Feb 7, 2020 - Wind, Rain, and Tornado Warnings

We’ve moved on down to the Georgia coast and will be staying at Crooked River State Park in St. Marys for the next 5 days. It’s located just north of the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. The trip from North Carolina over the last couple of days was interesting. We spent last night outside of Charleston, SC. We pulled into Oak Plantation RV Campground a little after dark. It was a nice warm night, but it wasn’t long before things changed. The storm that has been moving across the southern states the last day or so reached the coast and hadn’t...

Oct 22, 2018 - Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base

We arrived at the Naval Submarine base, Kings Bay near the town of St. Mary's, Georgia after a 180 mile drive. We quickly set up in our space, B-5. Our first walk around this RV park showed to us that there was a variety of walking trails. Dave was anxious to fish in that yummy lake. This RV park is on base and consists of 50 spaces and a nice community buildin We found out through the staff that there are essentially two St. Mary's. One is the historic one which is billed as the second oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, FL...

Mar 8, 2016 - Coastal Georgia

Tuesday morning we left Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and drove to the Jacksonville North/St. Marys KOA. Our route dropped into Florida for about 10 miles before reentering Georgia into the little appendix that is formed by the St. Marys River. We'll be at the KOA for the next 5 or 6 days. I'll be going to the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance on Sunday. In its third decade, the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance is one of the top automotive events in the world. It draws over 250 rare vehicles from collections around the world that are...

May 5, 2015 - Crooked River State Park, GA

Crooked River State Park, Georgia, is a totally pristine, well-maintained park. So well maintained that every day, the campground volunteers run around in their golf carts removing pine cones from the grounds. The only issue was that I wanted to run out with a can of WD40 every time the guy came near with his little squeaky trailer.... There wasn't a bad spot in the entire camp, but we learned an irritating lesson : if there is a tag on the campsite - even if there is no equipment there, find another site. After we had been in site eleven...

Feb 25, 2015 - Saint Marys, Georgia

Last night we stayed at the Walmart in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where it was still winter. This morning, we were up and the road, following Interstate 95 South. By mid-afternoon, I was starting to wonder about a spot for the night, called my friend Steve Weaver in Sunny Southern California, and asked him to check on the Walmart in St. Marys, Georgia. "They don't allow overnight", Steve said, "but there is a comment on AllStays.com from a fellow who said he asked anyway and they said "yes". So, as I drove, Hazel called the store and...

Jan 22, 2015 - Cumberland Island

We went to St. Marys, GA today to catch the ferry to Cumberland Island, the largest of the Golden Isles of Georgia. Cumberland Island was designated a National Seashore in 1972. The national Park Service limits the number of visitors to the island through the use of the ferry. There are only limited runs daily and this time of the year there are none on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you want to camp, you have to bring everything with you and take it all off the island when you leave. There is one camping area with running water and bathrooms...

Dec 26, 2013 - Are we there yet?

We didn’t even make it to the end of our driveway when Denise blasted; “Are we there yet?” I think she is ready for some warm weather. I know I am. It was 23 degrees outside this morning. It’s cold enough for anyone to wish they were in Florida right now. Inside the RV, it was nice and toasty. I turned on the furnace the night before thinking that it would take a few hours to warm this big thing up to a comfortable temperature. I’m glad I did. We left before dawn thinking that we would get a good start. Apparently, so did everyone else...

May 5, 2013 - St Mary's, GA

We left the Lock right on time last Friday...right at ten AM. Up Ronald Reagan Turnpike to Gainesville, just short of 300 miles. Went there to see grand niece Heather graduate from UF. Lots of traffic accidents as we approached the city on I75. Total count of smashed cars was over 25. Drove to the lot we had been instructed to use by the University Police and there was no room for us...backtracked to a Walmart we saw as we came into town. However, Pathfinder was concerned that this particular Wally World was in Indian Territory, so at 11PM...

Nov 5, 2012 - Cumberland Island, Georgia

Saturday night we arrived at Crooked River State Park in St Mary's Georgia...right on the border with Florida. This is a big, wonderful park. By the time we were set up it was too late to do anything but take a short walk and make something to eat. Sunday morning we got up early and headed to St Mary's to catch the boat to Cumberland Island. We thought we were running a little late so we rushed to town, parked and hustled into the Visitor Center to buy our tickets......we were an hour early....we had forgotten Daylight Savings Time ended...

Oct 19, 2012 - Cumberland Island

We left Tammy and Bitsy at Mugu's for their play time and a bath. When we left they were running into a room with a sofa and stuffed chairs with blankets and a bunch of other little dogs. We had breakfast at the Cedar Tree Cafe. The cafe is tiny and across a side hall from a nice art gallery. Several of the customers looked like retirees that meet there regularly for coffee and tall tales. We arrived at the headquarters building for a short orientation about hiking and camping on Cumberland. There were many people carrying camping...
