Sep 13, 2019 - San Diego - Day 2

Today we did a sort of Grand Tour of San Diego. Before doing so, we met a charming couple, Mike and Barbara who are from Victoria, British Columbia (Canada). Mike is retired from the Canadian Navy (after 30 years). We thoroughly enjoyed their company. Along our tour route, we saw the place where Wyatt Earp and his wife owned a gambling establishment and bordello, located on 4th Avenue in what is now the Gaslamp area. We also saw the U.S. Grant Hotel, an imposing edifice built by Grant's son. This is the first picture. Next is the front of...

Sep 12, 2019 - San Diego - Day 1

Sandy and I arrived safely in San Diego, but not without an amusing incident on the flight from Charlotte to San Diego. Since we travelled in First Class, we were provided lunch that ended with a delicious, warm chocolate chip cookie. Much to my amazement, Sandy seemed to wind up wearing a good amount of said cookie on her white blouse. Thankfully, the flight attendant provided some club soda for Sandy to cleanse herself. When she successfully did so, she looked like someone who participated in a wet T-shirt contest! Good news, beside...

May 4, 2019 - Bumps in the night and home

Well we made it off the ship and home today. The day, however, started with some excitement. We were up early and in the washroom getting ready when the captain came on the speaker system telling everyone in the stern of the ship to evacuate "immediately!" That did not sound good, so we hastily completed our ablutions and started getting dressed when he came on again to say that we had been rear-ended by another ship and, while there was damage, no one had been hurt and the danger was over. Those who left were getting back on. The irony of...

May 3, 2019 - Old Friends in Victoria

We got ready and went up for breakfast. Unlike other mornings we did not meet anyone we knew. We returned to our room and got reading materials then went up to the crow's nest to read. We met the CEO and his wife and were able to get the chair they had been using as the place was quite busy. We watched the Oosterdam which we had been shadowing all night as it navigated the Straits of Juan de Fuca between the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island. We then went down to the Lido and had lunch. We returned to our room and prepared to leave the...

May 2, 2019 - Another Sea Day

A sea day. We had breakfast and a walk around. We went top the spa expecting to purchase body lotion Christine has enjoyed, but discovered they did not stock it. She got some similar stuff and later begged some samples from our cabin steward. We returned to the cabin and decided on a cruise next January then went down to the future cruise desk and after a wait signed up for one leaving Ft Lauderdale and visiting Caribbean Islands we have never been to, including the Dutch islands of Aruba, Belaire and Curacao which I have wanted to see for...

May 1, 2019 - A day in San Francisco

We woke moored to the dock at San Francisco. We admired the views of the Golden Gate Bridge through the early morning mist and Alcatraz. We had breakfast with the CEO of CEIF and his wife and chatted for a while then went and got ready to explore Fisherman's Wharf. As we left the ship, we met the CEO and his wife who gave us directions to a shuttle that takes you part ways there. We waited on it, but could easily have walked the distance in that time. Two other of our friends left while we waited and when we passed them on the bus, they...

Apr 30, 2019 - Board at Sea

A sea day. We had breakfast with three of our fellow travellers then wandered round the ship for a short while before going to our cabin and watching the developing story in Venezuela. I went for an early lunch and Christine did some jigsaws and had lunch in the room then went to listen to the string ensemble followed by afternoon tea with the wives of the board members. I went to our first board meeting which went well. Christine was in the room when I returned and we discussed each others' activities before getting ready for dinner. We...

Apr 29, 2019 - Santa Barbara

We woke to cloudy skies and a hint of rain this morning - the first rain we have seen on this trip. We had a leisurely breakfast with the CEIF controller and his wife before getting ready and heading for the tender to take us to the pier at Santa Barbara. We had visited here ten years ago so were familiar with the town and had seen most of the places covered by the tours, so we had decided just to walk around the main street - State Street - area. As we came off the pier a shuttle was loading, but was obviously full so we kept walking to...

Apr 28, 2019 - Leaving San Diego

We had breakfast downstairs again, but this time the adjacent tables were occupied by people we knew. It was good to chat with them and share the knowledge of the surrounding area we had gained over this and earlier visits. We got some explanation at the front desk of some items on our account that puzzled me, then we went upstairs and finalized our packing. We brought our luggage down to be stored while we went for our last walk along the waterfront, past our ship, a Disney ship and the midway then round the park where the statue of the...

Apr 27, 2019 - Art and Old Friends

We had a leisurely breakfast in the hotel then arranged for our keys to be activated for the room which was on a different reservation. We set off for the post office to mail a sympathy card to one of our neighbours whose husband passed away this week. We walked back to a Church near the hotel in Little Italy. It has been well decorated and well preserved. It is 94 years old and has elaborate murals. We admired the art work then dropped down into Little Italy proper and browsed the many booths comprising the Art Walk. There are about three...

Apr 26, 2019 - Another Round on the Trolley

We again had breakfast in the hotel, collected our things and walked over to the information office where we got on the trolley for the second day of our ticket. We were fortunate as one drew up just as we arrived at the stop. We got off at the next stop which was Seaport Village. This is a collection of artisan type shops built around ponds and walk ways, alongside one of the marinas in the harbour. We had visited this before and at that time it was a colourful, busy and interesting place. Possibly due to our being there early in the day,...

Apr 25, 2019 - Coronado Revisited

We went down for a leisurely breakfast in the hotel then collected our things and went for a walk along to the tourist information place where we got various items of information and questions answered. We decided to take the ferry over to Coronado Island, so we bought the tickets and waited for the bout to come in. We were soon on our way and sat beside a family from Ohio where the schools are on Spring Break. We spoke of the things they had seen and the things they had missed and what we had done in past visits to San Diego. We got off...
