Apr 16, 2013 - Chatsworth

Usually I try not to go back to places I’ve already seen but Chatsworth, home to the Dukes of Devonshire, was an exception. I felt I didn’t see it properly in 2011 & actually stayed in this area at Bolsover last year, intending to go there but I found too many other places to see & ran out of time. So today was the day but as Chatsworth doesn’t open until 11:00, I had time to go to the local Nicholson Museum in Leek beforehand. I was intrigued because the museum brochure said they had a wallaby which was found dead locally in 1994 & I...

Apr 15, 2013 - Saxons & Silk

I watched another episode of ‘Endeavour’ last night & hope we get the series at home. Endeavour is the young Morse, at the very start of his career as a detective & I think it’s very well done. It’s on ITV so during the ads I crossed to the Masters Golf which was on the next channel, BBC2. When Endeavour finished, I got involved with the golf & stayed with it until 12:30am our time, when Adam Scott finally won the play-off. I still woke up reasonably early & was out of here by 9:30. My first objective was back in Stoke-on-Trent to see the...

Apr 14, 2013 - Staffordshire

Yesterday as we were having our glass of wine after the show, Jean handed me a brochure about the place we were in, the Old Hall Hotel. I didn’t look at in until this morning & found out, to my amazement that the oldest part of the current building was once part of a four-storey fortified tower, built in 1573 by Bess of Hardwick and her 4th husband, George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. The tower was used at times between 1576 and 1578 to house Mary Queen of Scots when she was in the custody of the Earl on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I....

Apr 13, 2013 - Buxton

Today I spent a lovely day with a friend I met in Mildura just a few weeks ago. Jean lives just south of Manchester & when she heard I was coming to this area, she was very keen to meet up with me. I’d already bought a ticket to a performance of ‘Jane Eyre’ at the Buxton Opera House for this afternoon & as that was about halfway between where I’m staying at Leek & where Jean lives at Marple, she managed to get the seat next to mine so we could enjoy the play together. Buxton isn’t a very large town but it’s an old spa town, actually going...

Apr 12, 2013 - Leek

This is a lovely old market town – it was granted its Market Charter in 1207, in the reign of King John so it’s seriously old. The indoor Butter Market was open today; it wasn’t very large & had all the usual types of stalls, mostly food but the larger outdoor market is on tomorrow. Apparently Leek was a major centre for the silk industry but there doesn’t seem to be much here. There’s a Silk Museum just down the road in Macclesfield which I’ll try to get to if I can fit it in. There’s so many different places to see – silk, pottery,...

Apr 11, 2013 - Stoke-on-Trent

So much for my day off. I did a load of laundry & really don’t like these combination washer/dryers. They take forever & everything still comes out quite damp so it’s all draped over the wall heaters as usual. While I was driving up the motorway yesterday I realized that I hadn’t organised the paperwork with the car rental company to allow me to take the car to Ireland. We hadn’t done anything about this in 2011 but it was a case of ignorance is bliss & we should have & were fortunately waived straight through when we landed at Rosslaire....

Apr 10, 2013 - London to Leek via Warwick

It’s been a long day & I’m very tired tonight so this might be a bit scrappy. The car picked me up a bit before 8:00am & it took less than an hour to get to Heathrow, not the 2 hours the owner told me. I had a bit of a wait, then got a 2-door diesel Kia Cee’d which I’d never heard of. I wasn’t that impressed with a 2-door but they were doing me a favour by giving me a diesel, which usually costs more, so I couldn’t really complain. Plus, for some reason, they brought the car to the door for me when everyone else had to walk into the lot...
