Mar 17, 2014 - Where The Bears Are Big!

Our first stop on this new adventure was not a “new” campground for us but it is a favorite. Serrano Campground is in the San Bernardino National Forest, near the town of Fawnskin, on the north side of Big Bear Lake. It is a rare occurrence to find a National Forest campground with full hook-ups, paved sites and only $38 a night. The hook-up sites do not have view of the lake but it is an easy (paved) walk/bike to the lake or a short drive to the shops and dining in Big Bear Village. Our son, David and daughter-in-law, Sara along with...

The only thing I did of interest today was spend a couple of hours at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo which is mainly a rehabilitation facility where 90% of all the animals they get are successfully released back to their native environment. All the animals on exhibit are either too injured or have been imprinted by humans by being raised as pets & cannot be released back to the wild. It’s only a small zoo on just over 2 acres but they have an incredible variety of animals from bears to eagles to wolves & all the common local inhabitants like...

Oct 23, 2013 - Big Bear Lake - Cajon Pass

I wrote to my brother yesterday that there hasn’t been a cloud in the sky all week so of course, I woke up to lots of high cloud this morning. It’s still quite warm & very still so I went off to explore the mountains. I drove through Crestline & Lake Arrowhead then along a road called Rim of the World Drive & it was exactly that. It’s one of the most spectacular mountain roads I’ve ever been on & was made even more special because all the valleys were filled with cloud & fog. The road I was on ended up running into the Interstate 15 freeway...

Oct 22, 2013 - Big Bear Lake

I’ve decided to go to Las Vegas next week but it took me a long time to sort out where I wanted to stay. It took me nearly all morning but I’ve finally got a reservation for an apartment in an accommodation tower adjacent to the MGM Grand. I also did a load of washing which involved lots of running back & forth because the laundry is at the other end of the building & there was no indication about how long the washer or dryer cycles were. It was another beautiful day so I went for a drive around the lake, past the very interesting dam....

Oct 21, 2013 - Big Bear Lake

I found out that the Discovery Centre which is on the other side of the lake, is closed on Tuesday & Wednesday so I needed to go today. However, I wasn’t very impressed. I wanted to go on some of the shorter hikes but all the parking lots had notices saying you must display your Recreation Pass (but no indication as to where you’d get one). I went back to the Discovery Centre & she tried to sell me an annual Pass for $80 or I could pay $5 a day. I didn’t want to do either of those things as I didn’t know which days I’d be using a National...

I stayed in the apartment nearly all day, working on the computer, organising paper-work, starting to catch up on the diary & downloading my photos to an Internet Dropbox that David had set up. When I got tired of working, I walked around the resort & took some photos of the lake but basically had a quite uninteresting day.

Oct 18, 2013 - West Covina to Big Bear Lake

I didn’t have to check out until noon & wasn’t supposed to arrive at the time-share until 5:00pm so I had a lazy morning & left about 11:00am. I stopped in San Bernadino because I’d read that the very first McDonald’s store was opened here on Route 66 by the McDonald brothers on December 12th, 1948. One of the brothers wanted his hamburger stands to be more visible & came up with the idea of the golden arches & their 2nd store & first McDonald’s franchise with the golden arches was in Phoenix, Arizona. When he was 52, Ray Kroc invested his...

Feb 29, 2012 - Big Bear Lake

We took a ride on the Rim of the World Scenic Byway which takes you through the San Bernardino National Forest to Big Bear Lake. It's a very scenic drive through the mountains. We passed railroad tracks that traverse the Cajon Pass which was formed by movements of the San Andreas Fault. Along the way we came upon Silverwood Lake which is a beautiful lake nestled among the mountains. As we climbed upward toward Big Bear Lake, we encountered the remnants of a recent snowfall. Californians in the southern parts of the state really get excited...

Dec 29, 2009 - HAPPY 2010!!!!

Can you believe it is almost a new decade???? Time goes fast....even faster as we get older....or maybe we just move slower.... We had a wonderful December, in part, because we had completed our shopping early. We celebrated Mike's birthday, early in the month, with dinner and a concert by the 3 Irish Tenors. Those voices truly raise the hair on the back of your neck. Such wonderful sounds. We spent weekends watching plenty of football. Visited with friends and family. Came up to Big Bear for the Christmas Holiday. Jodi was able to come up...

Nov 30, 2009 - NOVEMBER

Spent the first week of November in Big Bear, enjoying the Fall weather. Came down the hill so we could stop at our favorite bike shop, Two Wheel - One Planet and of course, our favorite bike shop owner, Kristin. We got to hear about her biking trip in Tuscany. Glad she had such a good time. While at the beach, we got together with friends and saw the movie, Race Across The Sky about the Leadville 100. This is a mountain biking event that is held each year in Leadville, Colorado, an old mining town. Lance Armstrong has participated in 2008...

Nov 2, 2009 - OCTOBER

We ended September by going to the nursery and buying pumpkin for carvings. Eminger’s Nursey, here in Big Bear, carries the best pumpkins. We got all the Fall decorations down from the attic which included the pumpkin carving tools. Mike set up the table in the driveway and Jodi, Mike & I began to carve. Mike & I choose “free expression” pumpkin faces while Jodi opted for a baseball fan’s theme. All 3 of the pumpkins came out great! When we cleaned out the insides, we washed the seeds and baked them in the oven. Jodi will be taking them to...

Sep 27, 2009 - JUNE thru SEPTEMBER

Didn’t seem like we haven't been that busy since May but after going back over what we did, I guess we were busy! Attended a baby shower for a new addition to our family; she arrived on the 4th of July! Other additions to the family have been in the way of weddings; niece Ambrie married Tony, nephew Bryan married Blanca. We welcome them with open arms! On Father’s Day, Mike, Jodi & I traveled to Dodger Stadium for our annual celebration. The weather was hot, but Jodi & Mike enjoy the father/daughter tossing of the ball. Also in June, our...
