May 17, 2012 - Porterville, CA - Searching for Cooler Weather

(Ron Writing) The weather forecast was way off again. The forecast was for a high of 86° in Kernville but by late afternoon we were already up to 90° and the mercury was still rising. We decided to seek more pleasant weather so we packed up and left at about 1:30 PM. We drove to Porterville via several mountain roads that avoid having to backtrack to Bakersfield. From Wofford Heights we took CA-155 west – a very challenging drive that climbs about 2,600’ to the 6,100’ Greenhorn Summit in just 7.5 miles. That’s an average 8.8% grade over the...

May 28, 2010 - Family Update

It has been wonderful seeing my cousins. It has been nearly 5 years since our last visit. With my aunt's passing this past March, it leaves mom as the matriarch of the family. Stacy had planned a large BBQ that most of the family was able to attend. Keith, Staceys husband, was the grillmaster and prepared the steaks to perfection. We were able to see Linda and her husband Louis, with daughter Katie and her most beautiful son, Landon. Debbie and her new to us husband, Rick and Charlie, my wacky cousin who is approaching 18 months sobriety....

Jan 28, 2010 - Touching Base and Finishing up in Porterville

TOUCHING BASE WITH SOME HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS: I am concerned about two high school friends, Kathy Shropshire Rebensdorf (addressing a serious illness) and Susan Baird Queen (dealing with very ill husband) so bake some more cookies (not knowing what else I might do) and manage to catch up with both of them at the Porterville hospital, where Susan's husband Roy has been admitted and Kathy is undergoing some outpatient treatment. I am incredibly impressed with the positive, constructive attitude that Susan, Roy, Kathy and her husband Ken...

Nov 15, 2009 - Porterville Area with Family and Friends (11/6/09-1/29/10)

CATCHING UP IN PORTERVILLE: We are delighted to make it to Porterville by Friday afternoon, and EXTREMELY grateful to mom's neighbors, the Frank Garcia family, for letting us park the RV at their level site next door to mom's. We have a nice dinner with Mom, sister Aprille and her husband Mike and daughter Briana on Friday; Richard arrives Saturday and he and Shirley meet up with some of his classmates and their spouses at a local pizza place. We enjoy seeing Mike's choir (especially since Richard adds his voice)and Aprille serve as lay...

Oct 26, 2009 - Good-bye to California

We made our goal!! On a beautiful day we took the bike and headed for the Sierra Nevada mountains. I was skeptical about getting to see Giant Sequoias because all we could see as we approached the range was lots of rocks and golden grasses with a few straggly trees; however, it really changed after the first couple ridges. There were crystal clear streams tumbling over huge boulders. We climbed to 7,000 ft. Giant Sequoias are only found on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California and between 5,000 and 7,500 ft. Talk...

Jan 2, 2001 - 1973 March 10-11 - Visit with Uncle Silas Gilbreath and Family

This week end I flew to Visalia, where Uncle Silas and Aunt Clemmie picked me up to take me to their home in Porterville. I had not seen them since I was about 14 years of age, so we had a lot of catching-up to do. One of their daughters, Mary Clark, and her family also live in Porterville. While I was there, another daughter, Joyce Loveall, and her family drove up from Bakersfield. It was wonderful to see them and to meet their families. Of course, the time just flew!
