Sep 27, 2011 - Barstow, California

We left Kingman today and it was hot at 9 am. Stopped in town for the Powerhouse Museum. All about Route 66. Very interesting what they went thru to drive on 66. Across the street was a train display. Know Davis would have loved this one! Then it was back on the road again heading to the Oatman Highway. This took us up into the mountains on winding, curving roads that had gorgeous views, except there weren't many pull offs for the driver to enjoy the views. At times it was white-knuckle turns. Once we got to the top, 3,550 ft high, the view...

Sep 21, 2011 - Barstow, CA

Today, I only went 151 miles. I got lost, I was sent to the wrong street (by GPS) and I visited a museum in Victorville (the Burma shave signs) Finding Rt 66 was easy from Glendora to San Bernardino. then I tried to find a museum in Rancho Cucamonga. After a couple of hours and many miles, I found that it no longer existed. I then took the wrong route and almost ended up in Big Bear (a mountain area where Cal & Val have a cabin) Finally I went to Victorville and found Rt 66 which I took to Barstow. I decided to quit early and decide what...

Aug 31, 2011 - Barstow, California,

Today we are on our way to Las Vegas but we traveled 247 miles to Barstow, California for a night stay. We drove through orchards of lemons, oranges, apples and grapes. We followed a railroad along the side of the road that kept going in and out of tunnels through the mountains. Just before entering the Mojave Desert, there were windmills for as far as you could see across the horizon and covering the mountainside. The road through the Mojave Desert is arrow straight with sand, sagebrush, cactus trees for as far as you can see. We traveled...

Jul 16, 2011 - Day 6...California!!!

California...finally!!! Mile 2196 for Graham. Left Joseph City AZ at 6:45 this am and we were “standing on a corner in Winslow AZ” by 8 am. Such a fine site to see. Found we could take a lot of the original alignment of Rt 66 after Flagstaff right up to Barstow CA without too much back-tracking and interstate. Found CA to have the roughest roads though. Funny thing is, there isn’t much traffic on the old alignment!! What a great trip so far!! Had a narrow tunnel again today. Winslow and Williams AZ were pretty cool. We’ll be at Aunt Judy’s...

Jul 5, 2011 - Day 2, just left Barstow

We stopped in Barstow at the Rodeway Inn at 1AM. Hey, it was a clean room! It took about 30 minutes to wake the boys up and in the shower. We were all pretty tired. We had a good breakfast and coffee, filled up the gas tank and we are listening to Jeff Foxworthy. Good times! Our goal is to go as far as we can today!

Florida or Bust

Oct 30, 2010 - Barstow, CA

October 30 Arrived at Shady Lane RV Camp in Barstow. This park is wonderful for an overnight or a few days stay. There is no train or freeway noise and the people are so polite and friendly. Larry and I went to the drive-in (one of the few remaining drive-ins left in the US). Being Halloween week, they were playing only scary movies Saw 7 and Paranormal Activity 2 – not much of a plot. The next day we went to Rainbow Basin. Gorgeous layers of colors. We tried to find the petro glyphs which were supposed to be in Black and Inscription...

Oct 19, 2010 - Day 15

Today we are going to see a taping of "Price is Right" and then dinner with Gene's friends. We left the hotel about 11:30 am and headed into LA. We drove around Hollywood and the surrounding area. Saw places where Gene lived and worked when he lived there. Saw the stars on the sidewalks and the big Hollywood sign on the hill. We had lunch at a McDonalds and the went to the CBS Studio at 3 pm PT. Gene's friend Benta made arrangements for us, so we were taken to a waiting room and then escorted to the set of the Price is Right and seated in...

Sep 28, 2010 - The "charm" of eastern California

For the next several stops we are basically marking time. We are aiming to arrive in Cottonwood, Arizona (about 100 miles north of Phoenix) on October 4 to visit with our friends Fred and Jo Wishnie, who will be camp hosting at Dead Horse State Park for the month of October. We decided not to arrive on – or just before – the weekend, since we know that those destinations in northern Arizona are pretty popular on weekends with people looking to escape the heat of the city. Also, we figured we’d give the Wishnies time to adjust to their camp...

Aug 31, 2010 - Bakersfield to Barstow

Bakersfield was just what we needed… We met up with friends for one evening, spent time with family one day and drove around the area to see what Bakersfield was all about…. The thing that we really out it over the top for us was just lazing around at a resort… The RV Resort had everything that a 4 Star Hotel has except the added advantage of sleeping in our own bed each night… We read books, swam, dined at the restaurant, joined in for happy hour with some awesome nachos and reasonable priced drinks… It has been a long time since we didn’t...

Jul 8, 2010 - Heading back to Vegas

Tuesday 6th July We had a fairly relaxed morning yesterday, hanging around in Monterey. It was a fairly unremarkable place, with its version of Fisherman’s wharf, and Cannery Row, as immortalised by John Steinbeck. The main feature about the pier was that there were a number of seafood restaurants, all offering free samples of their (excellent) clam chowder – so many, that, in fact, there was no need to buy lunch as you could easily fill up on the free samples (we didn’t, but we certainly could have)! Cannery Row has also moved on since the...

May 31, 2010 - Las Vegas to Barstow,CA

We fought dense traffic out of Vegas and took six hours to drive some 200 miles to our 'oasis" in the desert RV park. It was truly restful to pull into the solitude of the Barstow RV Park on the edge of the Mojave desert. The barrren rolling hills and mini mountains of sand rolled slowly by our windows as we negotiated bumper to bumper traffic into California.
