Sep 1, 2018 - Pictured Rocks

We traveled across the UP of Michigan and to the Pictured Rocks national Lakeshore. We've alreadys seen it on the map and decided we had to go do it since we were so close. We drove in the eastern entrance at Grand Marais after stopping and getting a pastie at Hiawatha pasties several miles back. That was a first for us and it was delicious! It's like a meat pie in pastry. The Pictured Rocks road had a small view of Lake Superior and plenty of hiking if you wanted it. To see the actual PR, you would need to take a boat ride or hike it....

Aug 2, 2018 - Waterfalls and Colored Rocks

Since it was raining and overcast on Thursday morning, I drove to to a couple of the waterfalls in the western portion of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Overcast days are good for photographing waterfalls. The geologic formations along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are represented by sandstone cliffs 50-200 ft. high that extend for more than 15 miles along the shoreline. There are sea caves, arches, blowholes, turrets, stone spires, and other features that were sculpted from the cliffs over the centuries by waves and weather. The...

Aug 1, 2018 - We're Staying

We decided to continue on with the trip after spending couple of nights in Newberry Campground in Newberry, MI to do some laundry and relax. On Wednesday we drove to Munising, MI. We'll be staying at the Munising/Pictured Rocks KOA just outside of town. We'll be here for at least 6 nights and are a little more connected here than at Tahquamenon Falls State Park. We're waiting for a new microwave/convection oven to be delivered from Camping World. It's supposed to be here on Monday, the last day of our reservation. So far it's on...

Jul 19, 2018 - Pctured Rocks

Thus July 19 Not much going on today, our Picture d Rocks boat trip is a sunset cruse that starts at 8PM. All day today we hung out at the campsite catching up on things. Went to the Dogpatch for dinner, (another old hangout from my snowmobiling days ). Wanted to get a good seat on the boat ride so we decided we should get to the dock a little early, like two hours to be sure we do. Well, we got there 1:45 minute before departure only to find we would have to stand in line until they opened the gates to allow boarding at 7:45. We got seats...

Jul 18, 2018 - Munising

Wed July 18 Arrived in Munising around noon, only to find our campground is in Christmas, 4.5 miles further west. No big deal, we find the campground is brand new an still under construction. Nice big sites, 30/50 AMP’s of power, with fire pits with attached grates. We set up have a little snack then decide to go for a little ride. We check out the boat docks where we’ll be boarding our Pictured Rocks boat cruse tomorrow. The I decide we need to see if we can find some of the waterfalls outside of town. We find Alger Falls just outside of...

Oct 1, 2017 - Lakeshore from above

Today was the day to see the lakeshore from above. This area has numerous waterfalls so we started with Munising Falls, a very short hike from the parking lot. Next stop was Miners’ Castle, which we saw from the boat below yesterday. Nearby is Miners Falls, 77 wooden steps down (and 77 back up) and a bit of a hike from the parking lot but worth every step. Another stop a ways down the road is a really interesting area called log slide overlook. It’s in the dunes area and appears to be a few hundred feet almost straight down a sandy slope to...

Sep 30, 2017 - Pictured Rocks cruise

After a relaxed morning, we headed to the Pictured Rocks scenic cruise boats and got tickets for the 2:00 departure time. Since it was a beautiful day and a Saturday and everybody else in the area had the same idea we did, they had to send out three boats. I guess we were lucky since I heard one of the “boat drivers” tell another passenger that the wind was so bad the day before that they couldn’t even send the boats out. The rocky coastline, from which the National Lakeshore gets its name, is viewable mostly from the water. The boats...

Sep 29, 2017 - Pointed toward home

Thank goodness it's not a long drive since it was grey and cold and a bit rainy off and on. The wind was gusty as well but the road is lined with lots of large trees that serve as a wind break. There still is almost no fall color yet. We stayed at the newest KOA in the country at Munising, Michigan -- two days old. It used to be another campground, just not KOA. It looks like a state park in the woods but has all the facilities including good cell service and decent wifi. I guess it's late in the season since there's almost no one else...

Sep 10, 2017 - Lake Superior-Unsalted and No Sharks

We left Sault Ste. Marie and drove approximately 122 miles to Munising, a small town in the middle of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The name for the city comes from the Ojibwe word for “island at” because Grand Island is just off shore from the town. We camped at good campground right on Lake Superior; Tourist Campground has spacious spots and was the perfect place to explore the area. Lake Superior looks more like an ocean than a lake. It is 350 miles across at its widest, and about 1,300 feet deep at its deepest spot, which is about 35...

Aug 2, 2017 - Munising

Words cannot describe the beauty of picture rocks. They were unlike anything we had seen before. The boat ride on Lake Superior was amazing. Our campground is on a pretty little lake. The weather really cooled off and probably will remain in the 60's for a couple of days. Janet

Oct 4, 2016 - A gourmand's nightmare

Munising, MI Munising has a population of only 2300 so there are not many choices of places to eat. In addition to checking out waterfalls and attending Farmer’s Markets, we have been trying out a few of the local restaurants. Muldoons Pasties & Gift Shop is known for their award-winning (U.P. People's Choice Award) traditional Cornish pasty. We have had better – and bigger. Dogpatch Restaurant’s décor is based on Li'l Abner and Dogpatch USA. Over-sized Al Capp characters adorned the wall -- that was the best thing about this establishment....

Oct 3, 2016 - Pictured Rocks Revisited

Munising, MI Yesterday we viewed Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore via boat. Today we did it by car. Boat is much more efficient. We made it to Miner’s Castle after stopping at Sand Point on decent roads. After that we spent some time bouncing down rutted, narrow, wash-boarded lanes. Pictured Rocks is meant to be experienced via a boat, leaving the rest a back packer’s paradise. We made a stop at the Log Slide. From the Log Slide Overlook we could see Au Sable Lighthouse and the Grand Sable Banks and Dunes. Created by glacial melt, the...
