Feb 26, 2016 - Flying to Nepal

Breakfast at the hotel was fair. That's what expect at these hotels in the USA. Faux news blaring their propaganda. I wonder why Fox News is the news of motels. The international terminal (5) was not very busy. We moved through all our lines fairly quickly. Currently we are about 5 hours into our flight as we pass over the Northern mid Atlantic ocean. We are flying with Etihad airlines. Overall the seats seem somewhat smaller, but Pam and I lucked out and have empty seat between us in a 3 person row. We are able stretch out more,...

Sep 30, 2015 - Amanda Dunne Acevedo

Scott's daughter Amanda treated us to an evening of theater tonight. We saw FUNNYMAN with Tim Kazurinsky (he was in the cast of Saturday Night Live) and George Wendt (he played Norm on Cheers) at Northlight Theater. Amanda is the Education Director of Northlight. It was great to see Amanda again since the last time was more than 2 years ago at her wedding in Chicago. Her husband Chris Acevedo was rehearsing for a play and couldn't join us.

Jun 18, 2015 - Wait! Wait!

Thursday June 18, 2015 Chicago, Indiana Dunes State Park and Lakeshore We are here in Chicago today because of the taping of the NPR show “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me”. We have been to a couple of tapings before, and it is one of our favorite shows on the radio. Mary-Jeanine tried to get tickets to the taping months ago, but it was sold out. So, we are crossing our fingers and praying for intercession from the Saint of Standby Tickets (St. Otis I think), and going into town. We are going to face some mild obstacles. Hundreds of thousands of...

Jun 17, 2015 - Chicago in the Rain

Wednesday June 17, 2015 Chicago, Indiana Dunes State Park and Lakeshore Today we are off to Chicago. Quickly, pack up our back packs, make a lunch, get ready for rain, and head off to the train station which is just outside the park. We inconveniently take a left turn when we should take a right turn. After seeing miles of steel plant, we give up and head home. Sure enough, the train station sits there just on the other side of our fateful left turn, mocking us. But, it is OK. We are on vacation. We prepare again at a leisurely pace and are...

Jun 9, 2015 - A side trip to Chicago

6-9-15 Side trip to Chicago Today we took a side trip to Oak Park near Chicago from Muncie. This side trip is 240 miles (one way), about 4 hours travel time. Because we do not want to drive the Winnebago anywhere near Chicago (thanks to our big city experience in New York) we decided to overnight in an actual hotel room. The reason for our trip to the area is to visit Bob’s aunt and a couple of cousins. We had planned to visit with Aunt Marie at noon and the cousins later in the day. We took Aunt Marie and her caretaker Chris to lunch at...

May 17, 2015 - Sweet Home Chicago!

Final Thoughts: Mike's lederhosen days have past. Michael & Andrew's had their lederhosen moment. So, Gregor, the little German Bear, agreed to come home with us in lederhosen to carry on the Gerhardstein lederhosen tradition. Germany is rich in traditions.

Apr 11, 2015 - Coralville to Chicago

Arrived in Chicago safely at noon. Colin was home to greet me and it was wonderful to see him again. I plan to be here until Friday and will post again when I get to Detroit. I had to be very flexible on this drive from Arizona. My plans to visit Rocky Mountain National Park had to change , spent much less time at the Golden Spike Tower because visibility was so bad, and had to spend an extra night on the road due to the terrible snow storm between North Platte and Kearney. As I drove through Iowa I began to realize how much I had see in...

Sep 16, 2014 - Honey's, We're Home

Pat & I flew out of Shannon Airport on Monday, after clearing customs there & shopping a bit at the Duty Free shop. Our flight was smooth & early! The only glitch was that half of the plane's movie screens froze about 15 minutes into our movies. Boo Hiss. Thus, we had no alternate entertainment for nearly 7 hrs. So we tried to doze & read & pass the time. After Pat headed back to the lake, Mike & I went into town for a bite after I unpacked & did some laundry. By now, Hunter is one happy dog in Fontana, Wisconsin with his mom back home! I...

Sep 15, 2014 - Wrigley Field

Wrigley Field! Finally! I have always wanted to see Wrigley and it did not disappoint me. The park shows its age, but carries it well. The recently installed lights were designed to look dated and fit right in with the ambience of this old gem. We got to the park on the EL just before game time, bought some OVERpriced popcorn and a couple of Chicago dogs, and landed in our seats just after the anthem. I found myself wondering if the ivy on the outfield wall is replanted every year, or if it just continues to grow from the original starts...

Sep 13, 2014 - US Cellular Field Chicago

I really want to call this Kaminsky Park - I really do. It is built within pitching distance of the site of the old field. This new business of commercializing the parks with corporate names that change evry time a sponsor's stock drops irritates me. (climbing off soapbox now...) US Cellular Field is South of chicago, so we took the train and the subway - a very easy, but long, ride into the city of Chicago. The walk from the Metra line to the State Street subway entrance is outstanding! The city of Chicago is not to be underestimated. It...
