May 16, 2015 - Andersonville Confederate Prison and Cemetery

Yesterday we drove 400 miles from Mandeville, LA, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain (north of New Orleans) to Columbus, GA, just over the state line from Auburn, AL. When we crossed into Georgia we entered the Eastern time zone so we lost an hour. Today we drove about an hour in the car to Andersonville, GA, to see the Andersonville Confederate Prison and Nat'l Cemetery. Mar 26, 2011 - Andersonville- Georgia

Wednesday we drove to Elko in Georgia (331miles ) where we camped it is 27 miles from Andersonville where we visited the Confederate Prison for Union troops, it was appalling the way they were kept, they died from disease, starvation, exposure & lack of medical care, forced marches and outright murder. The Captain that was in charge of the camp was later hanged for the way he ran the camp. Mar 3, 2010 - Andersonville National Historic Site

Our visit to Andersonville National Historic Site today was a real education in American history and one which we seldom hear about. Andersonville, Georgia was the site of a Confederate prisoner of war camp. This camp was constructed late in the war (1864) after Washington banned the practice of prisoner exchange. Built for an occupancy of about 6,000, but during the short time it was open before the end of the war, the population quickly grew to more than 30,000 at one point.
