Apr 13, 2011 - Day 9 LA area

WOW!!! What a busy day. After breakfast we departed for the 1.5 hour drive into Santa Monica. We have noticed, that there are a lot of RV sales and service places, but not that many being driven into this area. (Actually the drive wasn't nearly as bad as we had imagined and it was clear enough that we even were able to see the HOLLYWOOD sign on the side of the hill.) We arrived in Santa Monica about lunch time, but were so excited (well at least Phyl was) to see as much as we could, we decided not to eat until later. We parked the car and...

Apr 5, 2011 - A Last Hurrah

The Last Hurrah Here is some free advice. Best not to plan travel between Las Vegas and Los Angeles on a weekend. The 4 hour drive turned into 6.5 hours and there were no accidents or road works. Simply going from 3 lanes to 2 banked up the traffic for about an hour. Then it happens again when you go through the agricultural station and they weren't even stopping anyone. Mark was able to stay awake and alert because he had to, the traffic was intense for the whole time. His patience nearly gave way though and he is a patient man, except...

Mar 22, 2011 - Santa Monica

In the morning we did the Kodak Theatre tour & learned all about the Oscar Awards ceremonies. We got to walk all round inside the theatre & see behind the scenes. The interesting thing for me was how they prepared the street outside & cover up all the shop fronts inside the theatre area just for the awards ceremony. All that red carpet & curtains. After that we went next door to the Madame Tussauds waxworks exhibition which, surprisingly enough, is dedicated to the movie industry. We last went to a Madame Tussauds waxwork exhibition on our...

Mar 16, 2011 - Thrill of Traveling to the Land of the Lords of the Ring

I only had an hour to pack and get ready before leaving for the airport! Finalizing an intricate and important project had taken much longer than I had anticipated but once I got to the airport a rush of adrenaline kicked in and it felt as though I had just woken up from a good night sleep. I was adamant to change my sleeping pattern and trick my body to get sleepy on New Zealand time zone!!! Watching two movies back to back did the trick. After watching Morning Glory and Due Date, I went to sleep like a baby and woke up in the early...

Mar 3, 2011 - New Zealand: Here I come....

Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in Iranian calendar. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox, which usually occurs on March 21 or the previous/following day depending on where it is observed. In the Northern Hemisphere, where I have always lived, Nowruz occurs on the first day of SPRING. But I have NEVER celebrated Nowruz at the beginning of Fall!!! This year I am going to experience that because I will be in Auckland, New Zealand!!! You are welcome to come along, as you did during...

Mar 3, 2011 - Drove to Alanna & Tom’s

We drove to Santa Monica on the way up to the wedding and stopped off at Alanna and Tom’s new apartment. They live only 8 block from the pacific ocean. While there we gave our gift to Alanna & Tom. Tom has a Masters degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Alanna is getting her Masters TCM as well. While we were in Vancouver BC we found a Jade statue of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. We did not know when we got it that the University where they studied has a full-life statue in the lobby. They were thrilled with the gift. Also, we...

Nov 28, 2010 - Santa Monica day trip

Gerry & Geraldine are driving up from Hemet today to join us as we finish the final leg of Route 66. We depart at 8:30, it is about 100 miles to finish the route,so we should be back in the early afternoon. From Victorville, we jump onto I-15, over the Upper Cajon Pass, where we cross over the Cajon Summit at 4260 feet. Down the other side is a 6% grade for 4 miles, where we can see down the valley, which is quite spectacular. We take the Cleghorn exit to get on 66, which runs alongside Cajon Creek, through rugged country, created by the...

Oct 21, 2010 - Santa Monica, California

Up bright and early this morning, and decided to head in towards Los Angeles. The rain has quit in that area, and this gives us a chance to ride through the Los Padres mountain range and National Forest, in search (again) for the Tarantual migration. Turkey is obsessed with these little spiders (or should I say Huge Spiders!!!) So, there we are, coasting along the mountainside, when I spy with my little eye.....you guessed it - a Tarantula trying to cross the road. I pull over and tell Turkey, so we both turn around, and pull off the side...

May 19, 2010 - Los Angeles

In LA we went to the Chinese Theatre and walked along the Walk of Fame, where I quickly found Kiefer's star whilst Kev found The Hoff. We took a drive to Beverly Hills to see the houses of the stars (unfortunately, after much research we couldn't find a listing for Kiefer) and we've been to some great bars and eateries here. The weather has been surprisingly chilly here, but we still found the opportunity to see Muscle Beach, which proves you don't need muscles to go there as they let us in! Whilst we've had a wonderful time travelling and...

Feb 17, 2010 - Can This Bike Live?

You never know what is going to happen! We drove our car from Simi Valley through the hills of Malibu and after about 30 minutes of twists and turns popped out on the Pacific Ocean. Our destination - Santa Monica and a nice bike ride along the ocean. We found a shady place to park, put about $3.50 worth of quarters in the parking meter, got the bikes off the rack and then there was trouble. My bike's wheels would not move. It was something serious. GPS told us where the closest bike shop was but they couldn't fix it. They referred us to...
