Mar 18, 2019 - Going back to Cali...
Today we woke from a great sleep to a beautifully warm and sunny day :) We got delicious coffees from the parking lot kiosk and hit the road...first stop Bandon, Oregon where we checked out the old town and grabbed lunch at the brewery. Right next door was a gallery that shows the works from a group called Washed Ashore (www.washedashore.org) that makes art from garbage that has washed ashore on the Oregon Coast. Some very cool stuff and a clever and creative way to facilitate awareness on the subject. We then headed south and enjoyed a...Jump to full entry
Feb 18, 2019 - Heading N.
Leaving early and hitting the road via 101 to Eureka....beautiful weather the whole way! Got here just at dusk, perfecto. I really enjoyed the huge changes in the landscape along the way and we especially were happy that it was a holiday...traffic seemed to always be going the OTHER way, ha! And very little in downtown SF! Yes! Heading for Brookings, OR tomorrow...by noon?Jump to full entry
Sep 12, 2018 - Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
Spent last night in a mom & pop motel called Villa West. No AC and it was right on US 101. Knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep w/ windows open due to noise so kept them wide open all evening to cool down the room. It’s was already in the mid 50s before sundown so the room did cool down nicely, however even w/ the windows closed the traffic noise kept me from getting a decent night’s sleep. Tonight I’m in a Roadway Inn. Has AC but again, I’m right on 101. Seems a bit better insulated so I don’t notice the traffic as much but we will see....Jump to full entry

Jun 1, 2017 - Northern CA and Southern coast of Oregon
After leaving Yosemite we traveled north on RT 101. Staying in a couple of Harvest Host wineries (ah yes, for free... except for buying some wine, lol). Our last stay with the Thousand Trails organization was in the Russian River RV park. While there we went to the Napa valley having lunch and see the "Old Faithful" of California. It is a geyser that erupts frequently... far from the impressive experience of Old Faithful in Yellowstone. Also, had a brief tour to the Charles M Schultz museum in Santa Rosa. Seeing Paul Bunyan & Babe in the...Jump to full entry
May 16, 2017 - It doesn't rain in California? Yeah, right!
Although the sunset at the Elk Cove Inn was unremarkable thanks to the clouds, the breakfast was fantastic. Eggs, sausage, cheese grits, fruit, waffles and more. We loaded up up both our tummies and the bikes and headed out in the rain to see the redwood giants. Route 101 was open luckily and the scenary was really quite nice. Eventually we found the Avenue of the Giants and were dissappointed to discover the largest tree was inaccessible due to the fact that the summer bridges had not been put in place yet but he told us how to get to the...Jump to full entry
May 4, 2017 - Crescent City to Eureka
With only 90 miles to our next stop at Eureka we took our time leaving Crescent City and drove out at 9:30 into a heavy sea mist. The view from our window this morning was just grey mist instead of the bright blue sky from yesterday. I drove slowly as did most other drivers as the road was only one lane in each direction and visibility was not good. Within the first 12 miles we came across three sets of roadworks. In each case we had up to 5 minutes wait for a pilot vehicle which escorted us past the workers who were repairing damage caused...Jump to full entry
Oct 17, 2016 - Trinidad,CA
We left Monday for Trinidad,Ca. It was an short drive and the weather remained unsettled but it was no longer dumping buckets. We booked into a Good Sam Campground for 2 nights and then headed to see the sites. We wanted to visit Patrick's Point State Park but decided to leave that until Tuesday as the weather was supposed to be much better by then. Monday we checked out Trinidad State Beach, not much to see or do, hiked up to the top of Trinidad Head, which had a great view of the coast from all sides and then went to Moonstone Beach to...Jump to full entry
Jul 20, 2016 - Remember Angel, it's just an adventure!
This was the easiest travel stretch we have had so far. We took the 101 all the way from Cloverdale to Eureka, CA. Saw some beautiful redwood trees on the way. The truck had a bad shimmy so we took it to a shop in Eureka. Long story short, we had to have a wheel bearing replaced and apparently some tie rods were worn. They only had time for the wheel bearing but when Steve picked up the truck, he was in the parking lot and the truck lurched forward. His first thought was that someone backed into the truck but no one did so it was, oh no now...Jump to full entry
Sep 3, 2015 - Eureka, California
On our way to Eureka we took a scenic detour off of Highway 101 through some more of the Redwoods. Nice to see them through the RV window which always offers a better view. In Eureka we toured an interesting place called the Blue OX Millworks. This place was run by a gentleman who had woodworking equipment and printing equipment that was over 100 years old and was still in operation. He uses the equipment to help train high school students and veterans in different skills. He was an interesting person who has a passion for helping others...Jump to full entry
Jul 2, 2015 - While in Eureka, CA
Daily Mileage--257 Total Trip Mileage--774 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wed. July 1--We left Napa this morning around 9 AM and drove to Eureka, CA on Route 101. I must admit I was not looking forward to the drive--I heard so many horror stories--but it wasn't that bad. Most of the drive was double lane, some single lane, and some very curvy parts with redwood trees right along side the road!! So here's what I think--It's doable, it's pretty, it's long and I probably would take an...Jump to full entry
Jun 21, 2015 - Arcata and restful afternoon
We got ready after breakfast and drove north into Arcata to the First Baptist Church. We were warmly greeted by a couple who had originated in Spruce Grove and Carval Corner outside Edmonton. He was in the wood industry and had been transferred down here 50 years ago for three years and was still here. The Church is near the Humboldt State University and during term time about half their congregation is made up of students who attend there. They said between classes being over and members on vacation, the attendance was only a third of what...Jump to full entry
