May 18, 2019 - Route 66 in Illinois

We woke up around 6:00 a.m. it was not a restful night sleep for me, the people above us on 2nd floor were doing a lot of moving around about 2:30 it sounded like they were moving furniture (I will just let your imagination go wild), we heard some guy talking outside about the same time, I woke up around 6 got up and left around 7:00 heading up I-65 to downtown Chicago, we passed Wrigley Field and Soldier Field on the way into the city, found the Route 66 sign had to circle the block twice since we missed the sign the first time, but we got...

Apr 30, 2018 - New Journey begins

Hello Friends. Life throws so many changes at one time it's hard to keep up with everything. Candy and I have had so many changes in the last few years. We are moving from Illinois and heading to Nebraska to be closer to family. Candy has accepted a job where she grew up! We are excited to see where this journey will take us. It's amazing how God works. We have been saving for years to purchase an RV to travel full time upon retirement. What we didn't realize was we were actually saving to move closer to what we will call HOME. We have...

Jun 17, 2017 - It's A Bitter Sweet Day

Today is a very bitter sweet day for us in the Newton house. We sold our 2008 Starcraft camper! The new owners are coming today to pick it up. While, I knew this day would come... We have been both looking forward to it and dreading it all at the same time. We bought this beauty in 2012, hoping to enjoy MANY weekends of camping while we are still working and preparing for the full time lifestyle. However, life gets in the way of plans. We have only been able to take it out and enjoy it a few times (maybe 5 at most). My job changed, days...

May 9, 2017 - Planning stages

It has been almost 2 years since I have posted. The planning and preparing has been taxing, educating and fun all at the same time.We started truly planning to full time (now) 7 years ago. Of course as time has gone by our ideas and thoughts have changed. I am sure by the time we truly retire things will change again and be different than they are now. Candy turned 50 in October. After much research, we disappointingly discovered she has to work until she is 60. If Candy leaves the Post Office to retire early, it is really to much of a...

Sep 24, 2016 - Day 21, Saturday, Sept. 24

So--a little back tracking today, well worth it. It doesn't come without a price. No day of rest tomorrow.Today we took the old route 66 back to Pontiac and visited the Museum complex that included: A Illinois Route 66 museum, A civil war songs museum, a 40's reconstructed living area, art inspired by Route 66 and of course a gift store. Pontiac has a large selection of child size cars scattered around the city. I got a picture of a couple of them. While much of Route 66 is in serious disrepair, some towns have repaved half of the route...

Sep 23, 2016 - Day 20, Friday Sept 23

We started the first day of our Route 66 Adventure, and that is exactly what it is. For the majority of our trip today we were able to travel on Old Highway 66, for some of the trip the old road ran next to the newer Highway 66. The Old highway is too over grown for automobile use. Our first stop was in Willowbrook, Il at Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket. Rosalea ordered Chicken and Dumplings and I ordered the Chicken Fingers basket. I did share mine with Rosalea. The food was good, the chicken very tender and seasoned just right, however Rosalea...

May 22, 2015 - Baby Steps

It has been almost a year since I have been able to write anything here. We have been very busy reading, researching, talking to others, asking questions and communicating between ourselves. Planning on going RVing full time can be work. There is so much to keep in mind when doing so. Do you sell the house or keep it? Do you sell everything you can not take or put some in storage if you decide to sell? What do you keep, sell, donate or pass on to family? What about your health insurance when you are no longer working and not old enough for...

May 23, 2014 - Bloomington-Normal

We ventured into Bloomongton-Normal today in search of a couple Route 66 attractions, what we found quite by accident was the McClean County Museum of History. It’s housed in the old McClean County Court House, completed in 1903 in the American Renaissance style. It served as a courthouse until 1976 and was renovated between 1989 and 1991 and converted to a museum to house the artifacts collected by the McClean County Historical Society. The Society has been around since 1892. The museum's collection documents the growth and development of...

(Sandi writing) We sort of back tracked two hours west to get to see where the Clydesdales are bred...the tour was worth the trip. We then headed Northeast from Columbia, MO and are here in Bloomington, Il. We enjoyed taking several small highways, passing miles and miles of farms growing maze and soybeans.

Jul 9, 2013 - Trouble on the Road

A great travel day for 500 miles. The good news is we almost made it. The bad news is that we had a blowout on the fifth wheel. We limped into marker 149 to the rest area. It was closed for repair...We met two friends Ron, the truck driver, who had a blowout and Mike, roadside assistance, who saved us on I-55. AAA sent Mike with a tire and a spare that we now carry. We made in Utica, Illinois by 9PM. LONG DAY

Aug 25, 2012 - Bloomington, Ill

We have decided to stop here in Bloomington, Ill instead of going on to Peru. We are both a little tired from our ordeal last night. I did not mention this this morning, because we wanted to notify all by phone or email, we had to put cookie to sleep yesterday evening late. She has been frail the last several weeks with several ailments. However, the last couple of days we noticed she was having difficulty breathing. Took her to the emergency Vet Anderson and they took an X-ray and did and exam and found she had CHF. He tried to revive her...
