Nov 1, 2019 - A day of awful traffic

Oh my gosh what a long day. We got underway at 0800, weather was sunny and clear. We started out on I5, no problems, as the traffic was pretty light. We are trying a different route today and jumping over to 99 in Sacramento. Things were going good, for awhile. We ran into an accident a couple hours into our change to 99, after Stockton, I believe. So we got held up there for about 30 minutes. We kept looking for rest areas around 1200 and 1300, to eat lunch. Guess what? there are very few rest areas on 99. We finally found one around...

Sep 17, 2019 - Bakersfield CA – Shady Haven RV Park & Mini-storage

We were only here for one night, but this place is a great RV park. Made you wish you could stay longer. The long term area is a gated community. The transient area, where we stayed is also gated, but we had access to both sections. If we ever come to Bakersfield again, this is where we’ll stay.

Retired at Last!

Sep 15, 2019 - Hot in Vegas!

Still in Las Vegas. Dang! It's so freakin" hot here! We could so never live here! Yesterday morning we took off after breakfast to drive out to Lake Mead. Not the most beautiful drive, but it beat sitting back at the RV park doing nothing (cuz it's too hot). The sad thing was, dogs are not allowed anywhere near the water, at least not where we were, so we didn't even get our toes wet! On our way back, we came upon a traffic backup, and saw some emergency vehicles up ahead. We asked the ranger what was going on and she said there was a...

Sep 13, 2019 - Stop #2: Las Vegas

We got a fairly early start and after a quick stop to gas up the Winnie, we were on the road by 9:45am. Another boring, ugly drive up and over the Tehachapi’s and through the desert. I have to admit that the “giant oasis in the sand” was a welcome sight after the 6-hour trek through the desert. We only stopped twice to stretch our legs and let Cooper out to pee, but still it took that long. We played cat-and-mouse with the 18 wheelers all the way. We finally arrived at the Las Vegas Thousand Trails RV park just before 4pm. It was quite warm...

Sep 11, 2019 - And We're Off!

And away we go! We've actually been planning this trip off and on for about the last 3 years, but something always came up and we kept postponing it. But it was finally here and nothing was going to stop us this time, including the incredibly painful stiff neck I had been suffering with over the last few days! Thankfully, Susan is an incredible navigator and was able to watch traffic on the right side because I couldn't turn my neck that far. We got a fairly early start (9:01a.m.) and had the car hooked up and ready to hit the road by 9:40....

Apr 28, 2019 - San Ramon Day One

We started our 2019 Nova Scotia trip around 0630 when Ross rolled out of bed and went to the kitchen to make coffee. By 0845 we were ready to climb in the motorhome but as we were ready to climb in to motorhome our granddaughter called and said she had something for us and she would be at the house in about 15 minutes. As we waited for her to arrive we got the motorhome started and got it ready to move out of the parking spot. Our granddaughter is currently involved with cooking school where she learning how to make all types of desserts....

Apr 1, 2019 - Heading for home....

It was warm this morning in Yuma, So shorts and tank tops are the apparel for the day. It is supposed to be 85 today. It is kind of hazy out..not bright sunshine, but that makes for a cooler travel day. No wind is forecasted either, so that's good also. We got underway at 0900 and headed down Foothills blvd. to the freeway. And as we merged onto 8E it promptly went down to one lane. Road construction! Poop! We should have taken the North Frontage road instead. That slowdown cost us at least 20 minutes and they were spraying some kind of oil...

Jan 21, 2019 - Bakersfield, CA - Orange Grove RV Park

We continue down I-5 to Sacramento where we take CA Hwy 99 south to Orange Grove RV Park, Bakersfield, CA. The draw of this campground has always been camping sites nestled among the orange trees and the park encourages you to pick the oranges. This year they wanted us to take all we could as the oranges were very small and were not able to be processed to sell. Bakersfield received its name from Thomas Baker, a lawyer and former colonel in the militia of Ohio, his home state. The gold rush brought Baker to the area. He moved to the banks...

Jan 12, 2019 - Oranges and Parakeets

Tonight we camped in Bakersfield California at The Orange Grove RV Park. Oranges right outside our doorway, literally. Ripe for the picking too. So sweet! We ran into town today. I needed to stop at a quilt shop (to see if I needed anything), and we went to Beale Park to see the Rosy-ringed parakeets that live there. It is always so weird to see Parrots and Parakeets living in the wild. We loaded up with paper plates so we don’t have to wash dishes for the next couple of weeks (boon docking in the desert, saving water). We made a quick...

Kidds-OnTheRoad 2019

Jan 12, 2019 - Nashville West

Greetings from Bakersfield, California or as some call it there because of its strong ties to country music, Nashville West. Bakersfield is a significant hub for both agriculture and oil production. We left Pismo Beach after 6 wonderful days visiting friends and decided to take a more scenic route along Highway 46. We stopped at our favorite winery, Tobin James, in Paso Robles where we sampled and purchased some of their amazing red wines and picked up new campfire blankets (those of you who have enjoyed a campfire with us were always...

Nov 23, 2018 - To Bakersfield

This morning we enjoyed a nice complimentary breakfast at the Best Western in Palm Springs. Lisa and Bob drove us to pick up our car at Enterprise Rental. They were very nice to deal with and upgraded us to a Toyota Camry. Our 4 hr drive to Bakersfield was uneventful other than a few backups on the major interstates. We picked a route that would take us north a bit and avoid LA as best we could. Our goal is to avoid any rush hour traffic so we plan to head out by 10:00am and be off the road by 3:00pm. We are now resting in our room and I...

Our 5 week adventure

Nov 9, 2018 - Sacramento to Bakersfield.

Another relaxing drive to Bakersfield, CA. Once we passed thru the busy highway traffic of Sacramento, it was a very slow relaxing drive into the River Run RV Park. We had a very quiet evening, long walk thru the park ending with another great Grammie Jo meal. We must say the Rest Areas of the U.S. are very well situated (easy in easy off the highways) and they've made them very inviting for holidayers. Had an early evening, quiet dinner and rested for our trip to 29 Palms tomorrow morning...thru the High Desert area of the Mojave Desert....
