Sep 9, 2016 - The Heartland

2016-09-09 – The Heartland The past three days have found us traveling 950 miles to have dinner with our friends Nancy and Tim Okal in Chicago. We have crossed into the heartland of America across vast plains of corn and soybeans. The soaring spires of the grain silos, cathedrals of the plains, lift their bounty toward the skies as though in thanks to the God that blessed the crops. From West Virginia to Muncie, Indiana to Joliet, Illionois, the topography changed from mountains to flat fields across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. We traveled...

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL THE MOMS OUT THERE!! After our third night (a very rainy one for which flood warnings had been issued for the area) at Hickory Hollow, it was time to pull stakes and head west. Illinois has been one of 5 states in which we have not “RVed in” yet. We had traveled through countless times but had never stayed overnight in an RV. Our rule is a minimum of two nights and we must do and/or find something unique in the area. Well, we accomplished that! And, to celebrate, Ginger has a new bead! For you newer readers – for...

Mon, 26 May (Memorial Day 2014): A day to remember and honor those who paid the ultimate price so our flag can fly free... We had a comparatively quiet nite at the Muscatine Iowa Wal*Mart. "Comparatively" is always the operative word as overnite Wal*Mart stays can range from somewhat restful to utter insanity. We were just a few hundred feet from a US highway, but the traffic noise wasn't too bad. A major rain squall passed thru during the nite, but we slept thru most of it. We awoke to a partly sunny morning and, not having to rush...

May 25, 2014 - Muscatine, IA

Sun, 25 May: Another good day's run... Today was another road day. We had originally planned to drive the 450 miles from Branson to Moscow in three days, but as things worked out it'll be two long days and one short day. We departed the Fulton, MO WalMart at 0825 and backtracked on US 54 Business to US 54. As expected on a holiday weekend Sunday morning, traffic was very light. We passed thru Mexico Missouri and then picked up state route 19 north to US 61 north. US 61 took us thru Hannibal (no we did not see Shoeless Joe or Mark Twain)....

Nov 2, 2012 - On the banks of the Mississippi River

Even though the date on this journal says it's the 2nd, I am way behind and trying to reconstruct what happened on that date as it is now the 11th. For some reason, my journaling responsibilities are really lagging; I must improve, lest I lose all of you wonderful readers. Part of the lack of writer enthusiasm is that we are really anxious to be getting to the warmth, but our motorhome continues to suggest "just one more repair" before we start heading south in earnest. I know there are some of you wondering why we don't just get the...

Dream On

Jun 12, 2012 - The Pearl of the Mississippi

No visit to Muscatine, Iowa would be complete without a stop in the local museum dedicated to the history of the pearl button industry. Everywhere you look, you see the heritage of the men and women who made their livelihood along the Mississippi, River. Shell buttons had been something that only the very wealthy had on their clothing. With the development of the local mussel, everyone could afford shell buttons. The citizens of Muscatine were employed by several button factories. During the summer months, families would camp along the...

Apr 26, 2010 - Muscatine, Iowa

We didn't have far to go today, and we arrived in Muscatine by 1:00 or so. We will stay at Shady Creek Campground which is a Corp of Engineer property right on the Mississippi River, also just down the road from Sara and Todd. The rate is just $11 per night, we have 50amp electric and water hookups. We plan on staying for four nights so we will have plenty of time to catch up with both Sara and Judi and their families. While we were in Muscatine, we made a trip to Iowa City for Rick to see a dentist, he broke a tooth while eating a popcorn...

Oct 18, 2006 - On to Moscow (Iowa)

Today we are traveling to Moscow, Iowa. We were out of the campground by 8 am, a bit concerned about how the expressway would be after hearing horror stories from another RVer last night, but it was alright until we got near Chicago when heavy truck traffic plus construction bogged it down. We stopped for fuel (where the attendant called Mike 'honey' and told him he was an exception, most customers had to pay before pumping, but with his 'bad-ass' motorhome she knew he would pay)! Once past Chicago it was fairly clear sailing, with...

Aug 16, 2005 - Moscow, Iowa

Moscow, Iowa Moscow is the home of HWH, the maker of our leveling system. They also made the system that powers our slide-out. We stop here for a checkup. I was not sure the systems were operating properly. Everything checks OK; it was operator error on my part. This is a short stop and we are back on the road east! The drive along the Mississippi was beautiful.
