Feb 4, 2008 - Day 2: More wind and snow!
9am: The wind is still blowing and Marilyn is trying very hard to not join the "blowing." Thanks to Nyquil and Zicam, she's kept her cold at a dull roar. The drive west from Deming is over very flat terrain covered with grass and Soaptree Yucca plants with "sky islands" jutting out of the Chihuahuan desert. The most common birds in the area are ravens. 5pm: As we drove west, the weather got worse until we were in rain which became snow by the time we were in Benson, AZ. Jan 5, 2008 - Fairbank Ghost Town
Took a trip today to Fairbank, AZ which is a close by "Ghost town". Town was originally started in 1881 at the junction of a railroad split. Silver mines here and in surrounding area, including Tombstone a few miles away, brought material here for milling. Town eventually grew to 15,000. As the mines were mined out and as has happened in other areas of the country, the railroad quit running, Fairbank eventually "died". Last residents closed up in 1970.
