Mar 24, 2016 - Vallejo / San Francisco CA

We needed to get to the city early because Candy had an appointment at 11:00 am and I didn’t know how long that drive would be so we left at 8:00 am. The 33 miles this morning took us 90 minutes with the stop and go traffic. Don’t know how someone could do this every day. Her appointment was for the San Francisco Segway Tour, Advance Tour. Since she has been on Segway’s in San Antonia, twice, Naples Florida, Savannah Georgia, San Diego California, Myrtle Beach, and Cincinnati Ohio, the thought was she could do the Advance Tour. It was...

2016 Westward HO

Mar 23, 2016 - Vallejo / San Francisco CA

I waited around until around 10:00 am before we took the drive into the city, San Francisco. It wasn’t a bad drive, only took around 45 minutes to cover the 33 miles. We arrived at our destination for the day, the famous Fisherman’s Wharf. We walked around on Pier 39, which is the center piece of the area. That is where several of the shops and restaurants are located. Had to get our parking pass validated since it cost $9.00 per hour to park. After all the validating instead of paying full price of $54.00 for the 6 hours we were there, it...

Apr 12, 2014 - Across the Delta to Wine Country

We are on the last leg of our trip to California today. Our first detour was to pull off CA 99 to get a picture of the water tower in Kingsburg. The Kingsburg water tower is unusual in that it is shaped like an antique Swedish coffee pot. Last year while in Iowa on the Wild West Tour, I visited Stanton that has a similar Swedish coffee pot water tower that is accompanied by a coffee cup water tower. Sapp Brothers truck stops in Wyoming and Nebraska use coffee pot water towers as their advertising icon. Kingsburg was established as a...

Oct 5, 2012 - Vallejo & brother Michael

Today was a short drive to Vallejo, again staying at the Elks Lodge. We stopped here to visit Cheryl’s older brother Michael. Mike came over went to lunch with us, then we all went to his house to visit with his girlfriend, Pam. He lives in an old hilly neighborhood built in 1930. He showed us in his kitchen how it had been vented for a wood burning stove and the cabinet that had been the “Ice Box”. Mike drove us all to the Jelly Belly Jellybean Factory for a tour over in Fairfield. It is a bright, fun place with a guided tour from the...

Sep 7, 2011 - San Francisco

We got into Vallejo on the Wednesday the 7th - two days ahead of schedule. I didn't know how long it would take to get from Washington to San Francisco. There were no RV parks in S.F. and we knew more about Vallejo. On Thursday, spent the morning with Lawrence and Delores Inabnett and their daughter Terri. Friday we went by Lawrence's house he grew up in that was located in Vallejo and then by the Vault where Henry Inabnett, my uncle, and Mary were intered. We then went to San Francisco and took a tour of the city. We nearly froze to...

Jun 1, 2011 - Vallejo, CA

Napa Expo RV Park Mary Ann's sister, Polly, lives in Vallejo, just north of San Francisco. We've done so much since we've been here that it seems like no time at all. Mary Ann and Polly's brother, Michael, and his wife, Carolyn, came down from Oregon for the weekend. Ken built an arbor/swing in Polly's backyard with Michael's help. We had a soggy trek through the Napa Wine Trail on Saturday, but the weather has improved since then. Flowers abound out here, many that are annuals at home are perennials out here and amazing to see in their...

May 1, 2011 - Going to Muir Woods

Today was another pretty day with bright sunshine and in the low 70s. We decided to go to Muir Woods which is a small stand of Redwoods named for John Muir. The last part of the trip is a very windy and steep road off of Hwy 1. The road is prohibited to vehicles over 35 ft in length and as we wove around the steep curves, we wondered how something that long could make it. When we got to the woods, the parking lot was full as was the overflow lot we kept going and people were parked along the road as far as a mile and a half away. We decided...

Apr 30, 2011 - Out to Wine Country

We began our trip on the Sonoma side of Wine Country. We drove through acres of vineyards and through the town of Glen Ellen on to Santa Rosa. We stopped here for lunch at a Diner, Drive-in and Dive called Hank's Creekside Restaurant. It was a cute little place, nicely done inside and out. Guy told about his homemade corned beef hash so we decided on breakfast. The hash was outstanding. You could actually taste the corned beef. Bill had eggs benedict which was also good. After eating we took a mountain pass to the other side of the valley....

Apr 29, 2011 - Into San Francisco

From Vallejo you can catch a ferry into San Francisco, so today we got up early and headed for the ferry. A senior round trip is only $13 and well worth it considering the price of fuel and parking. We got a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the city on our ferry trip. When we got to the Ferry Terminal we visited the shops and restaurants that are now housed there. There is a meat store with fillets at $30/lb and a Cowgirl Creamery with delicious looking cheeses of all varieties. We spent some time at the Sur La Table store...

Apr 28, 2011 - Chores and Rest Day

We decided we needed a day to catch up finances and laundry so today was the day. We were finally able to reach Stephanie Franklin and unfortunately will be unable to get together this trip. They are busy getting ready for an exciting cruise. We spent the day doing chores and planning our route through the Redwoods in Northern California and into Oregon. It was nice to have a day to just hang out.

Apr 27, 2011 - Going to Vallejo

Beginning Mileage 113987 Ending Mileage 114162 Tradewinds RV Park 239 Lincoln Rd W Vallejo, CA 94590 707-643-4000 7/9/8 $35/nt We had a fairly easy trip down the mountain and into the valley. Just before we got to Merced, we stopped at a fruit stand in front of a strawberry field and bought some of the most delicious strawberries we have ever eaten. We continued on mostly on bumpy highways and interstates and arrived in Vallejo in the early afternoon. The park is okay but the spaces are so narrow that our slides almost touch the motor homes...
