Jul 13, 2018 - Traffic
Today was a terrible travel day. Our intention was to skirt Chicago to the west to avoid the traffic and construction that is continuous in the Chicagoland area. The only problem with the plan was in the execution. While traveling north on US 41 in Indiana, I missed a turnoff for US 52 and before I realized it I was near Hammond, IN, too far north to avoid Chicago without going backwards. We chose to use I294 to cut up the middle of the Chicago suburbs. What a mistake. We caught Friday afternoon traffic. It was bumper to bumper crawl for at...Jump to full entry
Jul 18, 2017 - Zion IL
The trip from Madison to Zion went surprisingly well and we were set up in our site at the Illinois Beach State Park without too much difficulty. After some research we picked a very well-reviewed pizza place about 30 minutes back north in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Which took us just shy of an hour thanks to quite a few roads in the area that had been closed due to flooding from heavy rains earlier in the week. But the delay only made us hungrier and since the food was good, it was worth it. Saturday we headed south toward Chicago and after a...Jump to full entry
Jun 11, 2010 - It Takes All Kinds
We moved out to Illinois Beach on Thursday so we can have a space for Adam and Laura to bring their tent. We had reserved a handicapped spot so we knew we could get 50 amp and also had checked it out before for satellite signal. We knew that because of the trees, we would have to pull in to the site to get satellite rather than back in. We still can pull in the HD signal, but one can live without that. The driver's side of the coach (since we pulled in) has a small amount of lawn, but it is also a drive and walkway to the camp restroom. As...Jump to full entry
May 7, 2010 - We Got the Power!
From Springfield, we drove to Joliet to cut our daily mileage down for the day we drive through the Chicago area. It's bad enough in a car, don't need the extra hassle when driving 50 feet of train. We were going to stay at a Passport America park but read on the RV Park reviews that construction had made the drive in to that park somewhat challenging, so we stayed at the RV Park at the Empress Casino. Not too impressed, doubt we'll stay again. First there was no one at the office, we had to check in at the hotel. We decided to pull into a...Jump to full entry
May 28, 2008 - Chicago and Zion, Illinois
We traveled to the Chicago area May 28th to visit our son Ward. We selected a new campground this trip, Illinois Beach State Park in Zion, Illinois. It is way north of Chicago, almost to the Wisconsin border. However one of the METRA commuter train lines passes only a short drive from the campground. One of the stops on this line is in Ward’s neighborhood. So we could ride the train and either stop to go to Ward’s apartment, or he could hop on the train to join us to go downtown to one of the museums. The train rides were long, about 1½...Jump to full entry
Oct 1, 2007 - Caveman is on tomorrow!
Boy, it has been a loooonnnnngggg time since I updated this blog. We've been at Illinois Beach since Sept 17th - finally hitting the road after being at Paul Wolff for almost a month. Buffalo Park is not going to reopen this season, possibly not ever to overnight campers as the damage from the flooding this time was the worst they had ever had. We figured our days as a camp host were numbered since we only worked two days in between floods. We actually "subbed" for the Paul Wolff camp host for the first two weeks in September as he wanted...Jump to full entry
