Dec 31, 2019 - December Garden Grove/Silent Valley

We came back to our Garden Grove Elks Lodge RV park for Thanksgiving week and through December. We are seeing our doctors for annual check-ups and taking Daisy for her annual Vet visit. I found a groomer with good reviews on Yelp and took Daisy in for a little trim and bath. He trimmed her face a little shorter and round and took a little off the bottom, so she didn’t have hair dragging on the ground. My hip was still aching, so I went for a few weeks of Physical Therapy as recommended by my family doctor. Seemed to help a bit. I was taking...

Nov 24, 2019 - November in Silent Valley

During the summer up here at Silent Valley someone had painted rocks in all sorts of fun colors and designs and even some with sayings on them. Then they were hidden all over the campground to be found and rehidden. I was lucky enough to find a couple and hide them again. The raccoons were active, and we got to see them often. I wasn’t sure if there were any hummingbirds in the campground, but I put out my hummingbird feeder since the weather was still warm. It took a couple days, but one showed up and enjoyed the sugar water. After a...

Dec 31, 2018 - December GG & SV

December at our Elks lodge is always busy, there are lots of events and parties booked. One annual party early in December is a Christmas party for Down’s Syndrome children. One morning I looked up to see three Disney Princesses and Batman walking in front of my coach towards the back door of the lodge to surprise the children. Their costumes are beautiful, and Batman looked really buff. I grabbed my camera and caught them walking through the back of the parking lot. Our friends Mark & DeeDee invited us to attend their nephew's open house...

May 31, 2018 - The beginning of Summer Season

On the 14th of May we registered at Silent Valley for the duration of the summer. Larry completed the employee paperwork and became "Ranger 10". The funny part about that number is that there is a feral cat in the park (Rodent Control is his job title) whose name is "Ranger Ten". Since it is Springtime in the mountains, everything is lovely. There are flowering Yucca plants all along the mountain. The trees are budding their leaves, the hummingbirds are out and they are hungry. The Raccoons have made babies and are occasionally out and...

Apr 28, 2018 - Silent Valley for couple days

This morning Daisy took her time walking on the moist grass along the river. We left by 8:30 a.m. and it was an easy drive but very windy the last hour through the Palm Springs area. Did you know about The Cabazon Dinosaurs? I got a photo of one as we passed by. The Cabazon Dinosaurs have long been regarded as one of the most iconic roadside attractions. Featured in cult classics such as Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure and The Wizard, the dinosaurs staked their place in pop culture. Mr. Rex’s Dinosaur Adventure includes a dinosaur exhibit...

Feb 28, 2018 - February in Silent Valley

We stayed up at Silent Valley for the month of February. The park is quiet but for the sounds of nature. Oh, and the sound of workers extending the length of some sites. When the park was built, RV's were shorter so some of the sites are too short to accommodate the larger modern motorhomes and 5th wheel trailers. They are extending some of the sites with gravel to see how they will hold up before extending more. While there we are visiting with friends Eric, Ron & Tina and others as they came up to camp. Mid February the weather got...

Jan 19, 2018 - January in the mountains

We left Garden Grove Elks RV parking on January 2nd to relax at our membership campground, Silent Valley Club in the mountains above Banning, CA. The weather was crisp and cool, and we often were in the cloud layer at our altitude of 3,500'. The local mountain tops to the north (San Gorgonio) and the south (San Jacinto) both has a layer of snow on top. We enjoyed the quiet restful campground full of singing birds, the Mallard ducks arriving to make their home for the summer, and Red Tail hawks soaring thru the park looking for small...

Oct 8, 2017 - Halloween Decorations

We came up to Silent Valley Club, our membership campground to chill out for a month for free. This is a very popular season for our club as members lavishly decorate their sites, especially the main road side sites. There are many categories such as most lights, most scary, best theme, best animation, best animation and lights, etc. All day on Friday, before the Trick or Treat on Saturday, the campers pick up a ballot and walk around with the list of decorated sites and their category and vote on them. There are ones that are better seen...

Sep 26, 2016 - Banning, California

Last travel day, end of summer travels. We crossed into California, traveled past the chocolate Mountains to the south (east of Salton Sea), then over Chiriaco Summit to see Coachella Valley come into view. Palm Springs is at the north-west end of Coachella Valley. We headed up the hill to Silent Valley Club in the San Jacinto Mountians, to stay for about a month before going down into Orange County to attend my 50th High School Reunion - what? How did I get that old? Seems to be a theme lately. I enjoyed the swimming pool in the mornings...

May 10, 2016 - Back up to the mountains

We came back up to Silent Valley to use some days of our membership, much cheaper than staying at the lodge. The weather was gorgeous and spring was blooming. There were sounds of bees and birds in the trees. The Mallard pairs that summer in our fishing pond, walk around the park daily. One couple had the first duckling of the season. We only saw one duckling with a mother who was being very protective. We also saw "Ranger Ten" the cat, doing his job, watching for a gopher. Daisy tried daily to chase squirrels, never catching them and...

Mar 20, 2016 - Up to Silent Valley

We went up to Silent Valley for about 2 weeks, enjoying the warm springs days. Daisy met two of the feral cats that go after the gophers in the park. The Golden male is called Ranger Ten and the Black/White female is his girlfriend. Both were a little stand-offish but warmed to Daisy’s slow approach. Every time we go for a walk, she is looking for the kitties.

Jul 18, 2015 - Lytle Creek CA

We moved over from Silent Valley to Lytle Creek on Tuesday the 14th. Got a campsite on the catfish lake. We are about 7 miles off I-15 where the big fire jumped the Interstate and burned 20+ vehicles. We are not in danger but see the DC 10 going over to go and make retardant drops. This morning another fire broke out, near Wrightwood. Again we are ok, but it will be nice to get out of this area next Tuesday when we will begin our way north. Sorry we don't have anything more interesting to report. Today we are expecting stormy weather from...
