Jun 23, 2013 - Camping in the Redwoods

Woke up to fog this morning. Left the campground at 9:00 AM and most of the fog had started to burn off. KOA was a good spot but expensive compared to what we were used to spending. Marilyn was nervous but it was a good drive with only a couple of tricky spots. Turned inland at Fort Bragg and that road was interesting. Had all been repaved so was in great condition but very twisty and winding. Some ups and downs but no cliffs. Joined US 101 at Willits and then it was smooth sailing. Alternated between 2 and 4 lanes. Some ups and downs but...

Jul 17, 2012 - Avenue of the Giants

16 Jul 2012. Travel day – moving to Myers Flat, CA – which is no more than a bump in the road. We planned to go to Lassen Volcanic National Park, east of Redding, CA. As luck would have it, when we were in Crescent City, CA David went into the Chamber of Commerce looking for information on California (we had requested info from CA numerous times but never received anything). The man there was very helpful and when David said we were going to Lassen he asked if he knew there was a forest fire there which was closing the highway at times and...

Jun 21, 2012 - Ukiah To Myers Flat

We drove from Ukiah to Myers Flat (107 miles) and arrived at Giant Redwoods RV and Camp about 1:15 in the afternoon. This portion of highway 101 actually goes through small towns, and many times it becomes a two lane road. The 101 actually becomes the main street of the small towns in this part of California. <<< Very Cool! We are in Humboldt County, and are camped on the South Fork of the Eel River, right next door to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. For those of you still a bit confused, we are on The Avenue of the Giants. To make it easier,...

Nov 23, 2010 - Love these big trees

Tuesday, November 23, 2010 On Monday morning the sun was actually shining. What an unexpected event. Didn’t last long tho. I did get to take most of my walk in the sun. I strolled around the boat harbor in Crescent City as we are right across the road from it. I always like to wander around boats. The fleet is preparing for Dungeness crab season and there are thousands of crab pots stacked up all around the harbor. There were sea lions barking and swimming in the harbor also. We went to Redwood National Park visitor center and got maps for...

Apr 15, 2008 - Avenue of the Giants, California

Good Day to All. It had been eating Billie up knoiwing we had left California before he saw the Giant Redwods at the Avenue of Giants. So, he drove us 227 miles one way to see them. You might think 200 miles no problem 3-4 hour drive, NO, 6 hour drive there and then a 6 hour drive back due to it being HWY 101 along mountain and coastal side. Speeds under 50 mph most of the time. The view was beautiful I must admit. We followed a river through the mountains. We watched huge waves crash onto shore. We saw redwood trees bigger than life...

Apr 15, 2008 - The Awesome California Redwoods

After leaving our friend Adie in Napa, we drove north along highway 101 to spend some time up in the “Redwood Country” of northwest California. David had spent some time visiting the redwoods when he lived in California back in the 1970s, but Jo hadn’t been there before. Boy was she in for a treat. Our first exposure to the redwoods was driving thru a small grove of them just a few hours north of Napa. Amazing to be driving along the highway when it suddenly winds thru what seems like a tunnel cut thru a mountain—the huge trees are so big...
