Aug 16, 2019 - Lake Lanier

14 August, Wednesday Left home about 9 AM drove a hot unpleasant 370 miles to Army Corp; Old Federal Camp Ground. It is located next to Flowery Branch, GA. Set up camp and then heated up some left overs. Enjoyed them while sitting outside under the awning with a light rain. 15 August finished setting up camp, then waited for Barb to come out from Atlanta. 16 August first stop Bobby Daltons to see why the check engine light was staying on, it turned out to be an easy fix, a $39 gas cap. Then it was off to meet friends from the Sautee...

Jun 19, 2013 - We've got a winner!

Old Federal Corps of Engineer Campground, Lake Lanier, GA June 18 & 19 We arrived here mid afternoon on Tuesday, the 18th. Skies were threatening rain and we’d had sprinkles all the way from last night’s stop at Unadilla. We actually had a nasty storm just after dinner there, with lots of wind, thunder & lightning, but we never lost power. However, our site turned into a mud puddle and it was miserable cleaning up to leave. But, our drive to Lake Lanier was good and took us about four hours with a few stops for this and that along the way....

Summer 2013 Stories

May 20, 2012 - Red on right returning

An old nautical term meaning the red buoys are on your right when returning from the ocean. Well John and I did not need that information but we saw many boaters on the lake yesterday who did not understand you travel in a port to port (left to left) when approaching another boat. This is the same way we drive on the road in the US. So either most of the boaters were from England or their seamanship is a tad off. Being a weekend there were considerably more boaters on another beautiful day. The trip was excellent and I enjoyed the ride and...

May 19, 2012 - All ashore who's going ashore

What a day. After the ballgame I stayed over at John and Elaine's house. We had breakfast then headed up to Lake Lanier to pick up Shirley at the campground for a day of boating. They have a beautiful 25' deck boat with three pontoons which rides very nicely. We tooled around on the lake for 4 hours on a chamber of commerce weather day. Lake Lanier is a man made corps of engineers lake and is quite large with islands and a ton of shoreline. We capped the day off with dinner outside at the marina restaurant. The food was excellent. Hard to...

May 18, 2012 - Be Brave

All doctor's appointments are complete and we've moved to Lake Lanier just north of Atlanta. This is another beautiful campground right on the lake and we have a super spot. Shirley set up the camper by her lonesome as my buddy John Van Camp picked me up from my appointment so we could play. She then went back to Decatur to visit with her old work mates at the VA Medical Center and stopped to see some other folks. Last night John and I went to the Braves game and what a game it was. Good guys win 7-0 and the pitcher for the Braves had a...

May 21, 2011 - What FUN!

We are still doing the boys thing while the girls are doing theirs. From what Shirley and Jeanne are saying they are having a fantastic time with their Habitat projects. We guys had just an outstanding day on the water yesterday at Lake Lanier in North GA. My buddy John VanCamp took Don and me out on his boat for the second day. Friday was an absolutely beautiful day for boating. 83 degrees, Cloudless and very light winds. What a perfect day and we were out all day. Our first destination was lunch at a little place on the lake and the food...

May 20, 2011 - Boating & Dismantling

Don and I moved on to Old Federal Campground on Lake Lanier in North GA. My buddy John VanCamp got us an outstanding site on a peninsula with water all around us. Yesterday we went on John's new party boat and what a boat it is. Pics tomorrow of the boat and lake. We came back and had a bar b que and campfire. Had a very nice time. Today more boating and finally swimming! Looks to be a beauty on the lake. I told the guys for a boys lake weekend I really think my father would love this. He would fit right in and might even help us drink the...

May 19, 2011 - Finally...on a Habitat Women Build!

From the Distaff Side: Jeanne & I arrived to the site of the Habitat Women Build in Rome, GA "bright eyed" & "bushy tailed" at 8 am. We were immediately put to work setting up painting work areas outside for trim, door frames and doors. We had a crew of 8 volunteers including the "to-be" homeowners. It was nice to be outdoors. A beautiful sunny day helped to facilitate the paint drying...but there were times in the afternoon we all wished for more shade. All of us worked hard and completed 95% of the painting. Unfortunately, we ran out of...

Aug 27, 2010 - Chateau Elan, Braselton, Georgia

Chateau Elan is a winery in Braselton Georgia. It's the largest winery in Georgia, and is located 40 miles north of Atlanta. The facility is located on 3500 acres, 50 which are dedicated to the vineyard, and also contains golf, tennis, and restaurants. Alice Ann and I took this short day trip to attend a culinary class entitled "Hawaii 5-0". The menu included Ahi Poke, which turns out to be raw tuna, pan roasted red snapper with charred pineapple, Hawaiian hearts of palm, and kafir lime juice. Alice Ann and I have learned that we can make...

Oct 27, 2009 - Old Federal COE Park, GA

Tuesday, Oct 20 thru Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009 We arrived at Old Federal COE Park on Lake Lanier early afternoon, got set up and headed to Duluth to meet Heather and her boss for dinner at the Olive Garden. We certainly enjoyed our visit after not seeing her since Dec 2007. We’re looking forward to spending more time with her and her whole family in just a few more weeks. The park here is beautiful - large, spacious, well-tended sites, and for this park at least (there are 7 COE parks on this lake) where there are 83 sites, only two are not...

Jun 28, 2008 - Lake Lanier, GA

This was the best accommodation and the best hosts of the trip -- hands down! We won't give you a web site, phone number or address because we want to keep this one for ourselves. We bonded with our cousins, Ace and Judy Hagebak, while planning for and attending a family reunion in 2002. We are kindred spirits, to say the least. When we planned this trip, we made a point of passing through the Atlanta area so we could spend some time with them. Much to our delight, they suggested staying at their houseboat on Lake Lanier. It was fabulous,...

Mar 21, 2004 - Southern Cross, Norcross, GA

Southern Cross, Norcross, GA Mar 21, 2004 We've arrived at the Corps of Engineer campground called Old Federal which is located on Lake Lanier several miles east of Atlanta in the small town of Flowery Branch. We'll be staying here while Len takes his training as a Leak Survey Technician for Southern Cross. He'll be training with a long term employee of the company here in the Atlanta area. His time will be spent in the field and back at the company headquarters in Norcross for classroom training. We both really like this campground. We...
