Nov 2, 2020 - Parker to Silent Valley

After crossing the river, we are now back in California, San Bernardino County heading west and south. Following Highway 62 in the desert we come through the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) also known as 29 Palms. It is the largest U.S. Marine Corps base with approximately 20,000 active duty marines and sailors and other allied forces. Legend says that the name of the Twenty-Nine Palms was first used by gold miners because of the 29 Washingtonia Filifera Palm Trees that surrounded an Oasis. In about 1870, natives led the...

May 17, 2020 - Our Summer "Home"

May 13th we left for our summer home, Silent Valley. We drove through Hemet first to fill up our Propane tank at a gas station that always has the lowest prices for propane. Then we headed for Morongo Casino & Travel Center to fill up the motorhome with diesel, also the cheapest fuel in the area. We are now all topped off. I started my Pool Aerobics the next day, Saturday. I only had one student, but it’s a start. Larry started working his Seasonal Job as Ranger on Sunday. The Covid Virus rules are still in place, so masks are required...

Mar 29, 2020 - Silent Valley Campground

We needed a break from the isolation, thinking that Silent Valley would be more social. So we left to go back up to Silent Valley, and I had to tell the Therapist that I will be back later to finish my PT. They are allowing take-out food from the restaurant and take out drinks sitting outside social distancing. We at least could socialize with some friends. We had some social time in the evenings sitting around at campsites, and enjoyed meeting folks walking the campground.

Jan 25, 2020 - Early January, Silent Valley

Early January was spent at Silent Valley Club after spending New Year’s Eve there. It was much quieter than staying at our Garden Grove Elks, no fireworks. We spent the days walking Daisy and also walking together. Daisy always enjoys meeting all the other dogs on their walks or in the dog park. I need to digress briefly. The day we came up to Silent Valley, we had a little mishap at the RV repair facility in Hemet. We were there so they could see and order a part to be installed later. As we left, instead of driving out the back driveway...

Dec 31, 2019 - December Garden Grove/Silent Valley

We came back to our Garden Grove Elks Lodge RV park for Thanksgiving week and through December. We are seeing our doctors for annual check-ups and taking Daisy for her annual Vet visit. I found a groomer with good reviews on Yelp and took Daisy in for a little trim and bath. He trimmed her face a little shorter and round and took a little off the bottom, so she didn’t have hair dragging on the ground. My hip was still aching, so I went for a few weeks of Physical Therapy as recommended by my family doctor. Seemed to help a bit. I was taking...

Nov 24, 2019 - November in Silent Valley

During the summer up here at Silent Valley someone had painted rocks in all sorts of fun colors and designs and even some with sayings on them. Then they were hidden all over the campground to be found and rehidden. I was lucky enough to find a couple and hide them again. The raccoons were active, and we got to see them often. I wasn’t sure if there were any hummingbirds in the campground, but I put out my hummingbird feeder since the weather was still warm. It took a couple days, but one showed up and enjoyed the sugar water. After a...

Dec 31, 2018 - December GG & SV

December at our Elks lodge is always busy, there are lots of events and parties booked. One annual party early in December is a Christmas party for Down’s Syndrome children. One morning I looked up to see three Disney Princesses and Batman walking in front of my coach towards the back door of the lodge to surprise the children. Their costumes are beautiful, and Batman looked really buff. I grabbed my camera and caught them walking through the back of the parking lot. Our friends Mark & DeeDee invited us to attend their nephew's open house...

May 31, 2018 - The beginning of Summer Season

On the 14th of May we registered at Silent Valley for the duration of the summer. Larry completed the employee paperwork and became "Ranger 10". The funny part about that number is that there is a feral cat in the park (Rodent Control is his job title) whose name is "Ranger Ten". Since it is Springtime in the mountains, everything is lovely. There are flowering Yucca plants all along the mountain. The trees are budding their leaves, the hummingbirds are out and they are hungry. The Raccoons have made babies and are occasionally out and...

Apr 28, 2018 - Silent Valley for couple days

This morning Daisy took her time walking on the moist grass along the river. We left by 8:30 a.m. and it was an easy drive but very windy the last hour through the Palm Springs area. Did you know about The Cabazon Dinosaurs? I got a photo of one as we passed by. The Cabazon Dinosaurs have long been regarded as one of the most iconic roadside attractions. Featured in cult classics such as Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure and The Wizard, the dinosaurs staked their place in pop culture. Mr. Rex’s Dinosaur Adventure includes a dinosaur exhibit...

Feb 28, 2018 - February in Silent Valley

We stayed up at Silent Valley for the month of February. The park is quiet but for the sounds of nature. Oh, and the sound of workers extending the length of some sites. When the park was built, RV's were shorter so some of the sites are too short to accommodate the larger modern motorhomes and 5th wheel trailers. They are extending some of the sites with gravel to see how they will hold up before extending more. While there we are visiting with friends Eric, Ron & Tina and others as they came up to camp. Mid February the weather got...

Jan 19, 2018 - January in the mountains

We left Garden Grove Elks RV parking on January 2nd to relax at our membership campground, Silent Valley Club in the mountains above Banning, CA. The weather was crisp and cool, and we often were in the cloud layer at our altitude of 3,500'. The local mountain tops to the north (San Gorgonio) and the south (San Jacinto) both has a layer of snow on top. We enjoyed the quiet restful campground full of singing birds, the Mallard ducks arriving to make their home for the summer, and Red Tail hawks soaring thru the park looking for small...

Oct 8, 2017 - Halloween Decorations

We came up to Silent Valley Club, our membership campground to chill out for a month for free. This is a very popular season for our club as members lavishly decorate their sites, especially the main road side sites. There are many categories such as most lights, most scary, best theme, best animation, best animation and lights, etc. All day on Friday, before the Trick or Treat on Saturday, the campers pick up a ballot and walk around with the list of decorated sites and their category and vote on them. There are ones that are better seen...
