Feb 2, 2020 - Lots of Lines

We lined up to get off the ship; we lined up to go through US immigration; we lined up to get on a bus; we lined up to get back on the bus; we lined up to go through security; we lined up to get back on the ship. Some lines moved smoothly, other were interminable. We arrived at Sort Lauderdale on time with the instructions that, due to the noro-virus we had to vacate the ship between 10 AM and 2 PM to allow the crew to sterilize the ship. A complimentary shuttle was provided to take us to a mall if we so desired. This seemed a better...

Jan 25, 2020 - Landfall Sint Maarten to Sainte Martin

We were up early this morning and had breakfast delivered to our room. We ate and got ready then waited for the announcement that the gangway was out. When it came we went down and went ashore looking for the right group for our tour. We discovered that ours appeared to be the most popular one. We were lined up and led out to buses. The driver was the guide and was very informative and at times quite funny. We drove past the salt ponds which had been the original attraction for early explorers of the Caribbean. We drove over to the French...

Jan 24, 2020 - I need Vitamin Sea

A dish in the store says it all (Photo 1) We had a generally lazy day today. We rose and got ready then went to the orange Club for breakfast. This is where we have been having dinner. Christine complained that the tea was cold and weak. A replacement was warmer but still weak. We went to see the future cruises desk but it was lined up so we went to the concierge to see if we could make an appointment. We had tried for the afternoon, but eventually got one for 7 pm. We returned to the room. I did some laundry and Christine read and dozed on...

Jan 23, 2020 - All at Sea

Today was a sea day, so we were not too early in getting up. We had breakfast in the Neptune Lounge which was a bit disappointing compared to our experience of this facility on previous cruises. There was no large table to eat at, only coffee tables and the selection of food for breakfast was very limited. We returned to our room and then had a walk around. Christine then did some laundry and we sat out side. It was warm when the sun was out, but cool when it hid behind the clouds. We went up to the Lido deck for lunch then went along to...

Jan 22, 2020 - Leaving Fort Lauderdale

We were up at our usual time this morning and had breakfast. We talked to some other guests who were going to or coming from a cruise, but none were going on the same cruise as ourselves. We checked the outside temperature and agreed that the forecast of 6 C was about right. Everyone here is complaining about the cold which, it seems, is unusual. We returned to our room and put the last minute things together then sat and read and watched others gather for the various shuttles to the dock and the airport. We could see a number of pieces of...

Jan 21, 2020 - By the Beach

We had breakfast and returned to the room where Christine proof read the newsletter and I made the corrections. It was a cool morning, though quite pleasant for us, and even with the easing of the big chill in Edmonton, much warmer than at home. We set off for Fort Lauderdale Beach and, almost by accident, parked at what turned out to be a very convenient spot. We left the car and headed north on the promenade paralleling the beach, watching the ships on the horizon, the people on the beach and those, like ourselves, strolling the sidewalk....

Jan 20, 2020 - A Shopping Day

We had breakfast and chatted to a couple from Ontario at the next table. They were happy to have left 0 temperatures which paled by comparison to ours! We got ready and set the GPS to take us to a shopping mall where a branch of Christine's favourite clothing store is located. We went through some heavy traffic and received the wrong end of a car horn when I tried to merge at one point. Otherwise the ride was uneventful. We got parked and found a mall entrance. The whole ground level is a series of parking "garages" as they call them here....

Jan 19, 2020 - Back to Fort Lauderdale

A quiet day today. We finished packing and took our cases to the car to get through the breakfast room before it was too busy then came back and had breakfast. We spoke to the girl who tended the breakfast room and discovered she was from Jamaica. When she learned about our having lived there she changed from the quiet, almost sullen person we had known over the previous days to a happy, animated girl. Quite a revelation and a lesson that first impressions should not be lasting. We collected the smaller items from our room and finished...

Jan 15, 2020 - Sunny, Warm Florida

Woke at 5:30 and got ready, checked out and waited a short while for the shuttle to take us back to the airport. We checked in and deposited our cases then went through, first the automated immigration and customs formalities, then the face to face one with a real person. Eventually we were in the departure area, having walked through the duty free zone which could have been transported from any airport in the world. They are all identical with their meandering pathway to ensure maximum temptation - which we easily resisted. We got some...

Dec 17, 2019 - Fly to Fort Lauderdale

Our day started out well. Airport transport arrived on time. No hassle checking in at airport and we were soon on our way to Houston. We had lunch and things soon started to go downhill. United announced our flight would be late to FLL due to mechanical problems with the plane. We got later and later, next announcement said they were bringing a plane from San Francisco to take us to Ft. Lauderdale. Finally, we got on our way and arrived in FLL a mere 3 hours late. Major hassle reclaiming baggage and it was pure chaos to get the hotel...

Mar 28, 2019 - Land & Air to Ft Lauderdale

It was a busy day of travel to get us from our home in Hernando to our hotel in Ft Lauderdale. Leaving home in Big Tow at 5:50 am and getting to our hotel room in Ft Lauderdale at 12:30 was quite surprising and made us question why we took 6:40 total time flying in from Orlando when we can drive it in just over 4 hours. It had something to do with a better air fare by flying into Orlando when we are returning from Rome.

Jan 18, 2019 - Fort Lauderdale

Wednesday, January 16 Up early (4:15) in the cold and dark to make our way to SeaTac for the flight to Fort Lauderdale. It was a slower trip through security with the shutdown in place, but we made it for the cross country flight. We landed in Fort Lauderdale at 5:00 pm local time, got our bags, and made our way to the car rental desk where there was no line! It is definitely different wrestling the bigger suitcase—good thing we won’t have to do that once we get on the cruise. I put the hotel address is as being in Fort Lauderdale when it...
