Sep 8, 2020 - Boothill Museum

We experienced 48 mile and hour wind gusts, sustained wind 30 mph. This is the prairie and a cold front came through. The high was at midnight, we are running heat in the Eagle. Misty rain today. Quite a contrast. We went to the museum because it's inside mainly - went through the shops in the recreated town and up to the cemetery hill. The museum was built in front of the storefronts to help preserve them. Then went to the Harvey House replica that is in the train depot and learned about how Fred Harvey revolutionized train travel...

2020 Trip

Sep 7, 2020 - Trolley tour

This is the last day of the trolley tour of town and it was just great. Gave us history of the town and pointed out important sites. We saw the exterior of Fort Dodge. It's now a retirement home for vets and because of Covid the trolley couldn't even get in. Would have been very interesting to see as there were old buildings there. We did see the large feedlot, Texas longhorns, learned about Wyatt Earp and of course the TV show Gunsmoke. Actually saw the boothill cemetery and the name is because there were so many shootings they had no time...

2020 Trip

Sep 6, 2020 - Dodge City

We made it to Dodge City but the drive was very windy and through Kansas open spaces. The KOA is unusual in that there is almost never anyone in the office and they take care of it at the Holiday Inn. Someone was there just as we arrived and we are on a nice long concrete pad, nice and wide. They are having a hard time with help due to Covid. There is a large water park next to the campground that is closed but this would be a busy place another year. We drove down Trail Street to get to the park.

Sep 16, 2019 - Dodge City, Kansas

Traveling Hwy. 50 from Lamar to arrived in Dodge City, Kansas where we stayed at Dodge City KOA which is a brand new KOA. All concrete pads and roadways and plenty of space between rigs. Dodge City was a spot that Dale wanted to visit and so glad we did. This is the city, after Abilene, KS, where the cowboys from Texas drove their cattle to market. We saw what we called feed lot after feed lot of cattle now. Here they are called feed yards, but whatever you want to call them there are thousands of head of cattle here. Two national beef...

Fall 2019

Aug 6, 2019 - Gunsmoke RV Park (7/30 - 8/1/19)

Well we are in another new state. We have also gotten back into the humid heat. This is a very nice park and we have a great site, #96, right on the end. We have full hook-ups and will have to run both A/Cs to stay cool! Our first evening there we drove into town and had dinner at Casey's Cowtown Restaurant. Kansas is a huge beef producer. We each had steak and I would have to say that my ribeye was one of the top 5 (maybe top 2) steaks I've had in my life!! It was absolutely delicious!! I could eat there 3 times a week!! If you are ever in...

May 9, 2019 - Flood

After a rainy night, we left Clayton. Unknown to us, I had left a bottle of water upright on the counter. 200 miles later I found that it had fallen over, striking the hot water sink faucet in kitchen area, allowing ALL of our tanked water stores to empty into the sink and over splashing the counter. There was much wetness because I had left the water pump switch in an on position. It works on demand and the struck faucet issued that command. The grey water tank overfilled (was not empty as we had not dumped when leaving Clayton) and...

Apr 9, 2019 - Yes Dorothy, we are in Kansas

We developed problems with our GPS, over the past few days so we decided we were going to call up tech support when we got up. Well the call turned into a 5 1/2 hour waiting game that didn't, in the end, fix the GPS. By this point it was too late to move on so we decided to stay the second day at the horse hotel and Mike worked to fix the GPS on his own. The Good news was that by 3pm Mike had the GPS working again and he began to reload all our data back into it... and by 3:30 Mike loading the last data file, the one for all the Walmart's...

Winter In Phoenix

Jul 7, 2018 - Dodge City, KS.

Another long day driving. We got to witness another 5th wheel accident in Saline KS. That makes 3 on this trip. We were at a gas station when at least a 40 foot 5th wheel pulled in and cut for the pumps and tried to take out a station sign. The sign won! We have been in Dodge City before with Ava's brothers, so we made an effort to return for her. We are in a RV park outside of town called Gunsmoke. It is much nicer than the one we stayed in here before. It was in town and full of Windmill generator installers. Went into town for the town...

Apr 19, 2018 - Thursday Dodge City KS

We will spend the day here to rest after the long drive yesterday and take in the tourist stuff. The campground was great but we did not realize that Dodge City tourist attractions do not open until May 30th each year, so there wasn’t much to see. You could tell it was a cow town, National Beef Dodge City employs approximately 2,900 employees and is one of the highest volume beef processing facilities in the country. The aroma drifts thru the entire area because they have huge cow pens waiting to become hamburger. Maybe someday we will...

2018 Winter

Apr 18, 2018 - Wednesday Dodge City KS

We decided to travel along US 50 from Pueblo CO to St Louis MO. It gets tiring to travel the E-ways all the time so we do the back roads. As we leave the Rocky Mountains of Colorado Springs. The landscape starts to change from mountains to flat lands. As we traveled south on I-25 to US 50 that will lead us east the area is experiencing wildfires along the way. The area has been very dry and the winds are blowing 20 to 30 miles per hour. As you travel along the side roads you past thru small towns with big histories. Rocky Ford is one of...

Aug 29, 2017 - A Travel Day - Dodge City, KS

/// Gunsmoke RVPark Dodge City, KS Tuesday - August 29, 2017 A Travel Day: With a haul of just over 300 miles today, we packed up and hitched up the FORD F-350 SUPER DUTY the night before. We departed the Doniphan KOA just after 7:00 A.M. Our route today would take us west on I-80 to just west of Kearny, NE. We have been doing our best to avoid traveling on Interstate Highways this summer, however I found I-80 to be in exceptionally good condition and traveled further west than originally planned. At the Jct of US 283 we turned south and...

Oct 3, 2016 - Dodge City, KS - Gunsmoke RV Park

Our trip from Oakley to Dodge City, KS was another 139 miles of Kansas farm land. It did seem there was more sorghum than corn on this trip. There really wasn't much else to see on the trip - just lots of farmland and cows. We are staying at the Gunsmoke RV Park which has a large section in the back with long, 50 amp, full hookup pull-throughs that are wider than usual and easy to get into and out of. The sites used to be side-by-side hookups with your neighbor sharing the utility area but now they have closed all of those opposing sites,...
