the mining for flagstone which is exported round the world (you may have some in your garden as a patio). This town is very much a town of the past. Once the railway was moved 10 miles away the town began to shrink. Unbelievably there was no water supply here until the 1970's, all the water had to be...

Mar 28, 2019 - The Last Gas

Driving between Las Vegas and Kingman on 93 many times, we have passed this small gas station without ever giving it a single thought. This trip, my wife decided that she needed use of it's restroom. Stopping was a very big surprise, as the pictures will show.

Oct 22, 2018 - Boulder City Monday

We spent the morning sightseeing. We are about 2 miles away from Lake Mead, so we went there first. We actually went to a park above the lake to see the bighorn sheep that are frequent visitors. There were about two dozen scattered around. They seemed pretty used to people, although we all kept our distance. A couple from this area watched me as I took dozens of shots, changed locations, and took more. As I was walking back towards Bill (he tries to stay out of my way when I’m shooting), they approached me and asked me to take their picture...

Oct 21, 2018 - Boulder City, NV

After our last driving day, I hoped we would have an easier day today. And it wasn’t too bad until we got off of I-15 in Nevada, and onto the side highway that took us to Boulder City (about 20 miles south of Vegas). The county did not properly enter the gps coordinates for the side highway into the national database, so our gps thought we were off-roading about a half mile parallel to the highway. I knew what exit we were supposed to take to get to the campground, but then our highway suddenly merged and became a brand new highway (I-11)...

May 17, 2018 - Boulder City, NV - Canyon Trail RV Park

/// May 17, 2018 A Travel Day: With a short haul of just 130 miles in the plan for today, I tried my best to delay our departure until around 10:00 A.M. Nancy gets impatient and is always first ready to travel. I trudged through my departure routine at a leisurely pace and we were hooked up the ready to hit the road by 9:30. Our route today would take us north on Hwy 93 to Jct. I-40 north to Kingman and then north on Hwy 93. The road conditions were mostly good, the weather was clear with expected winds out of the southwest building...

Oct 26, 2017 - Tour of Hoover Dam

October 26 – Tour of Hoover Dam We reserved tickets for the dam tour on-line. This is the second dam tour of our trip, the first being in North Cascades NP. The tour was 30 minutes long and took us to the base where the 50’ inlet tubes are located and to one of the generator rooms. The facility is the property of the Department of the Interior and proceeds from the sale of the power pays for the dam’s upkeep. The structure is 660’ feet thick at the base or over two football field lengths. The structure was built up of blocks of poured...

Apr 23, 2017 - Tehachapi, CA to Boulder City, NV

We left Tehachapi shortly after 8:00 this morning. The Tehachapi Mtns were mostly covered with clouds. It was a little breezy but it was pushing us & not a problem - helped the fuel mileage. We enjoyed the trip across the Mojave desert. The desert mountains & Joshua trees are always interesting to us & there were still wildflowers & bushes blooming in the desert. The wind turbine installations have increased just since we were thru here last October & there were some really huge solar installations near Barstow & close to the CA/NV state...

Mar 25, 2017 - Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

Our big excursion while in Las Vegas was to travel back to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Truly an engineering marvel, this structure made possible the development of so many of the southwest's large metropolitan areas: Los Angeles (they get 50% of the water from the water allocated from the lake), Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas and San Diego. Also, it supplies much of the electric power for the region. Without AC the desert communities never would have flourished.

Sep 19, 2016 - Hoover Dam

Sep 19, 2016: Stayed in Boulder City last night and went to Hoover Dam this morning. My watch put us there an hour early and I'm glad it did as we were the first tour to go through. There was a long line of traffic waiting to get in when we left the place around lunch time. We have spent the afternoon doing some laundry and tomorrow are heading to Valley of Fire SP above Las Vegas. Not stopping in Vegas as I left nothing there last time. Tomorrow night will be spent in Zion NP in Utah. Looking forward to doing the Narrows Hike.

Feb 18, 2016 - Last Day In Las Vegas

Today is our last day in Las Vegas. I marked the map as Boulder City, site of Hoover Dam, so that the map would give a more accurate picture of our route. Today we're into cable television attractions in Las Vegas. We've been by the Pawn Stars shop. It's a tiny little store at the end of The Strip and they only admit a set number of people at one time. Each time we went by, people were lined up outside waiting to get in. We headed over to Rick's Restorations. This guy takes junk, and for a price, restores it to brand new condition. Soda...
