Apr 18, 2013 - Day 2

4/18 – Today was a driving/audio-book-listening day (Per Petterson’s To Siberia). To Morro Bay was my goal. The Royal Road it may be, but Hwy 101 is a schizo route -sometimes freeway, sometimes country road. I lost count of the mission bell guideposts as well as the multitude of laborers in the fields along the way (now Mexican rather than the Indians of mission days). In the afternoon I abandoned the CA Mission Trail for a day, turning seaward through a gorgeous coastal pass. Rte. 46 looks like the Sonoma Valley with hill-to-hill vineyards...

The Royal Road

Jan 11, 2013 - Beach Refresher

After all that cold and wintery weather in Fernley and Sacramento, David was hunkering for a beach fix. He decided to look for somewhere along the central coast, possibly from Cambria to Santa Barbara, hoping to find someplace where we could stay for a month, before heading down to the desert. Alas, there was no monthly availability at any park that we could afford, so we had to settle for a week, instead. So, it would be a week in one location, a few days in another, and then an earlier arrival to the Anza Borrego SP area. One thing we...

Oct 25, 2012 - Hearst Castle

Opulence defined, we went to the Hearst Castle today. William Randolph Hearst wanted to build “a little something” up on top of the hill on the property he inherited from his parents. It was his father’s ranch, which at its grandest was 250,000 acres. They have sold off some of the land, but it is still a working ranch of 80,000 acres. He had camped on the property with his parents all his life and love it there, for good reason. The view of the ocean is spectacular. His parents would not give him the property when they were alive because...

Oct 24, 2012 - Morro Bay

Move up the coast to Morro Bay. We were just planning on staying overnight, but we all fell in love with the town. We all seemed to shift down a gear and become very relaxed just from being there. It’s a small town of only 10,000 people. Industry is fishing and tourism. There are great restaurants with fresh caught seafood. There is a superb bakery in town, that we visited every day to get home made fruit popovers and macaroons. Yum.

Sep 17, 2012 - Highway 1 - A drive that was fun and full of terror

We left Pacifica and began our adventure down the coast of California. The beginning of the drive was fun and I had a lot of "wows" come out of my mouth. The middle of the trip was much more terrifying. Ok, maybe that is a little exaggerated but it was definitely nerve-wracking to say the least. The final stretch was exhausting. The stress of the day got to both of us and we stopped early to drink heavily. ha, ha! No we didn't drink heavily but we talked about it. Some of the history of the highway which I find fascinating about this...

Aug 12, 2012 - Morro Bay

Today is a free day. We drove south to San Luis Obispo. We wanted to look at the Mission there. We arrived when a mass was starting so we decided to attend – luckily it was the mass in English. The Mission is very narrow and looks much like you would expect. It was established in 1799 but has been rebuilt several times. We looked around town a little, there were a lot of small eateries and shops. We moved on towards Morro Bay to enjoy the beach for a while. We took our chair and sat so we were sheltered a little by the sand dunes. It just...

Jun 9, 2012 - Morro Bay CA

The weather today was great so we decided to take advantage of it and see as much as we could from our base here in Morro Bay. We wheeled out of here at about 9:15 and drove around the corner and onto the Pacific Coast Highway northbound toward the town of San Simeon and the Hearst Castle. The drive took us under an hour and we pulled into the Visitor Center just after 10:00. We had tickets for the 11:00 tour but they said we could go on the 10:20 trip if we wanted, so we took them up on the offer and hopped on the bus for the short drive...

Westbound Again

Jun 8, 2012 - Morro Bay CA

OK, things have changed. We are actually farther from LA than we were yesterday, but let me explain why. We are going to catch up with Michele’s cousin down near LA, and they are leaving on a cruise next week so we figured we would get there today to see them before they leave. However, they chatted and they don’t leave until next Saturday and their daughter will be in town Tuesday so we are going to delay getting there for a couple days. That makes sense for us because we were going to have to backtrack from LA to our current location in...

Westbound Again

Oct 21, 2011 - Cayucos

We spent our last two days at the ocean in the little town of Cayucos, which is just north of Morro Bay. Described in the California Travel Guide as "...one of the last of the old fashioned CA beach towns", it is pretty low key, with no high-rise buildings, and only a string of shops and restaurants catering to tourists. Our motel was right on the beach, which is long and sandy...great for walking. There is a section of the beach that is set aside for dog owners, where dogs can run off-leash. Miss Daisy loved that! She ran and ran. Just...
