So, you noticed the title "Mother Lode"? State route 49 is the gold mining history route laden with quaint towns, mountain wineries, and sapphire lakes. There is no mistaking this is a rural area with cattle, horses, and burros. One winery advertises tours via horse back. The burro is held in high esteem. Originally, they carried the "lode" from the mines. Clarissa(see photo) is a direct descendant of the 1850's. How were we going to select a winery? Had I not skipped the high mountains of California, I would have missed Gold Country. California's Gold Country is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains along Highway 49 (is the route number a coincidence, or was it named by historians in honor of the '49ers?). After the discovery of gold at Sutter's sawmill in 1848, mining towns sprang up all over this area.
