Jul 13, 2017 - Missed connections but a completed checklist

So another early morning! The kids did a great job of getting up by 7:30 and getting down for breakfast. In fact, we finished ahead of time and were able to head out for our walk down to Fisherman's Wharf before our 8:15 goal. We found the City Sightseeing office and redeemed our online voucher for the tickets to Muir Woods and Sausalito. The bus was to leave to 9am and we were first on the bus; getting really good seats. Turns out the bus wasn't exactly full. Our "guide" was Russell--who introduced himself by saying that he was normally a...

Jul 12, 2017 - On & Off and In & Out

July 12 Today we needed to use the second/last day of our passes so we started off with the Hop On/Hop Off bus. We'd planned to catch the 10:15 one just a couple of blocks from the hotel but it was running late, didn't arrive until 10:45 so the day was already behind schedule. We rode it for about half an hour and then got off near the piers, intending to go to the Exploratorium (Pier 15). The stylized map the bus uses is really cute but pretty unhelpful as far as determining where you are. Turns out the bus dropped us off at Pier...

Jul 11, 2017 - A Busy day and an unexpected sighting

Well, I can say that the Coast Starlight train is much smoother than the City of New Orleans but it still was not a restful night. I don't think it was the train as much as I just couldn't get comfortable. I had asked Armenio for a 6:50am wake up call and told Jef to ask for the same. Jef heard 6:15. I'm not sure what Armenio heard but Jef was outside out door knocking at 6:25, saying that Armenio hadn't gotten him up. Sigh. Anyway, we were all up and in the dining care for breakfast by 7:25. Everybody but me had French toast; I had the...

Jun 13, 2017 - Final Day in San Francisco

Susan and I slept in a bit and wandered down to the ferry to go back into the city. We had two objectives--(1) ride the cable cars and (2) get a pound of Sees candy. Well and maybe get some souvenirs. We got off the ferry and found out they were have market day and food truck day near the ferry terminal. So we browsed the stands and got some Italian donuts to hold us over until lunch. Our guide with Dlyan tours had told us of an easy way to catch a cable car and not have to stand in a long line near Fisherman's Wharf. There is a cable car...

Jun 12, 2017 - Tour of San Francisco

We all got up about 6:30am for our big tour of the city. The Gallos were on the road by 7:15am and Susan and I and Harley were at the kennel at 7:30 am to drop Harley off for a couple of days. Susan and I then walked to the ferry which took about 15 minutes. We caught the ferry and relaxed as we crossed the bay. Not a bad way to get to work. The ferry terminal was about a 25 minute walk from the meeting point for our tour. We had heard from Elisabeth that they were there and we hurried through the streets of San Francisco-- not too many...

Jun 11, 2017 - On to San Francisco

I have been getting a lot of flack from my daughter Jessica that I am not posting fst enough for her to enjoy my trip. :) So this will be a short post that will help catch me up. We got up and headed off to San Francisco. It was a really pretty drive back through the high plains and central valley. It really has hit home on this trip how diverse this country is and how much empty land exists. We drove through the central valley and then up along the San Francisco Bay through Berkeley and across the bridge into Marin county. It was Sunday so...

May 21, 2017 - San Francisco - Need to add photos

After a good nights sleep, we were up reasonably early however enjoyed a bit of a lie in. Watched the street sweepers doing their best to sweep the street however cars parked along the way didn't help and they need to sweep the footpaths as well. A good fire hose or two to clean the paths would be a good idea too. This is a really scummy area and it's hard to believe that two blocks down is the Hilton San Francisco. Walking along the street here is like walking down the stairs on the Roe St side of the Perth railway station....I always hold...

May 20, 2017 - San Francisco - need to add photos

I woke at 4:00am, much earlier than I wanted to especially as we'd had a late night last night....I'm still on New York time. Read until Pete woke and we set out to explore San Francisco. We re-traced our steps to close to where we came in last night and walked down Market Street. It was quite grotty and messy....lots of rubbish around and different kinds of people. I was wondering what sort of a city we'd come to. Our plan was to head to the water and after walking for a while, we caught a tram. A local lady on board gave me some into...

May 19, 2017 - Farewell New York, hello San Francisco

I woke early this morning so made sure I had all the electronics charged up before we set off today. We'd tossed up whether to catch the train to the Bronx this morning before our trip to the airport but decided against it. Instead, we went for a walk along the river towards the Washington Bridge. We haven't really walked around our neighbourhood and it was nice to be out in the cool morning. I had plans of walking to Washington Bridge and part way over it however it's a major artery and with all the freeway roads going in and off, it was...

May 10, 2017 - Touring the CITY on Hop on Hop off bus

Over the course of our travels we have found that using the Hop on/Hop off tour bus to be a pretty good strategy. You get a good over overview of the city plus you can stop and see more if yhou want to... just wait till the next bus comes along. Makes for a long day though. Today we used it a lot.

May 10, 2017 - Last day in San Francisco

The day dawned slightly cloudy but warm. We had a slow start as we were checking out and were being collected by Vikki and Tom. J grabbed some bananas and oat bars for breakfast from the local Safeway and were all ready standing on the "sidewalk" at 11:15 to be collected. The first stop was just up the hill at Lombard Street - the famous windy steep street. We drove down the bends (slowly!) and then stopped to take some pictures. It was so steep you had to be careful exiting the car or else you would be back down on Columbus st in 2 minutes...

May 9, 2017 - Electric Knickers

We managed to get a decent sleep, not rising until about 7:30. It can be a bit noisy - traffic, passing pedestrians, people closing doors in other rooms. But this didn't cause us any problems. As soon as we got up J emailed cousin Vikki and an agreed meet time of around 11:30 was set. J&C decided on a coffee and Anzac biscuit to start the day then they got ready and did a bit of washing. They were tempted to string up a line on the balcony - but C was worried about dust or fumes from the traffic. J was more worried about wind, with images...
