Jul 7, 2017 - Day 5 (final) Iron Mountain Trail part 2

Made coffee and walked down to the river to see if we could see muddy hoof prints (we could) and potentially cross the river and try and find a road and flag down someone for directions. During the mostly sleepless night we had heard vehicles and a train somewhere in the distance seemingly on the far side of the river. I walked out into the river with just my trekking poles to check the depth and current, but it was waist-deep within feet and running fast. We also also knew the river had rapids and small waterfalls and decided it was too...

Jul 6, 2017 - Day 4 Iron Mountain Trail

Started day with confidence. Left the car with a note in the windshield, let the kids know when to expect to hear from us with instructions to call rangers if they didn't, and we were armed with trail maps and detailed instructions. Had to walk on forest road about 2 miles to trailhead. Trail was muddy, and we quickly had to make our first crossing of the wide Conasauga River. Thigh high, current not too bad. Worked our way up the first mountain, then down, then up the second one. The quantity and diversity of mushrooms was amazing. Gordon...

Jul 5, 2017 - Day 3 Walmart & Sheed's Creek

Washed our wet and muddy clothes with creek water before dark last night but it rained again during the night and everything was soaked, so drove into town to laundramat to use the dryers and also charge our phones and Kindle. After trying to wear a raincoat under my pack the last 2 days decided rain tarps to go over the backpack would make more sense so shopped at the only option in the town - friggin Walmart. However, found lightweight tarps, and decided to splurge and buy fresh food to grill, plus BEER. Also bought a deck of cards for...

Jul 4, 2017 - Day 2 Emery Trail & Hickory Gap

Woke up around 6:30 and boiled water for hot tea and instant coffee to go with our granola bars. Hiked out and completed Gahunta, but managed to take the wrong trail and walk about 2 miles in the rain before realizing (my) error. "PUDs" are Pointless Ups and Downs and we wasted about an hour in the rain and mud before Gordon finally figured out how to hike back to the car! We then drove to Emery Creek in the Cahunta Wilderness to hike a 10 mile trail. Lots of local good-ole-boys and their families partying along the creek... we packed up...

This morning we left Georgia to begin our trip to Canada. Our first stop was the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. We will leave first thing in the morning headed to Essex, Ontario where we will be visiting some friends from the park where we stay in the winter in Florida.

Nov 7, 2012 - Heading Home

Beginning Mileage 36392 Ending Mileage 36600 We got an early start and drove straight through until we reached Talking Rock Creek Resort and home. We have had a long journey full of spectacular sights, interesting places and scrumptious food. We are so blessed to have seen the Jersy Shore before Hurricane Sandy destroyed it and our prayers continue to be with those suffering in that area of the country. We have now seen at least part of all of the "lower 48" states and continue to be amazed at the beauty of this country. We will continue to...
