Oct 8, 2017 - Can it get too hot?

As we near our destination, we are beginning to get excited. After some light rain over night we got up to sun peaking through the clouds... and it was a warm, very muggy 77F. One of Michelle's activities is to take pictures of the sign welcoming us into each province and state, well, as we pulled off the interstate yesterday and when we pulled back on today... we missed the sign since the campground was on the border line of North and South Carolina. Now we did get a picture of the sign thanking us for visiting as we exited later in the...

May 12, 2017 - Day 1 JAX to Kingsland 55 miles

Great early start and beautiful ride our of Jacksonville with wind at our backs and cool temps. Fun ride on Mayport ferry (only $1 each!) Mayport is a very cute town with shrimp boats at the dock. Up the coast to Amelia Island. Listening to Pandora, didn't realize Google maps shut off on my phone and we missed the turn west. That resulted in a harrowing ride through heavy traffic and no bike lane. Because of the huge MIMS fire in Georgia we had to keep east of our planned route. Heavy smoke on most of the ride once we left the coast. Then...

LUCKY 58

May 1, 2017 - Leaving

Up this morning early. Finished packing the truck with stuff we have to take home and shut down the fifth wheel. The neighbours dropped by to say good bye and we hooked up and left. Took about 20 minutes to drive to our storage site. Signed the papers and put the fifth wheel in our spot. Hooked up the electric, set the thermostat to 82 and hit the road. By now it was 11:45. We don't do things very quickly any longer. Had hoped to make it as far as Savannah tonight but fell a couple of hours short. Stayed in Kingsland, Georgia which is just...

May 23, 2016 - Movin' on Up the Road to Georgia

We had a very leisurely morning - didn't pull out of the Elk Lodge in St. Augustine until almost 11:00. Then we didn't get far before we were stopped at the draw bridge for several sailboats to pass thru. That was a nice farewell to St. Augustine! We bypassed Jacksonville but did pass the Port of Jacksonville where we saw lots of activity. There were lots of containers stacked up in the port but most of the ships we saw were the type that carry cars. We barely got into Georgia before we stopped for the nite. We got off on Exit 1 in...

May 17, 2016 - Kingsland, GA

Tue, 17 May: Carpes finally leave The Sunshine State. We arrived in Florida late February and today we finally left the state with our vehicles. Obviously, we'd left the state aboard the cruise ship, but the two Carpes were taking an extended Florida holiday. We left the Crystal Lake Campground at 0939 and were back on I 95 northbound in no time. Sandi headed us north thru some populated areas such as Daytona Beach and the Kennedy Space Center areas of Titusville et. al. At the southern part of Jacksonville we took the I 295 east bypass to...

2016 Travels

Apr 30, 2016 - Boring

So we begin our trek north, but in short segments for now. I had it in my mind that there were some outlets near the Jacksonville Airport, and since Buzz desperately needed some new shoes and there were a couple of things I wanted, that seemed like a good place to stop. Luckily we called ahead for a reservation because the place we had planned to stay was full. We ended up at a “park” not too far away, but basically a parking area behind an EconoLodge with full hookups. It is fine for a one night stay. So we headed out for the Outlets,...

Nov 11, 2015 - Kiki's RV Park, Kingsland, GA

We day two of the adventure, while leaving New Green Acres, I tried to miss a deep pot hole and inadvertently the left tires of the 5th wheel went into a ditch, the left rear jack was bent badly. Decided to leave it along until we could get somewhere to get is fixed. Went onto Kingsland GA, we went to Applebees for late lunch, they had a table in the entry area for our fallen veterans, what a great tribute. We had a free lunch, I had double crunchy shrimp, well they were large gulf shrimp and there were 25 of them, I made a circle on the...

Jan 19, 2015 - Moving On

Thanks to Nancy and Hutch for a great weekend. We always enjoy visiting to catch up and see what's new on Fripp Island. By the way, I found the keys for the Fit. They were laying in the grass where I was taking pictures of the shrimp boats. No trip to the Honda dealer needed. Hunting Island State Park is a nice campground. Nights are really dark with not a lot of stray light from civilization. I experimented with some star tracks and they are improved over others that I've done, but still not as good as I've seen by others. I'll have to...

May 19, 2014 - Titusville, FL to Kingsland, GA

May 19, 2014 Had a very lazy morning with Bob reading the NYT and my writing the journal, preparing marinades for dinner etc. Finally got on the road about 10:30. The drive to St Augustine was about 2 hours on Hwy 95. Ponce de Leon claimed the region for Spain in 1513. St. Augustine is the oldest (1565), continuously occupied European settlement in the US. It served as the capital of Spanish Florida for 200 years. In 1822 Spain ceded St. Augustine to the US. and it became the capital of the Florida Territory until it was moved to...

May 11, 2014 - A soggy week in Tallahassee and HOT in Georgia

While we were in Milton we ran across an older looking Bounder at a nearby RV Dealer, well you know we just had to stop and check it out. As soon as we opened the door we recognized the interior décor, it was the same as our new motor home and we realized that it was the same year as ours, a 1995. That is where the similarity ended. The one that was for sale was 2 feet shorter than ours, so more cramped, it had 17,000 more miles on it and the asking price was about $6,000 more than what we paid for ours. It had the original carpet and...
