Jun 4, 2018 - Day 11

We left Pontardawe this morning around 9.30am and had a wonderful day trip as Maureen & Jules showed us the incredible South Wales countryside. The sun was out, a balmy 22 degrees and a lovely day for a drive in the country (especially when we’re being chauffeured). We ventured over Black Mountain, Llangadog, Llandovery, Ceredigion, Pontarfynach, The Elan Valley & lots of other lovely villages whose names are too hard to spell and harder to pronounce. Can I just recommend Isaksen/White Tours when anyone is in Pontardawe - very...

The PJs On Tour

Jun 3, 2018 - Day 10 - Wales

We had a beautiful drive over to Wales today. Skipped the freeways and took the country route - beautiful. We arrived at Maureen & Jules’ at Pontardawe around 3.30 and our wonderful hosts bundled us into the car and took us for a little tour to Rhossili on the Gower Peninsula. Maureen had packed a picnic dinner (complete with Pinot Grigio) so we sat on the cliff top and watched the world go by. We then drove back through The Mumbles (where Catherine Zeta-Jones is from), stopped at The Pilot of Mumbles to try the local ale, then headed...

The PJs On Tour

May 20, 2016 - South Wales

Have enjoyed our Welsh time. Has been cold and at times wet. I am doing all the driving as we didnt put Al down to drive! Some very strange road conditions and lots of skinny lanes, met a big tractor on a very tight spot today, have not had a heart attack yet! We go back to London tomorrow,  and are having a day with a young couple we befriended on our Intrepid Chinese trip. They are now married with 2 young kids. On Sunday they will pick us up and take us to Windsor castle for a day out. Looking forward to seeing them after 8 years. On...

Jul 28, 2012 - Swansea

What a beautiful day in the Mumbles! I spent two hours walking on the beach this morning. Beautiful rocks, shells, a nice walkway in addition to the beach area. The tide was low when I started, but most of the beach disappeared before I was decided I better turn around and head back. By noon, Lisa was ready to go to the City Center for lunch and to look at the market place. Chuck and Deena joined us and we looked at a few shops, watched some of the Olympic events on the Big Screen installed at the heart of the Center, and picked up...

Europe 2012

Jul 26, 2012 - Wales

Left Ireland today...we took a ferry from Dublin to Wales and then had a long bus ride to Swansea. The students got settled in at the university and the rest of us are staying at a B&B called the Norton Inn. We're all tired but this is the final leg of the journey so we're happy not to have to pack up every day or two. The bus ride was one of the most scenic I've ever experienced. Beautiful green countryside, sheep dotting the landscape, flowers in abundance, and riverbanks or ocean view around every corner. Can't wait to explore it tomorrow.

Europe 2012

Apr 15, 2012 - Wales - Swansea & Surrounds

9th April 2012 What a miserable day! The skies opened up early in the morning and the rain continued all day. We had planned to visit the Beacon Breacons National Park and a bit of rain was not going to stop us. We were well prepared with thermals, thick jackets, hats, scarfs and umbrellas. There were three different caves at the National Park, Dan-yr-Ogof (National Show Cave), Cathedral Cave and Bone Cave each offering a unique underground experience. In Dan-yr-Ogof show cave we walked through the beautifully decorated passageways for...

Jul 1, 2011 - Wales and England

We picked up our car around midday and started our journey to the Gower peninsula in Wales. The staff at the hire company were shocked that we planned to drive to Wales - 4 hours driving in one day! We got to Swansea around 4pm and started looking for a camp ground. We found an amazing sight - on a cliff overlooking the most beautiful deserted beach. After setting up we went out for a drive to find some dinner before having an early night in our not so well insulated Tesco tent. We decided to stay in Wales for an extra night so we spent the...

Aug 13, 2009 - Museum of Welsh Life, Cardiff

We had a nice weather day, an unusual occurrence in Wales apparently, so decided to head to an outside Welsh history museum near Cardiff. The museum has been collecting old housing and structures from Celtic period (BC) to current. Buildings were donated and then taken apart piece by piece, labeled and re-assembled in the museum. Each building had a documented history of people that lived their and information about the region. I believe the girls enjoyed the general store and the fudge and lemon drops the most! Go figure. We returned home...

Margerm Europe 2009

Aug 12, 2009 - Exploring the beaches of the Atlantic

We woke up to a misty day if one is cup half full (which the writer is!) or a bit on the gloomy side. But we were ready for our first day of beachcombing. Ready for breakfast Alyssa said can we have a hot breakfast, you know the kind with eggs and bacon. Chaelle piped in with Oh, Yeahh! We hadn't realized everyone was ready for a Canadian breakfast after 40 days of the local fare. Luckily, Danielle was on it. Her and Dave whipped down to the butcher (across the street) gotta love European shopping, and we had our first scrambled eggs and...

Aug 11, 2009 - Heading to Walish Country

We woke up early (well for us holidayers it was early) to say goodbye to Judith and Corinne as they headed out the door for work. Our suitcases were packed so we just had to grab a bite and stuff in a few last minute items. Dave always likes to be there extra early so we ran out the door to wait for 20 minutes for the bus! (Don't worry everyone we were at the front of the line!) Nicole came with us to help us navigate our way through the Swiss bus and train system to get to the airport. Had we gone alone I think we might have broken all the...

Sep 26, 2008 - Ocean

Sunday 21 We wake up still laughing about last night and decide to catch a bus to the city Swansea that is by the beach. We head over to the bus stop and one of the guys that works at the hotel stops and offers us a ride. So we hop in and he drives us the 20 minutes to Neath. He obviously was not a genius. So we take the train from Neath to Swansea. When we get there we are trying to head to Mumbles or Gower which are both " Sites of Extreme Beauty" I guess they are nice to look at. But we think it will take to long so we just walk over to...

Sep 30, 2005 - Off to Wales

We're on our way to Wales. The weather started nice, in fact we've had pretty good weather all round since being here. Before heading off though we took a side trip to see the Uffingtaon Horse and Dragon hill. Took a bit of navigating but we tracked it down Ok in the end. Then off to Wales via the M4. We stopped first at Tintern Abbey in the Wye Valley. This is a most beautiful part of the country and we found it a wonderful place to drive through. Tintern is a magnificant old ruin and we spend quite while here checking it out. Had a good...
