May 29, 2018 - Day 5 - Cardiff

This morning we caught the country train to Cardiff, Wales. A 2 1/2 hour journey with the scenery a mix of railway yards and pretty countryside. We have loved the very small piece of Cardiff we have seen so far. The city centre/shopping precinct consists of malls and tiny little windy alley ways - a mix of old and new. It felt very Harry Potter with amazing little treasure shops, antique book shops and great little cocktail/gin bars. At the end of the shopping precinct is Cardiff Castle.... right smack in the centre of town. So, we...

Europe Holiday 2018

Jul 4, 2017 - Cardiff Castle

Up at 6:00 and put the suitcase outside the door, then get dressed and head down for breakfast. Alice wasn’t feeling well but we ate a little then onto the bus. Quiet ride to Cardiff through drizzle and rain, but light stuff. We got to the castle and hurried inside to hide under a big tree. We were group two so we stood about for a bit and the rain ended. Then off for the castle tour. Cardiff Castle was an ancient structure but completely redone by John Stuart, a coal merchant, in the mid 19th century. A Victorian Gothic fantasy built on...

Jun 9, 2016 - Cardiff, Wales

Wales was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century AD. It converted to Christianity in the 6th century and became part of Britain in 1535. Wales prospered in the 19th century due to the discovery of coal that resulted in an industrial boom. However, it did not last, causing severe economic hardship. Now Wales is on the rise with high-tech industries and the growth of tourism. Wales has a bilingual policy in spite of the fact that only one-fifth of the population speaks Welsh. All road signs are in both languages. Cardiff is the capital...

Jun 2, 2016 - Day 11 Kington Langley to Cardiff via Bath

Time to leave beautiful Brook Cottage. It was lovely to have a very well equipped cottage that gave us the chance to wash and dry our clothes (even if the drier sounded like a Mack truck) and I even cooked some scrambled eggs this morning after my run. It's still overcast and a little cool however the rain seems to have passed us by. We left for Bath about 8:45 and arrived about 9:30 after following a slightly odd route. Parked in the Bath Cricket Club parking lot where heaps of kids were out playing cricket. It cost us £6.60 for 6...

May 21, 2016 - Cardiff, Wales

All the way into Cardiff, I kept looking for the Welcome to Wales sign. Dad told me they probably wouldn't have one--we'd just pass from England to Wales with no fanfare. Fortunately, Wales did not disappoint me. While the sign could have been bigger and more impressive, it did sport a red dragon, the symbol of Wales since at least Henry VII. Mom woke up sick, so I was suspecting to have to go straight to Heathrow and miss Wales altogether. But she rallied. We drove to the Cardiff city center. The huge Cardiff Castle is right in the heart...

Mar 31, 2015 - Rovers Big Day out

We have a new edition to the Skinner Shaw Clan - introducing Rover Shaw. Our first adventure we headed to Cardiff Wales. Rover was amazing maybe a little slow but very comfortable for everyone. Tomo was so excited to be going to Millennium Stadium and talking about Rugby - we got to see where the Queen sat when she came to the game (apparently she fell asleep). We got to see the changing rooms and Gee and Ollie were pleased to see the Soccer changing rooms as well. So everyone was happy especially after we sampled a Cornish pastry -...

Sep 16, 2014 - Back to Wales

Again yesterday internet was not good at the hotel. Visited Blarney Castle. I attempted to go up the stairs but ended up being the "bag lady" for others going up. I held their bags because the stairs were too narrow for them and their knapsacks! Jim went up and took pictures. Walked around the lovely grounds. Beautiful palm trees and succulents in the gardens. Hard to believe we weren't in the tropics. Again beautiful warm sunny day. Off to the Waterford Crystal plant for a tour. They only make specialty pieces now example the People's...

Aug 8, 2014 - While I was in Czech

Here are a few photos of my time in the Czech republic. I stayed with Jana O'Briens parents, Pr Olda and Eva and they were just FANTASTIC to me. I got to know her sister Pavla and Thomasz her brother plus other saints all the kids. It was such a nice time. When I gave the word on Sunday communion, the equipment for translation failed so one of the sisters had to sit next to me with a mike, and translate for me. She did a fantastic job .... what a team. Lots a precious memories. Flying to Bath in England at 6.30am tomorrow morning with the...
