Jun 13, 2010 - San Juan Capistrano & Laguna Beach

About a 40 minute drive south led us to Mission San Juan Capistrano. Entering the gates of the Mission was like stepping into a different time and place. The view was mesmerizing. Every color of the rainbow was represented by the flowers and trees. One's mind and spirit were suddenly filled with an unexplainable peace. It is absolutely breath taking. The cool breeze of the Pacific wafted the purple petals of the Jacaranda trees to cover the green grass with a purple mat. The eroded brown adobe walls contrasted with the exposed red brick....

Jun 12, 2010 - Kayak Backbay Newport

We launched the kayaks about 9AM on the beach near Back Bay Estuary-the largest in southern California. It was an easy paddle and we followed the shoreline around. We spotted some few waterfowl and several jumping mullet. The wind and current were to our advantage the first half. We suddenly realized that signs posted in the waterway stated that a permit was required in order to kayak the area! Oops,we had already completed more than half our journey without incident. So we continued our travels and enjoyed the beautiful peaceful scenery....

May 20, 2010 - The real O.C.

OMG did I struggle to get out of bed this morning. Then when I did I felt like crying when I realised I had to pack my bag. That was a mission in itself, travelling, Disney Land and a shopoholic don't go well together. Once we have been to Walt Disney World too I will definatley be sending a Disney package home. We missed breakfast but made it out before checkout. We locked up our bags for the day we were going to the real O.C. Newport Beach. I ate chocolate chip cookies at the bus stop for breakfast. The bus ride was about 1.5 hours, but...

Jan 25, 2010 - Newport Beach Sightseeing

We're staying at Newport Dunes RV Park, one of those very large parks with hundreds of sites, that accepts reservations up to two years in advance for the summer, but isn't too busy this time year. It's on the Back Bay, part of the series of canals and inland waterways that make Newport Beach a great protected harbour. In a few months, this RV Park will be hopping, I'm sure, with its swimming pools and spas filled with happy campers, its horseshoe pits clinking, its day use pavillions fully rented, the bicycles booked, the kayaks paddling,...

Jan 24, 2010 - Newport Beach, CA

So this Southern California place is pretty interesting. I mean, there is a LOT of traffic. And once you hit, say, Santa Monica, FREEWAYS going EVERYWHERE. It's a little overwhelming. We had a lovely drive down 101 from Pismo Beach to Oxnard this morning. The sun was shining, the coastline was lovely, the beaches were beautiful. We noted the oil rigs off Santa Barbara. And a guy standing on the balcony of his upscale hotel, face to face with an oil well pumping away in the lot next door. Just part of the scenery. A little strange, but...

Apr 18, 2008 - Newport Beach, CA

We spent the past few days in Newport Beach, CA. The park we stayed in was in a great location, pretty close to lots of things. It had a great walking trail and was right next to a bike trail that ran along the water. All along the bike trail, there were beautiful homes that overlooked the water and the trail. We spent time biking around Balboa island, which was about 2 miles down the road from us. It was beautiful. I would describe it as a quaint, yet crowded beach town. There really was one main street with shops and restaurants and the...

Mar 13, 2008 - Golf in Moreno Valley, dinner in Newport Beach

Pam, Kelly and I played 18 holes on Thursday morning with Bob. His neighbor and friend Jeff is the golf pro at The Ranch Golf Club in Moreno Valley, not far from San Bernardino. Very nice course that was in excellent shape. Soo joined us for the back nine and we had lunch at the clubhouse restaurant. Bob - ever the Mr. Fixit, repaired the large door frame for the cart shed under the clubhouse but anchoring the 2x6 with some major bolts, tightening some and replacing one. Bob is one of the most amazing handimans (amazing in other ways too)we...

Feb 25, 2008 - Newport Beach

Well here we are in Newport Beach, Orange County, California. For those of you who have watched The OC on TV, this will mean something to you. I, sad person that I am, used to love it!! The resort is amazing. We are right on the water and there is a great pool and spa. The cast of the OC came here when it opened and put their handprints in cement like outside Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. That is on display in the reception. It is slightly cheaper here than in Anaheim but definitely worth the $56. Shame we are not staying longer. We...

Feb 5, 2008 - Newport Beach, CA

Super Tuesday and we were back on the road headed for a thirty day stay at the Newport Dunes RV Resort in Newport Beach. After a quick drive up the coast we settled into our new campground/resort. Similar to our place in San Diego, the Newport Dunes has a beautiful pool, Jacuzzi, on site market and restaurant, boat and canoe rentals, access to a fitness center (small, but enough equipment to get a work out if needed), and very clean laundry and bathrooms (although, wouldn’t you know it, the bathrooms closest to our campsite did not have hot...

Dec 26, 2007 - Catching up...just got an Internet Connection

We've had a hard time getting a connection the past few days. Here's a few pics to catch up with. Still having a good time. Grace is asking to go home. Lauren cried last night when we were leaving Disneyland for the last time for this trip. It was sad. When we told her we were leaving, tears came down her eyes immediately, and she said, "I don't want to leave Disneyland." Truly a sad moment in time. We've still got the SD Zoo on Thursday before we head back to Corpus. Eating dinner in Covina, CA with aunt Neva tonight...a pretty low key...

Sep 16, 2007 - La T Da, Newport Beach

We didn't plan on spending three days in Newport, but I really wanted to take the PCH 1(Pacific Coast Highway) up to Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Venice and Santa Monica. So we parked the Bus at the Newport Dunes RV Resort on the Back Bay and took the Trail Blazer up the PCH. I am so glad we didn't take the Bus. I would have gone crazy, or crazier. We spent all day Friday driving north on the PCH and seeing the sights. What a beautiful drive and yes, Venice Beach looks just like the movies portray it. The only thing I am...
