Feb 5, 2014 - Kitt Peak National Observatory

One of the tourist items on our check list remaining from last year was a visit to the national observatory at Kitt Peak. Most European countries have had national observatories since the 1700's; we didn't get around to building this one until after World War II. This location on Tohono O'Odham Indian and was the second most sacred mountain in their territory. This tribe has lived here forever, rather than being moved here to be on a reservation and they had learned their lesson to be suspicious of the white man from their brethren....

Feb 25, 2012 - Kitt Peak and National Observatory

2/23 Kitt Peak Today we drove about 45 miles west of Tucson and up to Kitt Peak to see the National Observatory. The 12 mile drive up the access road to Kitt Peak is, yet again, another great drive with fantastic views. More sensory overload!! Kitt Peak is at 6,875 feet and is the home of the National Observatory with it’s 4 meter telescope, the National Solar Observatory, the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope (the largest solar telescope in the World) and some 20 plus other telescopes/observatories.
